If you really like it, it's actually quite inexpensive. I think it was only a few bucks for a 500g bag but that was a few years ago.

This is why companies stop giving free stuff away, some people get greedy! I was contemplating giving away 50g nut samples but comments like this stopped me. I knew id get hammered by repeat offenders with possibly no intent to purchase anymore :(

there's always people abusing all systems.
In australia we dont have many "free give away" as it's less effective due to our smaller popluation.

(Black) tea has approx 40 and 100 mg caffeine per serving.
That's like saying…I drink Coke because I need a break from coffee. :-)

  • You guys not scared regarding the cancer risk with mate? I know it probably takes a lot to make any considerable difference.

    • Any links you care to share? never heard you could end up with the big C by drinking this stuff.

I was just reading the wikipedia article and they say there's a significant risk if you drink over 1 litre a day (which is silly I know but you can never be too careful these days)

        Cancer

Mate consumption is associated with oral cancer[13] esophagus cancer, cancer of the larynx,[14] and squamous cell of the head and neck.[15][16] The mechanism is believed to be due to the effect of temperature and the evidence to support this association is strong.[14]

A study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer showed a limited correlation between oral cancer and the drinking of large quantities of hot mate.[clarification needed] Smaller quantities (less than 1 liter daily) and warm rather than hot mate consumption were found to increase risk only slightly; alcohol and tobacco consumption had a synergistic effect on increasing oral, throat, and esophageal cancer. The increased risk, rather than stemming from the mate itself, could be credited to the high temperatures in which the mate is consumed in its most traditional way, the chimarrão. The cellular damage caused by thermal stress could lead the esophagus and gastric epithelium to be metaplasic, adapting to the chronic injury. Then, mutations would lead to cellular dysplasia and to cancer.[17] Given the influence of the temperature of water, as well as the lack of complete adjustment for age, alcohol consumption and smoking, the study concludes that mate is "not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans".[18]

        • No, that sentence reads:

Smaller quantities (less than 1 liter daily) and warm rather than hot mate consumption were found to increase risk only slightly.

I wonder if that increase should be decrease. In any case it seems hot rather than the amount is the key risk.

Everything causes cancer these days. Like with anything else, drink with moderation. Even drinking too much water can kill you.

Follow the wiki link in my comment above. TLDR: slight correlation if drinking hot yerba mate tea. My take: almost everything gives you cancer, only the risk varies.

        • quote: "The mechanism is believed to be due to the effect of temperature and the evidence to support this association is strong."
          Cold tea anyone? ;)

I agree that everything should be in moderation

"Widely used by the indigenous Guarani people for hundreds of years as an invigorating beverage, today Mate is consumed by hundreds of people worldwide, on a daily basis, to ensure health and vitality."

Given the number of people on the planet, claiming that "hundreds" consume it on a daily basis as a marketing term is hardly awe inspiring.

  • Thanks. I missed seeing this when it was posted.
