Long time lurker. First time posting (gentle or not, go ahead). Thought it's a real bargain so decided to inform all ozbargaineers (timelords or not). Also think it can be had for less with Cashrewards, but can never confirm the category that it is in.

  • Beauty. So damn tempted.

Solid price, if only i could get this sort of pricing on the spb143J

    • That'd just be great ! I am waiting as well.

  • I’d be surprised if they had more than one in stock but worth the post. They had the SPB147 for $990 and the blue Alpanist for around $650 a week ago and both went very quickly.

Don't know how many in stock - but there's one less now. Thanks OP - this has been lurking on my wish list for a while. I got 6% off a $1K gift card through a work discount site.

    Have a + , even though the deal's expired…

  • This is a great deal! I'm annoyed with myself that I missed it! (My bank account is grateful though!!)

Can someone please explain why you would blow $1000 on a watch and convince yourself it was a bargain?

    • +2

If you are asking this sort of question then you shouldn't have anyone answer it for you.

I’m genuinely curious. That’s like 2 months of groceries for a useless trinket

        • +3

It's hard to explain. It's a nice accessory for a lot, some are interested in how the whole watch works (the mechanics behind it), the material, the way they look.

Personally I have only 4 watches, a Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 (Blue Dial), a Seiko 5 Sport in Green, a Casio DW5600 in black with a silver steel casing (from AliExpress) and a Casio GA-2100 in Black. Not more than 2k combined and I think that will be more than enough for me for now but I have my eye on a couple of other watches but like you said, priorities.

I can't justify spending more than 1k on a watch in my current financial situation, imagine looking at Jacob and Co watches lol

          • @itsmoe: "more than enough for me for now" is either a lie or "for now" is literally as you were typing and not a second longer. What's your wrist size and is the PRX ok or does it feel weird and big? I want to like it but every time I try it on my 6.9 it feels wonky.

            • @Unotifoso: haha you are right my dude. But I bought all 4 watches in the span of 2 months so kinda broke now which is why I haven't bought any more.

I have a fairly small wrist (probably around the same size as yours) but I like to wear my watches tight, I love the PRX the most and I think it's super comfy and a great looking watch. They announced the 35mm version of the PRX so maybe wait a bit to try them on before committing to anything but I don't think the 35mm will come in the Automatic Mechanical version, only the quartz which I don't like but does work out a lot cheaper.

Same goes for expensive cars, perfumes and phones. Anything is expensive bcos there are people willing to pay to buy that stuff.
From people's perspective, for someone it is hand made craftsmanship that attracts their gaze and for someone it is look-n-feel. So many variables to count for mate.

I own more than 50 watches ranging from cheapo casio in lower 20's to tissots and one tudor (that was a gift). I would have the rolex gmt II, had it been in stock.

I will buy the Royal oak someday. Someday.

          • @Ash SA: I like watches! But only smart watches. As far as I'm concerned, mechanical watches are now redundant, no matter how pretty. Every time I'm tempted to buy a mechanical watch, I remind myself how much more I would enjoy a smart watch.

            • +1

@ForkSnorter: No offences mate. That is what I am saying, every one enjoys things and they should.

I just love mechanical watches, crazily. I change phone yearly (sometimes half-yearly ) all work funded so my craze for phones/tabs/watches is dead.

            • +4

@ForkSnorter: Problem with a smart watch is they become redundant few years after buying it. A mechanical watch can last a lifetime and more being passed down to kids etc.

              • -1

@ozeebee: I guess you're right. A mechanical watch is more environmentally friendly because it lasts longer. Then again, I guess they're not really the same category of product. A mechanical watch basically just tells the time, and if you're lucky it may also include a stop watch function or something. A smart watch is effectively a mini smart phone, with limited smart phone functionality and activity/health tracking. It would be good if some company releases a durable smart watch chassis with a replaceable motherboard and screen.

                • @ForkSnorter: I was a big smart watch guy but the fact that you have to charge them every night for most and every few days for others kinda annoyed me which is why I have now moved back to Casio G-Shock watches for my daily and a couple of mechanical watches for my outings. I still keep an eye on what's out there in the tech world but nothing has grabbed my attention like the Tissot PRX has.

                  • @itsmoe: I don't mind charging it. I'm not going to wear a watch to bed regardless of what kind of watch it is, so I need somewhere to put it when I go to sleep, don't I? The most obvious place to put it is my bedside table. Conveniently, that's right where my charger is. So, I don't see this is a dealbreaker at all.

                    • +1

@ForkSnorter: The only reason I would wear a smart watch is for sleep tracking and for step count (General fitness). And if I can't wear it at night because I have to charge it then it kinda defeats the purpose or at least doesn't serve it's function as it should.

I mean as long as it works for you, that's all that matters dude. Apple watch I'm assuming?

                      • @itsmoe: yep, I'm using the Apple Watch 3. I get 3 days battery life with light use, 2 days with heavy use. Mainly use it for step counter, heart rate, walk/bike ride tracking with GPS, and notifications. I often don't have my phone with me at home, and it's often on silent, so the notifications on my watch have literally been a lifesaver many times. Asking for directions while driving the car has also been useful a few times. Other functions I regularly use are the countdown timer, stop watch, and weather apps.

                        • @ForkSnorter: As long as you're getting your money worth out of the watch, I say we'll done to you. I don't think I'll need all of that myself as my phone is on me 24/7.

Do you drink anything other than tap water? because you are probably ripping yourself off…

    • +4

Honestly mate, the world is almost entirely made up of wants and conveniences. I'm sure you're aware that disposable income varies widely from household to household and the value people place on 'things' as just as variable.

You might as well ask about the length of string…
