Not posting this as a deal but as a discussion.

Swatch are releasing a crossover with Omega to release Speedmaster dial Quartz movement watches. What's everyone's thoughts?

  • I like it. I was surprised at the price - when I started reading I was thinking Swatch looks, Omega price, so end of article was a pleasant surprise.

  • +4

I’m not the target market for this. Also being a bit of a snob this will put me off Omega as I see this diluting their brand. But that’s an opinion of one, it could also be wildly popular.

    • I agree. I've got 2 proper Omegas…not sure why they're doing this. That being said I'll probably purchase a couple.

      • +2

they dont give a shit… nicholas hayek and all the Omega big wigs are promoting this shit on YT

they know they can rake in the cash on this - this shit will be sold out for ages

you can see because they limit to in store only… which means Melb Syd cbd only… Perth SA Briz Tas can all get bent.

also limited 2 per person per day - they're doing artifical scarcity

      • Brand recognition.

Everyone knows what a Rolex is, it's one of the top recognised brands on the planet. Think expensive 'watch', people think Rolex. Omega doesn't share this type of recognised.

The Moonswatch is bringing the Omega brand to a whole new market. People will recognise it now, even if they are not (yet) the target.

Existing Omega customers won't be phased by a Moonswatch. I doubt there are many Omega owners who will be out off Omega due to this, not enough it to outweigh the benefits the brand recognition will bring.

        • Don't agree…I for one won't be buying another Omega because of this, same for several mates of mine who I've spoken to about it and just have a look at the comments on the ads from Omega's social media channels from those who were owners/followers of Omega before this came out…the sentiment is quite negative.

Why did they have to actually make it look so similar to a Speedmaster with the Omega branding so prominent? It's like a cheap knockoff…I believe it's done a lot of reputational damage.

Rolex would never have even thought of doing such nonsense, they must be laughing as the gap between the two brands grows even further apart.

          • @ChiTown: I don't think they shares enough similarities to be a cheap version of the Speedmaster Professional. From what I've seen, it's quite easy to tell its not a 'Pro'

    • People at the front of the line at the stores would have been posting listings on eBay before they even bought the watch. Wonder what scalped prices people will pay for it

  • +2

I like the look and price but watch them get sold out in store and price jacked online.

  • +3

    Does it devalue Omega? Probably.
Could I scratch my speedy itch without the pricetag? I'm thinking it will.

    • +1

I think you fit the exact target market they want to capture :)

      • +1

        I guess so.

Aside though, I actually have a savings account for a speedy and well known to my wife it should be a 40th gift, it is my Grail watch.

  • +1

Fark, these are going to sell like hot cakes, maybe not the red and white one but jesus.
30m water resistance is a bit of a let down.

Pity if you're not in Sydney or Melbourne you'll have zero chance of getting one.

  • +1

$380 in Australia, available from Chadstone in Melbourne or their Pitt St store in Sydney - https://www.swatch.com/en-au/bioceramic-moonswatch.html

Available this Saturday. I expect them to be on eBay for $800 by Monday.

I like it, but not enough to drag myself to Chadstone on a Saturday morning. I'll probably regret not picking one up though. Really want Uranus (in all seriousness, the Mercury one looks great and the Pluto one looks a nice colouring. I love the rings on the Jupiter one too).

    • +1

This is not a limited run collection, so no need to stress about it. Everyone will get their chance to grab one soon enough.

  • +3

Quite like the moon & mercury ones actually.

Can't stand that tacky fabric band but assuming easy to replace with a metal one.

$380 is a bargain, definitely getting scalped.

    https://www.swatch.com/en-au/mission-to-the-moon-so33m100/SO…

Edit: Ah, looks like "bioceramic" is basically plastic so that would explain it.

    • Yeah

What is BIOCERAMIC? Take 1/3 bio-sourced plastic. Mix in 2/3 ceramic! BIOCERAMIC offers you is a lot more resistance and at the same time a silky soft touch. These watches feel every bit as good as they look.

Maybe not the premium feel that would be expected for an Omega

      Still want one.

      • +2

they are saying the 1/3 bio source is from castor oil

i wonder how they are mixing ceramic with plastic? super high temp?

but anyway, this is a cash grab.

At $380 its super profit margin for a plastic watch with a $5 ancient eta quartz movement from 1995… also watch the plastic lens and the velcro strap… there's a coupla bucks of material there they're selling for $380!

        • Can't see Rolex doing something similar anytime soon

But totally agree, i'm amazed Omega would put their name in such big letters to this. I would've thought they would've done the inverse, Swatch in big lettering and Omega in the background.

But then again Swatch pretty much owns everything now doesn't it. Bit like the Volkswagen of the car world.

Would probably feel like a toy in person

          • @Drakesy: I love my swatch chronos… I really do but they aint $380.

These are supposed to be really light and a tad thick but I would have to feel bio ceramic to see.

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Swatch_Group

I think Omega have squeezed blood out of a stone out of the Speedmaster name so at this point I think its just Swatch group 'expanding new markets'. I mean even I love the Omega Speedy shit stuff on this watch.

            • @tonyjzx: Completely with you there.

The fanboiz me included will froth this even though it is a $15 Piece of Plastic/ceramic.

              I wonder if it's a limited edition.

              • +1

@Drakesy: not limited edition but the tactics is they will limit supply by making them in store only…

also have a look at this:

                https://i.redd.it/vyinsbqf0ap81.jpg

this is a real world non studio pic and its really taken my enthusiam down low

the plastic doesnt look good and the lens is std, swatch stuff

                • +1

@tonyjzx: Yeah looks like a toy.

Damn, Omega really cooked this one i feel.

                • @tonyjzx: Mmm they don't look great in that pic..

                  • @nubzy: but its says Omega on the dial

i'd be willing to take a punt at $200

but $380??? i suspect they might not sell as well is Swatch think… who am i kidding.. they'll sell out because its $380 Omega…. well "Omega"* (asterisk)

                • @tonyjzx: Not limitation but given COVID supply the Aust allocation will probably sell out and give rise for scalpers on stockX at last for the short term.

  • +1

Very tempting.. think I like the Neptune model most but might pick up a classic Moon first.

  • Personally I think they look tacky, like uber-cheap knockoff tacky (especially the bright colour versions, but even the more sedate colours), and I'm talking about the body, not the velcro band, cause I acknowledge that can at least be replaced!

  • My first thought was dislike, dilutes the brand but after seeing the official release I liked it.

It feels like an opportunity to own the other dials (Alaska project -> Mars, Rising Sun -> Pluto) which would have been quite out of reach.

And it's still an "official" homage.

    Is it a Speedmaster?🤔 Unsure.

  • -2

Brilliant fun watch, but not for me - diving watch obsession….

Guessing male gay couples will head for blue as gifts….

    • +2

yeah i think anyone who buys a blue dial watch especially divers watch is super mega gay… i would also extend this to blue cars

      pink though… that's a MAN'S colour

      • You mean man-salmon….

The different watch colours are for different planets, eg Red for Mars. The blue watch for the planet Uranus…..

  • Interesting concept. Looks decent for my 0.02c aside from strap. Hopefully it comes off easy as can see a swap to a nato tidying the look up.
Definitely wonder what irl looks like..
Also as others have mentioned how many scalper reseller Muppets will be scooping them up vs ppl that will actually want to wear them. Stock levels will be curious also so hope store is not a sh1t show 2mrw

  • +3

No limited, not numbered, available online at a later date according to Swatch on Insta
    https://www.instagram.com/p/CbfOxAevjJU/

    • Supposedly it's available online from the 28th.

    • Cool thanks 😊

    • Sooo people lining up since last night in Sydney for these. All around Westfield! Glad I read up in here and decided to not to go in today and waste my time. Thanks 👍

  • +1

Folks, Swatch Group is the parent company of Omega. So of course they will do something like this to sell more product. As for Omega being devalued, I can't see this changing anything for the brand. This just capitalises on the Omega name's reputation.

I remember when Swatch first came out. We didn't think much of them but look at how the company has grown now. We were very wrong.

  • OK, I've read it now. This watch has a battery cover only. This means that batteries can be changed but otherwise non-repairable. It's largely a Swatch with a cheap ETA disposable movement. It just shares some looks and dimensions of the Omega Seamaster but certainly not the quality.

Thus, a gimic only for those willing to waste $260 on something different

  • If anyone is going to the Chadstone store tomorrow please post how long the line is there so I can decide whether to pay them a visit or not.
I will do the same if I end up going

    • They'll be available online at a later. As above, not limited nor numbered so don't bother yourself too much.

Also, they look significantly less premium or interesting than the site photos, especially the plastic look so you may not like them too much.

      • Yeah the marketing photos make them look quite attractive, but having seen a few photos of the displays they look pretty average

      • Yeah that's why I want to go in store to hopefully try them on.
I don't mind buying online. But would like to see one in person first

    • I might drag my ass down there at 9am to have a look. If the queue is nuts, i wouldn't bother.

      • Queue is quite literally thousands of people long at Chadstone

    • +2

i got there at 6am, waited till 9am open. Police and security told us watches were sold out. We didn't want to believe it unless it was coming from a swatch employee/manager. Eventually at 10:45am the boutique manager came out and advised only 30 watches left. Should try again next week (unsure on date) or in two weeks time online :(

From what I was told, only 150 watches were available and there was at least 1,000 people in line from 7am onwards and easily over 1,500 by 9am. absolutely insane.

  • btw. you can buy two a day

but the cant be the same ones

also its been confirmed these will be continously made, non limited editions

i personally think $250usd $380aud is a pretty high price to pay for a plastic watch with a plastic lens + a movement from 1995 same as what I have in a swatch chrono that costs $50

but the market has spoken and people will be lining up for these… you can bet all the influencers will be wearing these so they'll be 110% sought after by everyone who's trendy

i cant bear $200-$250 aud for these as a friggin' fun ass novelty but $380… yeesh

  • +1

F$ck scalpers sooo much. I went to CBD at 8.30am store opens at 10am queue went round the entire city block… And I don't want to be judgemental but the first 1000 people all looked like scalpers.

As soon as this goes to online store, it just be bots buying them.

I've actually worked out that for me it makes more sense to buy the full Monty omega.

    • They started lining up from around 5 yesterday afternoon, the people at the head of the queue

      • I was there at 1pm and tried them all on… So yeah not surprised.

    • What do scalpers look like?

  • Confirmed swatch Sydney had 140 units .. lmao

    • Lol this is a joke… So 70 people got to buy them? Guess it's worth it for the free publicity in the news tonight

      • They reduced it to one per customer. Swatch Insta says this is the limit temporarily.

        • Yeah but I'd say there were 200 people that wanted them and 2500 scalpers… Jokes on them when they realise they won't get the mark up… It's like Yeezy stupid 200% mark up and the price has tanked.

          • @lucky.ozbargain: yeah this has to be a giant marketing scam by Swatch group

they would have known people would be lined up and they limited supply and for what? internet clout

            imagine the poor sales staff

the authorities should shit on them worldwide for this nonsense

  • I arrived at 5:30 at Chadstone to get one for myself (to go alongside my Moonwatch) I honestly thought surely they will have at least 500 watches and I'll get one.

Met a few nice people in the line and chatted to pass the time. Rolls around to 9am and boom…police and centre staff said they were all sold out and to go home. Very poorly handled by Swatch. We also calculated we were about 200ish in line, and we got there at 530!

    • You should have started lining up at 5:30 p.m. the day before

  • I see some ridiculous listed prices by resellers. Does anyone know what people are WILLING to pay on the resale market?

Can't wait until they release more of these so the resellers are stuck with them.

    • stockX sales history is a good indicator of what's actually changed hands on the secondary market. If you sign up a free account you can view sales histories.

It has indeed been climbing from $800aud yesterday to ~$1.8k this morning, and there's a lot of transactions (around 5 an hr)

I certainly don't believe it's worth that, but the market says otherwise. Waiting for a few weeks for the supply to catch up and fomo to die down

    • +2

Don't forget scalpers are a business they can easily sell to each other to make it look like there is sales volume. Schills and scalpers…

  • So these will get restocked in a few weeks? Few months?

These look great for me who don’t really care about watches a whole look but get a decent looking watch

    • This really depends if you want a fashion watch or not… Are you the kind of person that buys Calvin Klein jocks at $90 /pack of 3. When you can get better unbranded at like 1/3 the price?

There a significant number of really good mechanical seiko autos and G-Shock digitals at this price point that are way better value for money for what you get.

Or just wait for hype to die down in two years and the bottom drop out like yeezy 350 v2's

  • These 'dumb' watches seem super expensive, for what they do, and cant do in 2022. They're a swatch, maybe sub A$100 would be the right price.
In the video, the second hand does not align with the increments marked on the face, why not?

    • +1

because its impossible due to the slack nature of the quartz mech

even if you do align it by eye it'll move out of alignment soon anyway

auto mechs do it less but even they do it

its a question of the printed dial vs. the mechanicals in the watch

  • Any updates when these will be available online to buy?

  • The promo looked good but holding it it's just a cheap looking plastic, you rather getting a proper watch for the money. Even as a fashion statement might be ok with RRP but definitely not at these scalper prices. Wishing Omega will incorporate the colourways.

  • Looks like Swatch in Sydney closed down for some reason.

    • I think they moved to QVB; just walked past it

  • I think it was just marketing distraction from the escalating war.
