Lol I thought it was the price just for the stand.

    • +2

With apple that would not have been surprising. Remember the cheese grater?

    • Lol I thought it was the price just for the stand.

      It's an Apple stand…

I wonder how much the matching monitor costs?

      • I almost thought, considering the monitor was included, that OP was quite cheap. And I bought my laptop/phone 2nd hand …

    $100 cheaper doesn’t help.

  • +7

Geebus - would u be better off getting an 5k OLED 55” monitor for the same price 😳

    • +4

But theres no apple logo on it. 😂

    • Agreed, but I think you mean 4K (Aka LG C2)

      • Oh yeah typo - meant 4k and yeah one of those Sonys!

        • There is difference between 5K and 4K though, the designers who would be using it can notice it.

    • I hate Crapple as much as anyone but that's not even a remotely good comparison.

  • This + Apple credit card = coke delivery system

  • Delivery included?

    • Features
      Price includes delivery

      Says so in the website.

Save your money and buy the LG Ultrafine 5k

These 2 reviews sum up this display nicely:

    • Any deals on LG Ultrafine 5k?

    • -5

That will have shit build quality compared to the Apple product

      • +3

According to one of the videos linked above it's the LG display anyway

        • Only one small difference (on paper anyway): 600 nits max (Apple) vs 500 nits max (LG).

Also, the Apple Studio Display is running iOS 15.4 on Apple SoC (A13 Bionic).

        • +2

The LG case and stand are plastic compared with highly machined aluminium, and the Ultrafine is renowned for dodgy ports and rf issues with the display. It took a long time for LG to fix. That would justify the extra price over the LG. Remember a 5K panel at same size has 75% more pixels than 4K which is one of the reasons why these things cost.

I also suspect that the IPS panel in the Apple monitor is LG’s next gen display with wider viewing angles, blacker blacks and much higher contrasts. The extra 100 nits is also helpful. I suspect LG still hasn’t released an Ultrafine with this panel as it still has old inventory to clear out. Same @4K, LG still doesn’t have it in its own displays but Dell has them in 4K ultrasharps.

That said this is a typical version one Apple product. At that price it should have a fully adjustable stand at that price as standard, and it has gone out to reviewers with the camera software still requiring work. Bit of an own goal that one. .

Totally agree with MKBHD (second video). A sh*t deal.

Apple could have implemented Face ID with the processing power the Studio Monitor is packing.

Like almost all 1st gen Apple products, it is full of issues.

Also, it looked like Linus managed to pull out the power cord without causing any damage.

      • +1

looked like Linus managed to pull out the power cord without causing any damage.

He yanked on the cord with so much force. Doubt thats adviceable. Not like you can buy a replacement if say your dog chewed through the power cable.

        • +1

Plus Apple's customer care states the power cord is not removable. Apple really knows how to charge as much as possible to screw customers over

          • +2

@RMBC: And yet you get the fanbois defending this anti consumer behaviour.

            • @xoom: And paying exorbitant amounts for the privilege

    • +2

Ultrafine looks plasticky, has widely reported problems with the USB/Thunderbolt ports coming loose or not working and the stand being flimsy.

Both are far beyond what I'd pay for a monitor, but if I was thinking about the Ultrafine I reckon I'd jump up to the Studio purely for the better build quality and for the fact that if anything goes wrong I can just take it to Apple instead of dealing with LG warranty.

  • Anyone remember the 5k diy monitor that used the imac as a case? That only costed about $800 to build back then lol

  • Unless you really need 5K for production isn’t the new iMac way more cost effective????

    • If you're happy with 24 inches (that's what she said).

    • Can't use the iMac as a display for more powerful products like the MacBook Pro or Mac Studio

      • +1

Just can’t justify the mediocre display at this price point paired with a Mac Studio.

  • I have the apple designed - LG 5k Ultrafine thunderbolt display is it worth the upgrade to the new apple 5k display?

    • +4

100nits more brightness, slightly better (but still average) webcam, better (but still laptop grade) speakers, an A13 processor for (reasons), and a not-supposed-to-be-detached (but can be with silly force) power cable. This is one for the for the diehard Appleheads, not an upgrade for any tangible means. If you're a professional and the 5k Ultrafine isn't cutting it, you don't spent $2.4k on this, you dish out for a Pro Display XDR.

      • +1

Or Asus UCG ProArt display if you want similar performance to XDR but more affordable. Plus it's 4K 120 if you also wanna game.

        • I would look at the fine print on that ASUS doing 120hz. Maybe with an XBox one in certain modes.

  • +1

The fact it hasn't even got HDR or 120hz….. What were they thinking? And I say this as someone who has a fair bit of Apple kit.

Agree with previous comments, just get a nice OLED. I use the LG C1 55" with my M1 MBA and it's a treat.

    • +4

They are thinking they can milk their customers more when they release the one with a removable power cord and one with 120Hz refresh rate and HDR.

      • and call it courage.

        • +1

What's it called when Samsung and Google copy it later?

Or did the Pixel 2, Note 10 and S20 have headphone jacks in your universe?

      • +1

5K 120Hz HDR probably isn't even possible over the connection

      • Well technically this has a removable power cable. Not sure why Apple decided it wasn't removable. Maybe to prevent grey importing?

    • HDR missing is a big deal. Maybe they are saving it for later.

      • 2nd gen with more $$$ (maybe in 2024).

    • I doubt you could find a port that could pump out 5K HDR @120hz.
Maybe 4K, but even then it would have to be HDMI 2.1 which can’t be a power dock.

  • +1

I can’t understand why anyone would buy this.

    • -1

to show people you are rich?

      • +5

I show people my full tank of gas to flex my $$$

        • I was talking about rich people not super wealthy people like you.

  • -1

    Thanks. Bought 20.

  • +1

This is objectively a bad display for the price. Get the Alienware QD-OLED or save $2000 and get a capable Dell Gaming monitior

    • Do you think this is meant to be comparable to gaming monitors?

    • This isn’t a gaming monitor. Gaming monitors would not be suitable for the purposes this studio monitor would be used for.

That said I am struggling to see the value. The long in the tooth LG Ultrafine is its only 5K competitor and the build quality would probably justify the extra money. But that is about it. Only if you really, really want 5K. Bear in mind this is pretty much the same price as the old 27 inch iMac (also 5K).

for colour/media work, I would give up the thunderbolt speeds, camera and speakers and the 5K and get two Dell ultrasharp monitors with a 90W USBc dock and still have change (500nits, 4K @60hz). It can even rotate to perpendicular and the stand is fully adjustable. And like the Ultrafine it has an LG display, although with updated IPS technology that boosts brightness, viewing angle and most importantly, contrast. I suspect Apple is using a 5K version of this particular panel as well, but I wonder why LG hasn’t produced one for itself yet? Clearing out Ultrafine inventory?

      • Correction, the Dells are 400 nits.

  • I'd rather spend $399 on a Dell monitor and the other 2k on a PC

  • apple monitor is actually cheap if you know its value.

    • +1

How do you figure that? You are paying way more and yet getting less.

      No hdr for starters.
