Gee, I can remember the days when fridges didn't need surge protection, the only "electronics" in them was a thermostat and a compressor, neither of which were bothered by surges. Oh, and a door switch and a light bulb.

This is a good price for a surge protector with insurance. Ones this cheap usually don't come with insurance.

I'd be interested to know if anyone on OzB has ever tried to claim on a surge protector's insurance, and how they went with the claim.

Gee, I remember the days when people didn't whinge about the good old days.

Things change, otherwise you'd be typing that response via typewriter and riding your horse to the post office for every comment reply you want to send. I like that I don't need to defrost my "electronic" fridge.

There were plenty of "frost free" fridges before electronics were put into fridges. They used a mechanical timer, which cycled about once a month, doing the same thing as the newer electronic timers.

        • Simpler doesn't equal Better

Yes, there used to be steam locomotives to get from town to town in your day….I think I prefer the comfort of my Nissan :)

          Simpler doesn't equal Better

Nor does newer, it's all a matter of perspective! Having lived through both paces of life, I can assure you that there's pros & cons for each! ;)

I agree with StewBalls. The only reason that fridges have gone electronic is because it makes them a tiny bit cheaper to manufacture. Quality, however, has gone down the drain. So many things are now designed to last until just after the warranty expires. Would you like to buy a new fridge every five years, or have one fridge that lasts 20+ years?

+1 for lifetime warranty. I've had 1 of these and 3 times in the last 5 years it has "surged out". Took it back to DSE store each time they just give me a new one.

Wait… So let me get this straight… They give you a new one because it did it's job properly…

      • For 99% of surges, it should do its job properly and keep on working.

It's pretty unusual to see one that has failed, unless there was a lightning strike within 100m of the house where it is installed. Another cause is a vehicle hitting a power pole, causing the higher-voltage lines at the top of the pole to drop across the 415V/240V residential distribution lines. Both circumstances are unusual.

It's good to know that it sacrificed itself and stopped working. I've seen surge busters where the surge overwhelmed the protection circuit, and then it let the surge through.

  • Got two of these when I purchased on of my laptops… one for dad's laptop, one for me. Might get another one or two.

Can you plug this in the wall and then attach a 4-way normal plug to protect multiple items like TVs and NAS?

  • Hi It's &7.50 at Chandstone closing down store. I saw, there were few yesterday.

  • Expires on the 14th

    Is there really lifetime warranty?

I bought some Jackson Surge Protectors but it has a 2-3 year clause.

I guess dicksmith does something similar.

Maybe there is someway to surge it by plugging it into a electrical diesel generator to get warranty covered once a year.

In other words, if your one isn't broken, maybe it's time to break it somehow and replace it to stay under warranty.

  • Just bought 3.

    What do these do exactly?

    • why you bought 3 then …

      • +3

Because it's a bargain! You must be new to ozbargain.
