CarNextDoor Causing a Credit Check

Hi,

I created an account with CarNextDoor in case I ever need to use it and I have been hit with a credit check.

I never would've applied had I known this. My credit score has dropped since the check.

Has it happened to anyone else? Beware if you create an account with CarNextDoor. This didn't happen with Flexicar or GoGet.

Used to be cheap but since uber bought it things are bad

  • I never would've applied had I known this. My credit score has dropped since the check.

Why do you care? This isn't the states where your ability to get a job and buy groceries depends on your credit score.

    • I'd like to know as well. I did not even know there were credit scores in Australia. Obviously renting a car doesn't affect your creditworthiness "by any sane measure".

  • Doesn't constantly checking your score also effect your score?

I've never bothered checking what mine is as you need to pay. I just check my credit report for any suspicious activity on occasion. It generally gives you a credit rating anyway which tells you the score range you're in.

    • No it's a "soft" enquiry.

Also you can get it for free — just tell illion or equifax that you've been denied credit and their automated system spits out a free report. Which arguably you shouldn't even have to pay for to begin with, as they are collecting data on you (with or without your consent).

      • Seems like a lot of hassle just to find out a pointless number when I already know the rating.

        • It takes like 2 minutes and is entirely online. I'm not saying do it every week. Do it once in a while, you get the actual report I don't think you get a score.

          • @meowsers: Well that's what I said before then. You've got to pay if you want the actual score. The reports, which include the rating, are free.

            • @apsilon: The scores are irrelevant. Banks use their own scoring models and not the consumer facing/retail scores you see.

Why are people so worried about credit scores? Like are you in extreme financial distress or something.

Credit cards will reject or grant based on their target criteria, not on third party systems.

  • they tell you they will do a credit check at sign up. what's the problem?

    Checking credit files/score don't matter.
    Scores don't matter anyway

My advice is don't use them

  • Social scores are coming.

MasterCard is trialling an ESG programme where they cut users off if they buy too much junk.

It's only a matter of time before CS + ESG becomes a reality.

Interesting. Do you have any more info or a source on that?

Uber globally still never made a profit.
Most large car rental companies will require 24h before you can rent. In that time they will make a risk assesment. Europecar lies at anyone that walks in by saying we have no car now!
Many hotel booking platforms force you to agree to share information with companies they are affiliated with.
There are both advantages and penalties. We had used Agoda a fair bit. You rate hotels, they rate you as a client. Since we left rooms clean we had received whole apartments for the price of a room.

Wow, thanks for pointing it out, I must've missed it, or saw it and thought nothing of it.

Checking with Experian, it seems to have been applied as a hard check for $1.

Between this and the insurance concerns, I'll only be using the service once, I think. It's a shame because otherwise the service seems to function well with quick support for an account issue.
