Did you google "Dutch oven" though?

  • +5

but how will you afford this transport this home with petrol prices so high /s

    • +3

Price lock with 7-11 app using a chopper, then fill Dutch oven with 'cheap' petrol

  • The usual debate, why not go for Le creuset if you are using it?

    • +3

      $200-400?!!

      • +1

Fair enough. Just that I feel the colours of the item is enough to justify the price. lol wrong website to post my opinion

Horses for courses. I would only use Le Creuset indoors or on gas stoves, not on campfires or charcoal BBQs. The ALDI ones are good for camping, or if you want something a bit more reputable, then Lodge cast iron cookware. The Aldi Dutch Oven design is pretty good for campfires as it has the rim on the lid so you can put coals/briquettes on top without them falling off. Can't do that with any of the Le Creuset gear as the lids are all rounded.

Le creuse are so expensive here compared to Europe feels like a big mark up on them

  • (150 credits in terms of Coles) xD

oh nice, been waiting for this one. I heard the aldi dutch oven is suitable for making bread, which I've been wanting to give a try.

The ALDI cast iron is very poor quality.
It's very brittle, poorly seasoned and very hard if not impossible to season.
Have had two of their pans crack on me when camping.

Lodge brand is much better quality, I think they must use higher carbon steel and proper cooling control when they manufacture theirs

    • +2

How does cast iron crack? From heat?
I thought cast iron cookware would be indestructible.

      • -2

One had an enamel coating that cracked apart when put into cold water. The other pan cracked when it dropped on the floor like a China plate

        • +2

Enamel coating is literally made of glass. Glass does not take well to sudden and extreme temperature changes (e.g. going from ripping hot on the stove to being plunged into cold water). You would be likely to have the same (or similar) experience even with a Le Creuset if you treated it the same way. This is why it is best practice to bring enamel-coated cookware to temperature slowly.

Cast iron is also inherently brittle due to its crystalline structure and the inclusions of "impurities" (like large amounts of carbon, which contribute to its hardness but therefore also its brittleness). I'm not at all surprised that a cast iron pan cracked when you dropped it on the floor. Again, I wouldn't be surprised if a Le Creuset (or any other brand) would crack/break if dropped. Ironically you say that "Lodge brand is much better quality, I think they must use higher carbon steel" but higher carbon content would actually make the cast iron more brittle and rust-prone.

This is cast iron, it is not carbon steel. Carbon steel actually contains LESS carbon than cast iron so its not as brittle. They are both useful in different situations.

Well clearly the answer is just to buy this, build a forge in the backyard, and then quench it properly.

      • My man!

    • +1

I've had very different experiences and am very happy with both the skillets I've bought (2 different sizes) and the dutch oven.
Very happy with all of them.

      • Can you cook eggs on them without oil and sticking?

        • Yes, did you season your cast iron?

    • -1

Same as everything Aldi. In my experience they sell only cheap Chinese junk that ends up in landfill. I’m not a fan of their shelf food either but that’s not always bad.

      • Agree,
I do find the odd non-Chinese stuff and it's not half-bad.

I mainly to there to get the blue cheese and get out 😅

        • Aldi has blue cheese?! How's the price and quality?

          • +1

@Fobsessive: It's basically a cheap version of blue Costello.

            It's $5 for 200g where as Costello is around $7 for 150g

            Tastes great! Almost indistinguishable

            • +1

@Exprise: Woolies Thomax Dux is $5.5/200g and nice too. Blue camembert, although the camembert part isn't advertised.

  • The search continues for a jaffle iron with a diagonal divider.

Anyone know rough diameter of the Dutch oven?

Also, anyone try preheating these jaffle irons and doing eggs inside and use it as a weight for steak in the pan?

    TIA. <3

I bought one of their large cast iron frypans without the wooden handle a while back, and it's been fantastic value.

    • why without wooden handle?

      • +1

The handle is part of the casting so you can put in the oven.

  • +2

Just to clarify, Le Crueset is enamelled. Cast iron is not, it a bare metal.

    • +1

The Aldi enamelled one is fine, been using it for 5 years.

  • +2

I purchased an Adventure Ridge cast iron pot today after having stellar experience with the AR cast iron pan and the Crofton enameled cast iron pot from Aldi the last few years.

    For $20 I think it's no-brainer.
