Paid $66 for a Puncture Repair. Did I Get Ripped off?

Hi all,

I’ve had punctures repaired over the last decade or so ranging from $20 to $35. The puncture repair done today set me back almost double that.

Was just wondering if anyone has had similar experiences lately or if this is just inflation / I got ripped off.

Note: I did not ask around for quotes, and a quote also wasn’t given to me before service performed. I should’ve asked but thought the price wouldn’t be much different than in the past.

  • Few days ago, I took my car to TyrePower in Baulkham Hills Sydney to look for a possible air leak. They checked and told me the issue is not with the tyre but with the wheel. There seems to be a crack in the wheel. Need $330 to send it for repair. Since the air is not going out that much, I just opted to stay with the cracked wheel for the time being (goes down 1psi a day). But they told me they did some kind of a temporary fix on the wheel and charged me $60. Checked the air pressure just two days after and its the same as before, going down. Looks like they just charged me $60 to tell me that wheel has a leak and didn't fix anything. Really pissed at them for this.

  • Had a puncture fixed at mycar last October for $39 and the guy even said I didn't have to pay for it, but I insisted (warranty). Just got another puncture (different tyre) as at April 2024 they've jacked their prices by 25% up to $49. Which is making me consider buying my own professional setup for family and friends. Means I'll be able to fix punctures on the side of the road (bead breaking, plug+patch… Rebalance when I get home)

When a whole new tyre is only $200 for premium and $50 for a 2nd hand with 80% tread…$50 hmmm.

  • Buy a puncture repair kit for $66. Can repair 20+ for that amount of money!

Actually, you can buy two kits at anaconda and have change…

  • Looks like I got ripped off then as just paid $70 for a nail thanks to some local building work. The guy said it was a harder job than usual because the tyre had a pre-existing repair which required a more thorough inspection - something to do with complying to Australian standards. Not sure if he was legit or not and I don't know if the tyre was previously repaired as only bought the car last year. Apparently there actually is an "Australian Tyre Repair Standard" - https://www.ozracingwheels.com.au/tyres/tyre-repair/
