VIC - Where Do You Buy Your Prime Cut Steaks?

Thought I'd post here to find out where does everyone buy your prime cut steaks, or favorite butcher when it comes to good quality meats, rib cuts, aged meat etc. I know we can't go wrong to get them from Prahran Market, South Melbourne Market and Victoria Market, I actually envy those that live nearby those areas.

Any good butchers to recommend in the eastern suburbs? Keen to support the small businesses in the process.

Not responding to OP, but a side point.

I remember watching ACA about how butchers were ripping people off with their meat - and they showed you how you could save up to 50% off.

Steps to save 50% (or whatever amount it was)

    1. Go to a live stock auction and buy a cow
    2. Pay to transport it to a slaughterer
    3. Transport carcas to a butcher to chop up
    4. Buy an industrial size freezer to store all the meat at home

    Simples!

I think in that same segment, they also presented about how eating apples was bad for you.

    ACA at it's best!

I wonder if anyone actually did this.

      • I know a friend who drives into the regional area to get a few lambs from the farm. At one point, he brought back 11 lambs orders.

I live in a regional area. Having a mobile butcher visit to dispatch some of your stock and cut them up on site is not unusual at all. You know the history of the meat and there is no other manipulation. Nothing tastes better. All you need is a big deep freezer.

Downside is all your meat is frozen with the associated cons. Cryo vaccing all that meat = time + $.

    • Haha so in other words, become a butcher and you can get the meat for "close to" the price they can get it at? Sounds like a sh*t idea!

I'm not in the 'eastern suburbs', but would recommend that you visit your local butcher shops and build a relationship with them.
You can usually tell from the outside of the shop and the displays what it might be like. But if you also take the plunge and just try some, and find your own favourite taking into account the quality, price, and other things you find of value.

IMO having a friendly ongoing relationship with your butcher is worth heaps when you want to order something special, or get something de-boned, etc.

    • In terms of location wise, I've been going to the butcher in Stud Park and Dandenong Market. They're good enough for me, in terms of lamb ribs its always Dandenong Market for me.

Don't quite have the relationship as its usually fast moving and we don't always get to deal with the same person.

        Vegemite Sausages, really?

Really! Vegemite makes a fantastic beef stock and what could be more Aussie, Aussie, Aussie?

O'Neills Butchery is the original home of the Vegemite and Cheese Sausage. We have been producing them for many years, meaning our recipe has been tested and perfected. Don't be fooled by imitators! If you love your Vegemite, you will love our Beef, Vegemite and Cheese snags.

  • Amazon?

  • Dandenong Plaza Market Place, I usually buy whole tenderloins and cut it up into eye fillet steaks.

Oakdale in Dande South are also pretty good. Buy a whole porterhouse and cut it up into steaks.

DirectFresh in Bayswater is generally average in prices but you can snag good deals sometimes.

  • Not "ozbargain" prices, but I do like my "free range" meat from:

    https://canningsfreerangebutchers.com.au/

they're in the eastern suburbs and do delivery.
