Uber Driver Attitude Post-Covid - Prefering Routes Which Is Most Profitable to Them

Hi OzBargainers,

I'm not sure if anyone else has experience a change in Uber Driver attitudes recently, i.e. post pandemic.
I've been a Uber user for many years before the pandemic, travelling almost every single week for business, all over different Australian cities. They range mostly from friendly to quiet-yet-respectful. If I have a preference, they will oblige readily (and never shown they are annoyed).

Today, on two separate trips I asked the driver to avoid the freeway. Just last week, I was in a rush and let the Uber auto navigation used the freeway, which somehow caused $20 more than usual (not only toll fees, but somehow maybe longer route to veer out to freeway and back in or something). Also Freeways is supposed to be fast but not always in Australian cities, and if you get stuck in a freeway jam, there is no way to turn out into the side streets to change route.
Anyway, both of today's drivers were not happy at all about the request:

First Driver
Me: can we please avoid the freeway.
Driver: Why? That will take much longer
Me: It doesn't matter if it takes longer
Driver: It matters to me, it will take extra 10 minutes of my time.

Second Driver:
Me: can we avoid the freeway please.
Driver: Freeway is much quicker.
(… some other words, back and forth)
Me: Don't worry I will direct you. Go straight here and turn right at the next lights.
Driver: My English is not very good. I don't understand this way (using his hand to point left) or that way (using his hand to point right). I can only follow this (pointing to Uber map on mobile.)

With the second driver - I won't mention his ethnic background because I don't want to make this into a race issue which it is not, and I am also non-anglo myself (but of course I or anyone can fall into racial bias subconsciously). He is from a country that is a part of the British Commonwealth of nations, and English is definitely in the school curriculum. So even if he just arrived yesterday in Australia (which is not), he should understand the language I would use to direct a driver are 3 words: straight, left, right.
Incidentally the radio music that was playing is of course an English pop music, and personalised stickers on dashboard was also in English (yes it's just circumstantial evidence).
It is downright insulting for a Uber driver to claim they cannot understand simple instructions like Straight/Left/Right - this is insulting because I don't think he is telling the truth and I assume Uber won't hire anyone who does not understand basic directions (straight, left, right) - please tell me I'm wrong. For many years, I have never had a driver (Uber / Taxi) telling me he cannot follow my instructions, even though some previous drivers language skills were poor, I still communicated slowly and clearly and there was no problem.

Sorry for elaborating so much on the second driver. The main point is that both 1st and 2nd drivers clearly not happy about my choice to avoid freeway. From their point of view, their 1st priority is speed. Finishing one job quickly, get another job - therefore more money. I totally understand their priorities and also sympathise with them as someone recently pointed out that the Gig-Economy is like modern slavery. Aside from the unpleasant experience, I don't hold anything against them. I have not given them a rating, although my initial thought was to give them a '1'.

My question is basically - has anyone noticed such behaviour in Uber drivers recently, that they prefer to take the fastest route possible. The other question is do you know if Uber itself is responsible by implementing any new policies that is really squeezing these drivers who are trying to make an extra buck?

  • Oh no. Underpaid drivers are trying to maximise fares.

Is that in defence of driving a more expensive route for the passenger?

Oh No, you found under paid drivers are under pressure from fuel price rises and zero compensation for alternative routes from know it all aholes :P

If you want a scenic tour, use a taxi …

when i spoke to a friend who works for uber (also works with me at a different job) there didn't seem to be any new policies that squeezed drivers, but this was about a month and a half ago (he went back to his own country so i haven't spoken to him since).

he did talk to me about surge pricing, and how the more experienced drivers cancel rides in their current area (that they haven't picked up yet), sign off the app, and then go to the area with surge pricing, sign back on to the app and take advantage of higher fares.

Never ubered… so no havent noticed

Uber follows an upfront pricing model. The Uber driver might be penalised or not get paid if they deviate from Uber's route.

    • +2

Exactly this. It's a common scam that peeps will get an Uber, then ask drivers to go a different route, then lodge a complaint in the app afterwards.

  • I don't understand how using the freeway can cause an extra $20 in fees. Don't you just pay up front and then they take you from point A to B? Who cares which way they get you there so long as it is in a reasonable amount of time.

While we are on the topic of Uber drivers, can anyone explain why they are such bad drivers? I always look for the 'U' sign in car windows when a driver does something stupid or is impeding traffic. They also never seem to be in a hurry as I regularly see them driving 10-20km/hr under the posted limit.

While we are on the topic of Uber drivers, can anyone explain why they are such bad drivers?

Its a very low paid job once you take GST out, tolls, then ubers 30% cut, but it keeps going you have to pay running cost of the car, insurances etc.

You're at the whim of who wants a ride. You can be out for hours and only get a handful of rides, or rides that take you so far away from home, that you keep 'working' rather than driving back empty aka no pay.

So just like taxis of the day basically…

Completely unregulated and pays dogshit, what do you expect?

Fantastic business model, unless you're a driver.

      • I find that is a major cop out. Just because a job is low pay does not mean you have to do it badly. People with that mindset will never get out of badly paying jobs.

I also have a mate that drives Uber and he makes a killing so not sure about all the low pay stuff.

        • It’s not that they are doing it badly, it’s more that anyone who is any good at it is more likely to get a better paying job. You end up with the least skilled people doing the lowest paying jobs.

How does your mate ‘make a killing’ with Uber? Does he account for his running costs in his ‘killing’?

          • @Euphemistic: Has a hybrid so low running costs and takes the Uber-X fares ( I think that is the premo one?). He also hits people up for tips every time and gets a lot through that.

  • Prefering Routes Which Is Most Profitable to Them

Shock…. someone who wants to make money, while you want to save money.

Uber drivers are basically paid per km plus the world's smallest amount per minute. So yeah a 10km trip that takes 10 mins is more profitable to them, than a 10km trip that takes 20 mins!! as they can do more trips per hour = more money.

Basically what you pay to uber, take the gst off, take the tolls off, then take 30% off that, and that is what the driver MIGHT get unless uber did that scam fixed price fare for you that worked out cheaper the km/min rate, so uber pays them the lower rate and pockets the rest.

Why on earth would they not want to take the fastest route possible?

    • Just because they say it's faster doesn't mean it is. I've had a driver try to screw me by taking toll roads for no reason because it leads to the exact same freeway which I insisted he take originally but he insisted it was faster via toll roads………1/5 star and a refund complaint to him.

When you take an Uber, both driver and passenger agree to the route that is on the app. If you want to take your own route, hire a private chauffeur, drive yourself, or walk with your own two legs.

I never understand why people who choose the cheapest bargain basement option then choose to be fussy. Do you also go to Maccas and ask for the patty to be cooked medium rare?
