    "Moscow"

    ….lets see how this goes?

    • +3

      I think it's gonna bomb

      • -1

Boycotting anything that hints of russia

        • +3

Just to be that one annoying dude, Moscow got its name from the Finns and means black river

Apart from a catchy name, what on earth has this bike got to do with Russia? The manufacturer appears to be a German company.

Whilst Putin is a textbook definition of war criminal, coward and thief, one shouldn't overlook a population that are effectively brainwashed via a government controlled media - and the ones that aren't, are threatened with jail for speaking up against their corrupt government. Most, if not all, Russian people living abroad are furious, horrified and ashamed of what Putin has done with Russia.

Don't hate an entire country and its people for the actions of a dictator.

        • Lol we got a memo at my work that we must remove Bic lighters with pictures of Russia on them, they had a set of "cities of the world" art lighter and had to get rid of the Moscow ones

We all just rolled our eyes

          • @TheRealCJ: The Ukraine lighter will sell well, because that country is on fire, true to the theme of a lighter.

@TheRealCJ: we all must support the 'current thing'!

    Get $444 worth

    No. Massively inflated.

Anti-Theft Alarm is $55 on their site while $22 on Amazon for exact same thing which is already inflated Aliexpress junk.

Same thing for indicators $55 vs $25. Probably same for helmet etc too.

    • Helmet looks like the cheapest of the cheap.
      It all does.

      Probably $100 all up.

      • +2

Can confirm. I purchased one of their F1000 (21Ah fat tyre) bikes and will summarise as follows:

        • The "bonus" accessories are useful but definitely in the "cheap and cheerful" category. The cable lock should NOT be used as the only way to secure your ride (easily cut). I gave the (AU standards-approved) helmet to a family member that I don't particularly care about. 😉
        • Shipping/delivery is generally quite fast
        • Out of box experience was good
        • After-sales service is terrible if you don't live near one of their retail stores
        • Have you tried it on the beach?
Does it feel like you’re oversized for the bike? I haven’t tried a small frame folding bike.
How hard is it to fold, lift and put in the boot, being 34kg?
          (Sorry for the diversion OP)

          • +1

            @slowcoach:

Have you tried it on the beach?

Yes. Great on the wet sand but terrible on the soft stuff. It's not designed to be a beach cruiser.

Does it feel like you’re oversized for the bike?

Not at all. It's just different ergonomics (I switch between it and my road bike and my non-electric commuter bike).

Because it's a semi-cargo bike you really get to appreciate the lower centre of gravity when you load it up with stuff.

How hard is it to fold, lift and put in the boot, being 34kg?

It's not like sticking a Razor scooter in the boot, but it's manageable for one person:

            1. Fold-down the stem/handlebars (halves the height)
            2. Fold-down the pedals
            3. Lift seat and remove the (big and heavy) battery
            4. Fold the frame (halves the length)
            5. Stick in your boot

Here's what it looks like folded-up.

          • @slowcoach: I have the NCM Aspen Plus with fat tyres and ride that on the beach pretty well. Not the super soft sand but the denser stuff closer to water is perfect. Battery power lasts for hours and have the modded off-road throttle too (not legal on roads).

It's extremely heavy though, I used to take front wheel and battery off then chuck it in back of 4x4 but became a chore. Now use a retractable towbar bike mount that helps.

NCM bikes are often 10% off direct from Leon Cycles (the official importer) if you have the patience to wait for a deal.

Before these comments go to hell, some thoughts on this bike:

    • big battery, low power motor:
if you're looking for something with a decent range, this will do nicely. 768Wh is prettty good, but it also comes with a pretty low-quality motor. Das-Kit are just okay, with a pretty low torque (55nm) compared to other motors in its class.

    • decent tyres
Shwalbe Smart Sams are basically the default for most hybrid ebike in this kind of price range, so it's good to see that NCM haven't skimped on them

    • tektro hydraulic brakes.
Also pretty standard for these price range bikes; not terrible, but personally I would use them until it's time to replace the pads, then instead of spending 30 bucks on a new set of pads I'd spend another 50-60 bucks on a pair of Shimano MT200s to replace the whole brake set. Most bike shops or online will sell a pre-bled Shimano BR-MT200 brake set for about 45-50 dollars per brake, and since this bike has externally routed cables they should just bolt straight on without any fuss; much better braking power than the tektro, and (this is a personal preference, mind) much less spongy lever feel which is what shimano is really good at.

    • Suntour XCM Forks
Actually pretty good, I'd prefer a Rockshoks Judy for this price, but for a lower-budget fork the XCM is perfectly serviceable.

All in all, I'd say it's not a terrible option for this price range, although if you're looking for more power, you should take the hit to battery life in order to get something like this: https://www.99bikes.com.au/velectrix22-ascent-grey which doesn't have as good forks but an 80nm Bafang motor.

Also, please be sure to temper your expectations. This looks like a mountain bike but it won't get you very far off road. If you're looking for a bike that can commute and not have to constantly worry about mud, grass, or puddles (which after the floods is actually something you may have to be concerned about if you live nearby bodies of water) then this will work just fine, but anything more than graded fire roads will be a real struggle.

    • Das-Kit are just okay

      High build quality
      High performance
      Low price

      Pick two ;-)

Das-Kit are beautifully-built, reliable and pretty easy on the wallet, but they definitely don't push the envelope for output
Bafang are hit and miss on the quality front but priced to sell and offer great performance
Bosch pump out wallet-reaming gear that screams quality and offer amazing performance

      YMMV of course.

    • 55nm means about 150N / 15kg force on the tyre, right? That sounds like plenty for the road, if not so good for climbing muddy trails.

      For comparison, 250W @ 25km/hr = 36N, so only 13Nm torque cruising.

As for upgrading the disc brakes, I'd consider just changing the front brake, as that does all the work when you stop hard. (less so on a heavy ebike maybe?)

      • Not clear on the comparison. This bike is 250W so you are saying this bike has 13Nm torque for cruising?

        • I'm just trying to give an idea what 55Nm means, - it is 4x the cruise torque in this case.

          For a hill-climb, say 250W/50Nm = 5 rad/s = 7km/hr. Does that make sense? Any slower and less power.
A higher torque motor could go even slower with the same power.

But if you stick to the roads, you don't need that combination of power and torque. 55 is plenty. High torque = low gear.

  • Good bike, standard price + absolute junk "freebies".
So I wouldn't personally consider this a "bargain"

I can't neg yet, but consider this a neg to this "bargain".
The junk "valued at $444" is worthless.

    • The junk "valued at $444" is worthless.

      Worthless? I disagree with you.

I think it's worth closer to $100 (or $180 if you can take advantage of the in-store parts of the offer)

      • I think the bike looks good, but the poor quality and over-valuing of the extras may make buyers question the quality/value of the bike.

Who puts a cable lock on a $2000 bike? I guess the shop likes repeat sales :-)

        • may make buyers question the quality/value of the bike

Fair enough. Makes me question the integrity of the seller.

Who puts a cable lock on a $2000 bike?

I do - alongside a good quality U-lock. As the old saying goes - locks only stop the honest or opportunistic thieves. My bike's not left outside overnight or at train station all day. The cable lock helps secure the quick release front wheel and helmet while the U-lock holds the frame to whatever I'm securing it to while I'm at the shops etc.

      • You stated "The cable lock should NOT be used as the only way to secure your ride (easily cut). I gave the (AU standards-approved) helmet to a family member that I don't particularly care about. "
so all in all, you're paying RRP for a $2199 bike. And the "deal" is that you get some junk, half of it (price-wise) you wouldn't even use yourself.

This isn't a bargain. It's them getting rid of some shit they though they've realized they aren't going to be able to sell at their insane markups.
You're better off waiting for a sale on these at leoncycle and using the saved money to buy quality locks, helmet and other accessories.

        • Jesus Christ mate. Are you trying to be the new JV in the comments section?

          You stated

Yes, that's EXACTLY what I stated (congrats on being able to copy and paste BTW) and I stand by it. I would not (and do not) use it on its own to secure an ebike. But I use it whenever I secure the bike away from home.

You're delusional if you think you're going to get an Abus Granit Extreme 59 (or similar) as a freebie with a Ducati 1199 Panigale let alone a cheap and cheerful ebike.

          you wouldn't even use yourself

I do use it. Read the comment to @manic about 3 hours before you added this drivel.

Another addition to the troll block list. FFS.

          • @[Deactivated]: I love how you completely ignore the points I made and cherry picked.
At what point did I ever mention the "abus granit extreme 59 (or similar)" ?
I said, wait to get the bike on sale from leoncycle and use the saved money on HIGHER quality stuff.

            10% savings = $219.90
You can get a Kryptonite Evolution Mini-7 for $80-90.
            A Solid helmet for $99
            lights for $25
            Alarm I wouldn't spend a cent.

Rest is stuff you can do yourself in 10-30 minutes with minimal knowledge.

I'm entitled to have a differing opinion on this "bargain". Doesn't mean I'm a troll.
Calling people a "troll" purely because they disagree with you is such a low quality attempt at taking the "moral high ground".
Block me all you like, I legitimately couldn't care less.
All I did was share my opinions on this deal and you got so emotionally invested in it that you decided to attempt to attack my character.
I've got zero f's to give about some random person blocking me on a site because I happen to disagree with on one very negligible thing.

You've clearly devolved this into something that I've no interest in investing further time or energy into.
So I'll be ceasing my replies. I hope you can respect that and also move on.

            Thankyou.

On the bike only - wife recently got one of these for commuting and absolutely loves it. Battery holds up well, heaps of grunt - for the money well worth it, perfect for a beginner who was worried they might not stick with it so didn't want to spend $4k.

On the mountain bike side, I actually borrowed it to take on an overnight camp - fire roads in but in pretty poor condition after the floods. I was genuinely amazed with how well it held up. It copped an absolute thrashing, well above what I was expecting, I was with two others with $8k+ EMB's and kept up with them easily. I wouldn't want to try it too often, but again for the money, thing handled itself extremely well. Did overheat the motor on one 6km uphill slog, but that's probably partly because it makes it so easy to just keep powering up.

    • Battery holds up well

I don't know if their NCM bikes and ET Cycles share the same battery pack supplier but the 1008Wh (21Ah) battery on the F1000 gives me well over 130km of range (yet to run it flat) while using it with maximum pedal assistance. At 90kg I'm not the lightest payload for it either!

Worst range I've experienced (based on remaining battery life) was just shy of 110km after a round trip between Redfern and Galston Gorge. Warm day and LOTS of hills.

      • How does the 250watt motor cope with the heavy bike/fat tyres?

        • How does the 250watt motor cope with the heavy bike/fat tyres?

Really well, IMHO. Snappy pedal-assist take-offs from the lights, battery and motor run cool, very good range based on the rides I've done so far.

          • @[Deactivated]: Perhaps their 250w motor is more like 500w in reality then.

          • @[Deactivated]: BTW, do you have the offroad kit installed?

            • @OzHan: The ET Cycle F1000 comes with a throttle and the throttle wiring loom and the included Das-Kit C7 controller has a simple code-based method to change the power assistance threshold. However, as a reasonably proficient casual cyclist, i just use it in default pedal assist mode so I still get to give my legs a workout and get maximum battery life.

If I want two-wheel speed, I roll out my motorbike. ;-)

              • @[Deactivated]: Not sure about F1000, though most other NCM bikes don't come with a throttle (available with the $250 offroad kit), the code is only applicable in the offroad display c7-bb7 (off road private land use only version -international as indicated in the link).

                • @OzHan:

                  Not sure about F1000

I am, given that I own one. 😛 It comes with a throttle and a C7 with code-unlockable settings.

                  • @[Deactivated]: Congrats you've saved $250! I'm a bit hesitant to go down the fat tyre route - too heavy/cumbersome to move esp if you need it chuck it at the back of vehicle. also came across a youtube which claims fat tyre bikes like et-cycle can be dangerous to steer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuCXulN37BA

                    • +1

@OzHan: From my personal experience, I don't feel like I saved anything. It was a stated feature inclusion at the time I bought it: "Throttle to get you up those hills!"

As for weight, portability, reliability and handling - YMMV. I've put close to 3,000km on it now and couldn't be happier.

That said, post-assembly I got my bike safety inspected/tweaked by a local bike shop (as recommended on the website) which is something old mate in the YouTube video did not do.

  • If you want to derestrict your ebike for off road (throttle), NCM may not be a good option - you need to spend another $250 to buy an offload kit.

    • What would you recommend for that?
Looking at getting an unrestricted bicycle with throttle. Was thinking the Venice as it's 48V and a Throttle kit.

      • Sorry mate have not used a venice can't comment really.
