[VIC] Is The Vic Government Energy Comparison Site Still The Best Option for Comparing Suppliers???

Hi all

Up to now I have always used the Victorian Govt comparison site when it comes to looking for a better price for Gas or Electricity. I recently received the notification that my current provider (Globird) were putting up their prices as part of the annual hike so it's time to start looking again.

Are the local government comparison sites still the best option to try and find the best price? iSelect, Compare The Market and the like are still operating so presumably they must have something going from them but I know they hound you if you provide your contact details.

So for those in Vic (primarily), what's the best option for comparing energy providers.

Cheers

    • Thanks.

I presume this is Federal sponsored rather than State. Is it significantly different compared to State?

EDIT - In fact when I put in my postcode it says I should try the Vic Energy Compare site. No benefit to this site unfortunately.

Energy Made Easy is for the rest of the country because Victoria has it's own energy compare website.

For me (not in Vic at the moment), I go to energy made easy to check the top 3 plans with the lowest annual estimate (based on my actual usage from last 12 months), and then check against the plan offered by cashback website like CR and SB to see if I'm better off with their plan after cashback. Rinse and repeat after 4-6 months.

Id say the vic govt one is still the best but it takes a bit of time for price changes to be fed through it

    • I thought retailers are supposed to send in plans/tariffs immediately.

I use that to get best couple of plans and then use my excel sheet with actual usage to decide.

https://choice.billhero.com.au/ is a good paid service

Providers have to pay to be on iSelect, Compare the market, etc, thus not all of them are on there and you're not getting the best comparison. They continue to exist because of marketing, nothing else.

It's a pretty lucrative market for comparison websites, because all the data is free and widely available, it's all just about maintaining a half decent website and a lot of marketing.

  • Thanks for the replies, I will stick with the government offering.

  • Wattever.com.au is still the best.

    • Can I ask why that is the opinion? Not being funny or anything, just curious to know what this site offers over the government one(s).

      Cheers

Wattever is independent enough not to call you afterwards, and also takes into account of solar feedin.

However, their plans info I find can be out of date easily

  • The government one is what I use and recently switched to ReAmp which was half the price of my existing provider, AGL. Should have switched sooner.
