  • Does this use more or less electricity than a normal oven ie normal being inbuilt convection oven

    • +7

      I would say yes.

I have one and due to the smaller volume needed to heat up, this oven heats up faster and cooks faster.

Pork Roasts with crackling are amazing with this unit.

I also baked cakes and even a Xmas Turkey…see the extension ring (silver ring) that extends the volume of the over to accomodate big birds (not the yellow talking type).

      I'd recommend.

    • They use less power, noticeably less. I've compared both on my household wide energy monitor. Basically uses less power to begin with, preheats much faster, cooks quicker. Turned off sooner. If your looking at saving some power ($$) then that's one valid reason to buy this. We use ours quite regularly.

I will point out that Kmart and many other stores sell these for around the $30-35 mark. I got mine from Kmart for $29 or thereabouts I think. Few months back…

Have had one of these for a while (not same brand)
find it excellent for cooking most things…altho tried a cake recently and didn't go so well
but always hard to know -oven or ingredients - or me stuffed it up :)

EDIT: and this is $4.00 less than i paid last year fyi.

They had these on special about a month ago for $35 less for cash, so I bought it for $34. Roasts a nice fat free chicken.

    • True Ozbargain form!

Maybe can buy TGG gift card from Post office so can get another 20% off?

    $25 at Aldi next wed

      • +1

that's cheap was $32 a about 3 weeks ago, saw them while shopping at aldi.

good for most things, can be tricky for cakes as the middle don't cook as well.
hence need to cover the top once done and resume cooking!

    • +1

Looks like the Aldi one doesn't have the metal extension ring.

  • Anyone tried reverse boiling on one of these things? Clarity - making a soup and using the convection to boil the ingredients (as the heat source is in the lid.) It's just such a large easy to clean bowl and all….

    • Heating is from top, but quite evenly distributed so won't that result in a crust on top of the soup? Unlike a stovetop you won't have the convention flow that moves/stirs the soap. Not too keen to try that atm.

This type of oven is great. Saves a heap of cooking/heating time. Highly recommended.

    • Maybe if you put the soup inside a baking dish and cover with lid / aluminium foil? It probably wont heat well inside the glass bowl it comes with.

Better off boiling it in a pot and putting it into a slow cooker then setting it on high for large amounts of soup

already selling at Aldi for $25 for the last two weeks. everything the same except for the white plastic holder which is I think Kmart is better.

    • The Aldi one does not have the extension bowl, does the Kmart one have it?

      • u mean the piece of metal that connect the glass and the oven? is included in Kmart.

    • How does the Kmart one compare to this? $39 standard price vs. $35 clearance isn't that much of a difference.

  • We have one that we don't use fairly often, when we do though it cooks thing super quick and does a pretty good job!

Can't comment on price though as we have had ours for a few years.

  • it looks great!

  • I've only seen these on-line and they sound good but how easy are they to clean. Can all the parts go in the dishwasher or is it a hand job?

    • -4

I think it would prefer a blow job

      • Not at this temperate you won't.

      • +3

        Maybe just clean the rim

    • +1

it's really just the bowl to wash, can't put the lid in as it has the electric thingy like in a kettle!

      • So the bowl can go in the dishwasher, does the lid get dirty too?

      • +2

Just give lid a wipe inside with a damp cloth as it can get a bit oily from the vapour of fatty meats & other foods.

    • +1

I think you can actually put some water and dish washing liquid in and it can clean itself. Never tried it out myself as it is quicker just to clean it in the basin.

      • +1

Except if you've baked a roast (or any other meat) straight on the rack, tipping them over so that they're flat on the bottom of the dish, then a quick self-clean means no having to scrub the cooked on juices, fat etc from the racks. We pour in enough boiling water to cover the racks with a bit of detergent. by the time the clean cycle is done, the steam from the boiling water has done a good job of loosening any cooked on spatter on the the lid too, so it's a breeze to give a quick wipe over.

    • this thing does everything!

      • But it won't let you bet on your mobile.

  • Does this baby cook rice?

    • While you could probably find a way to make it cook rice, why would you want to? I think you would have better success with an inexpensive rice cooker, or even a microwave oven after a bit of trial-and-error to find a suitable rice/water mix ratio and cooking time.

The biggest danger with rice cooking is letting it boil dry. Rice cookers turn off the main element when the cooking vessel reaches about 150 degrees, which it only does after the water has boiled away. The "keep warm" element stays on.

Disclaimer: I only know about using rice cookers to produce Asian-style rice, the "sticky" rice that clumps together. If you want "fluffy" rice, where the grains don't stick together, I think boiling and then draining is the only method that works.

  • They're selling the. George Foreman brand one at Burwood One Coles for $30 this week

  • There are two types of convection oven that look like this. One type has a halogen bulb as the light source, which spills quite a lot of light into the room. The other type has a heater element that glows dimly red, and doesn't light up the room.

Anyone know which type this one is? I've heard that maybe the halogen bulb ones have a short life - does anyone know if that is true?

    • +1

      Heating element one. Spiral element.

      • Thanks!

  • Can you use this to 'fry' stuff, like fish fingers.

    • haven't tried with mine…but i would say yes without a problem as my one has 2 levels of racking (removable wire)-so as long as this was the same should be fine.

EDIT: dry frying is what this machine is about- not oily frying if you get my drift (foil laying below cooked item works :)

    • Isn't that baking? Yes you can oven cook fish fingers (bake them)

  • Just bought one for myself. Wasn't really looking at getting one before today. We don't have an oven, so this might come in handy. Will give it a go on some drumsticks later on!

Bought it with about 15% with cash.

    • Bought a Woolies chicken pieces roasting pack and some potatoes. Gave that a shot in the machine. It took longer than expected, taking up to 1.5 hours to get it all cooked. In hindsight, I should've used a higher temperature and possibly used only one rack at a time.
The end product was delicious and snapped up by the family though. Definitely worth it if you need one.
