Intel Core i3-12100F CPU $149 + Free Delivery + Surcharge @ Shopping Express

460

Cheapest I'd seen it online. Delivery was $9.90 to Sydney metro but a free shipping discount code FS31032022 was applied giving me free shipping (I ordered a motherboard with it, ymmv)

1% surcharge applies for select payment methods

I believe this is probably the best value CPU available right now but I'm happy to be proven wrong

Edit: also comes with a game via redemption "Redeem Monster Hunter Rise / Street Fighter V by 30/4/2022*"

$129 Asrock H610M if you are looking for a mobo

    • Good value.

Note: This board is full height and does not fit the NR200 case like most h610m boards

      • +2

Also note, don't plan on running anything better than a 12400F on that board, as the VRM will likely overheat and throttle your CPU performance

      • +1

Can just cut to size with grinder

  • +2

holy balls 40% faster than a 10100f, that is some big ipc jump looks like intel getting serious again, tempting to upgrade my haswell lol…..

    FYI

    4 P cores
    0 E cores
    8 threads

Probably not a good buy for a budget gamer

I'd have imagined the non-F chip would be a better buy. That'd give this a home in office PCs and home servers.

      • -1

The $50 difference could get you a gt 1030 or 750ti on the used market which would be a better option imo than the igpu for a general home PC

        • Using up a slot is a huge pain for a home server and 1030's these days are still going close to $130 new (and basically non existent second hand) which is just sad. Onboard is less power usage too. It's only $40 difference as well. Spending more money to get what for most people is the same result for non gaming work is a waste of money. If you're gaming you're better off with a better card, if you're running a server or office PC you're better off with onboard. The 1030 etc is for when you've made a mistake with your CPU decision or using an AMD system and require the pro CPU.

Probably not a good buy for a budget gamer

That's exactly the target audience for this F variant. Granted you have to be on enough of a budget that a 5600x+b550 or 12400f+b660 doesn't make sense, but the 12100f would definitely work well for an ultra budget build with a 6600xt or lower.

      • I feel like you'd be better off with a Ryzen 5500 (6C12T) unless your budget really couldn't stretch those extra dollars.

        • +2

Ryzen 5500 would be decent if you really needed the extra cores/threads for productivity software, but it is definitely a step down for gaming. cost wise the ryzen has cheaper motherboards avaliable, but probably not cheap enough to make up the difference.

Not sure if you mean the 3500x or the 5600x, but either way at this end of the market it's not worth spending more on the cpu when you could put that towards the gpu. Cpu scaling only really becomes an issue further up the market.

Anyway, fewer, faster cores is generally preferable for gaming. The 12100f is faster on average for gaming than the 3600, for example.

If the 3500x/3600 can be had for less than this chip (including motherboard options), it might be a worthwhile option.

          • +1

@snep: Ryzen 5 5500 was released yesterday at around $220AUD, its performance is similar to a 5600g.

          • +2

@snep: 5500 is the new AMD budget chip.

But I think you're correct, the 12100 is better than it anyway.

    • Its a great buy for a budget gamer, performance in games in on par with R9 3900X. nothing else comes close to this level of performance at $150

    • +1

It's actually an amazing buy for a budget gamer. Saving $100 on the CPU put towards a better GPU means you can get a really good gaming experience on a super low budget eg. $600

    • the e cores are interesting as i just use it for office apps but the i5 12500 might be better for me and a b660. seems to be lots of talk about vrm and heatsinks on the 12 gen entry level motherboards.

      • hmm no e cores in I5 ?

  • +3

yeah this is $178 at umart so it is a deal.

just for extra info and maybe useless info to some but this is an LGA 1700 or 12 gen Intel CPU - LGA means Local Grid Array and refers to the pin count on the chip - it also means if buying a mobo u gotta get one that is LGA1700

    • +1

      Land grid array

      • thanku!

  • With a free motherboard, I’d buy

  • With the same heatsink size but so few cores, id imagine the 12100f is pretty much empty under the hood.

  • Do they have an i1? Asking for a friend

    • It's pentium below the 12100, but they are not good value

  • Hmm just bought an i5 11400F with the ebay cashback for around $195 the other day - hopefully the extra $50 I spent is worth it :/

    • +1

If purely for gaming, the 12100f probably beats it.

      • +3

Brutal . Also he paid $200 for a 3 year old cpu.

      • No gaming, the most cpu intensive concerns I have are photo editing, a zillion chrome tabs sometimes killing my machine processing JavaScript, and occasionally runnings some VMs / BlueStacks. But no gaming

        • Well I guess the extra cores are probably worth it. I'd have still gone with current gen, perhaps the 5500 for $220
