Any Way to Get Microsoft Office/Word for Free as Frontline Worker?

Hi all,

My wife works as a nurse and requires Microsoft Word for multiple parts of her job. Her subscription is coming up to renewal and it got me thinking, is there any way she'd be able to get it for free or at least discounted? Thought someone in the Ozbargain community would have some form of idea haha.

https://www.libreoffice.org or https://docs.google.com are free alternatives.

Microsoft don't appear to be that charitable but do offer Frontline Worker discounts: https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/microsoft-365/enterprise/fro…

    • I use both of these semi-regularly, so mini review.

Libreoffice is pretty far from what you might expect when you go into the mindset of using it to replace Office. It's painful to use in basic things like placing images and text together compared to versions of Office from like 20 years ago.

Google Docs is decent as a Word replacement but does have its quirks, and at least used to get really slow in big documents.

Libre office is great. I don't have any problems placing images and text together in writer - and there's much more to the suite than just writer (Word alternative).

I agree that Libreoffice is not a good alternative to Office. I used it for atleast 4 years till 2018 and it was a painful experience.

  • Does the office web version have any limitations?

Maybe you've never used it before, but yes.

Buy a cheap code on net, been working 3 years for $6

Wait, your "wife" pays for software as part of her employment?

Straight to open source software to promote the software then. Boss complains that it's not Microsofty extension? Too bad. They need to pay for it.

There used to be HUP - home user program which used to have Office 2019, but theres only 365 on there atm.

You can sail the seven seas on reddit and get it for free.

    • Dont wanna post it here but PM for deets

Her job really should pay for it, but I hope she's claiming it on her tax at least.

I assume she must be an agency nurse or similar, rather than working in the government / private hospital system.

Should be able to install for free at home, just use the same account as the Office 365 account at work ;)

  • Does OpenOffice still exist?

    • That was gonna be my question. I'd love to know if it's still out there and functional.
Seems like you have to download it through something called Apache now.
Would love to hear someone's review

I think libre office is new version of open office, open office stopped development or something

        • +2

Literally the entire development team on OpenOffice started work on LibreOffice instead because they had disagreements with Oracle (the company that bought out the company that made OpenOffice originally). So for all end-user intents and purposes, LibreOffice supplants OpenOffice completely.

Microsoft Office is still generally better and more feature rich, but as far as free software goes LibreOffice is pretty good.

    • I believe it is still available but Libre Office is now considered the best free alternative to MS Office.

Maybe if you're a paramedic and you save Bill Gates life, he might give you a free copy.

    • I dunno, negotiating over software while giving CPR seems like a conflict of interest.

Use Google Docs so that Google scan all of her work related documents to target advertising at her

  • Comes free with 4th booster

    • Thought 5G gets a little bit faster and stronger signal.

If your wife uses Office365 at work and they have an Office365 business plan, each user should be able to install Office apps on up to five PCs or Macs, five tablets, and five mobile devices.

      This.

Most government departments have enterprise contracts. It used to be called Home Use Program, long as you are employed you can install a copy for cheap.

  • If she needs it for work IMO work should give it to her, or maybe she may be able to access it with her work email?

Typically major companies have an agreement with Microsoft that you can get it cheaper as well, so worth asking your work if something like that exists.

If you only need to use it occasionally there's the online version (or else alternatives)

If either of you have a education account you can also get it that way.

I also bought 2021 version which is a one off payment of $70 bucks on stacksocial (lifetime). Seems to work alright and I'm happy to have a lifetime version to handle.

  • My wife works as a nurse and requires Microsoft Word

The last nurse to post on here was banking $250k per year. Surely you can afford a legit copy of word.

  • If she works for NSW Health I'm pretty sure you have access to most of the office 365 suite through work email. Log in to https://myaccount.microsoft.com/?ref=MeControl, log in using work email details, and then check "subscriptions"

  • Sign up for a free Tafe course, though I doubt she has time.

Otherwise, contact a nearby JB. OW, HN, DM etc, and see if you can at least get the 12 month subscription at a reduced price. Admittedly I could get away with libreoffice or StaOffice, however, the major benefit is Onedrive storage.

  • I had the same requirement recently and just bought a key off the internet for $30 or something. Got it delivered straight away and it worked. I know it's not super legit but it works for me

  • Youtube has plenty of workarounds with questionable authenticity if you want office for free.
Otherwise i don't know if there's any special treatment for Front line workers.

  • Libreoffice

Google docs does the trick for me most of the times. Sheets is pretty exceptional to get the thing done as well.
Best part is that I have google drive and google apps on my phone just incase I need them on the go.

  • Same topic - any ways to get Adobe Acrobat Pro discounted instead of a motza every year?

If she’s WFH either the employer should pay for the software or she can claim it as a tax deduction. I’m also a health worker and have the option to use a work laptop with software provided at home but just use my own. We also have office 365 provided, which I think most large health organisations would have.

  • You can try buying ripped off licenses from website - https://softwareg.com.au/
Just check before you buy but the licenses work for sure.

  • Office365 for front line workers.
    $5.50 per month from Microsoft.

But if you work for somebody else, and you were issued a work email address that uses the Microsoft suite (not Google) everyone else's comments above do apply. And u should be able to get it for free (as long as ur employed by them).
