Are Veggies and Fruits Overrated?

I stopped eating veggies and year-round fruits. Still eating seasonal fruits like Mangoes because I like the taste of these MF. Once I started eating only meat, I stopped getting sick. My sleep quality improved. Constant energy all the time. Maybe my overall health improvement coincided with stopping consuming ultra-processed junk.

What is your experience? Have you done any such experiments?

Edit: 80% of my diet consists of meat and eggs and butter. I am in no way implying fruits and veggies are bad. Just asking are they overrated.

He changed my life for good. From couch potato to training 5 days a week of training in martial arts.

        Good to hear

And changed my perspective on science and how F'd up scientific studies are. Not by Joe Rogan by himself but scientists and achievers who come to his podcast created a new perspective on life.

        Less good to hear.
You know he doesnt bring on a broad or well rounded guest panel right? Its aimed at being the most engaging to the millions of listeners who are within his target demographic
I wouldnt be using Joe Rogan podcast as my 'I am more educated on science because of….' source

@[Deactivated]: Eat vegetables. They are good for you.

            • @Aureus: I clearly mentioned in my description that stopped eating veggies and I feel a lot better now. I used to eat 6 days a week vegetables and fruit everyday. I am not missing anything now and I am perfectly healthy. I mentioned in previous comments that there is no nutrient in vegetable that is not in meat. But people are negging without any reason. You tell me what I am missing. Don’t tell fibre. We are not ruminants to ferment fibre to get energy. Even highly refined cereals use fibre as a healthy tag to sell their product.

              • +3

@[Deactivated]: Fibre is important for gut health, but whatever you can reject that.

If that 20% of non-meat/eggs contains decent amount of fruit then you are probably okay on Vitamin C. There are other vitamins that it is possible to get enough on such a diet, but would require eating a wide range of meat.

IMO you should at least go to your GP and let him know your diet and get him to organise a full blood test to detect vitamin/mineral deficiencies. A standard test won't be helpful.

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: It's not just about the fact that you may find most nutrients in both meat or veg. It's about the quantity of the nutritional components and how digestible they are.

I used to be able to do this in my younger days. The crap simply came out looking pelletized.

Now that I'm older and sitting a lot more (thanks to WFH), I can't do this anymore.
I once skipped veg for just a few days and ended up with a weird constipation. Despite hitting the toilet 2-3 times, some crap remained trapped inside and the gas I passed seriously reeked. I could even hear liquid slushing inside if I moved vigorously. Had to eat shitloads of vegs to clear my bowels.

I do believe there is something to be said for the type of fruit we're seeing in industrialised society today (bred to be high in fructose), however I never understood how people can cut fruit and veg out of their diets completely and function without certain micronutrients e.g. selenium, antioxidants and polyphenols, like what we see with the carnivore diet. The key is to moderate starchy simple carbs such as from bread, rice and pasta - which are essentially empty calories and spike insulin - and ensure adequate macronutrient and micronutrient intake

Average life expectancy is as misleading as a drug advertisement, infant mortality was a great factor then. If you know about your family history. Just go back a few generations and see how long they lived and what was the cause of their death. When I was a kid, I never heard about cancer or heart attack. Now they are common diseases.

You can disregard millions of dollars of non-biased research funding all you want, but at the end of the day ignorance only gets you so far.

                • @Drakesy: You cannot be keto if you consume milk. Milk is a high carb product, unless you refer to diluted almond milk.

            • @Drakesy: Eh, Mi Goreng has fibre from the noodles themselves, not a lot but it's there. Mi Goreng isn't really that bad for you, no worse than making your own wheat flour noodles and putting some sweet soy, garlic+onion powder and msg on it, drop of sriracha. By the time you add an egg or two and some bok choy there are a lot worse things to eat.

The big problem with Mi Goreng isn't health related but the palm oil they use is a culprit of major deforestation.

Just wanted to pop in because Mi Goreng (basically noodles) a carb heavy food definitely isn't keto at all. It's about as far the other direction as you can get.

There's a building consensus around this sort of diet, often pitched as the 'Lion' or 'Carnivore' diet. I haven't tried it myself but a few friends had and they had nothing but good things to report. Consistent themes were less cravings, more consistent energy and weight loss. If it works for you then stick at it. Have your regular health check ups to make sure your body is getting what it needs but we're all very unique. Anyone saying one particular type of diet is bad/good for everyone is just lying to you.

I do think fruit and vegetables are overrated, but that also doesn't mean you can just skip vegetables and fruit altogether. You've phrased the post in a way that suggests excluding fruit and vegetables is actually better for your health overall which can't be further from the truth. IMO most of the population's issue is with overeating than any specific food or getting a specific nutrient. That said, long term, going cold turkey on fruit and vegetables can't be good. Eventually there will be some issue down the track such as lack of Vitamin C/iron deficiency etc.

The benefits you got can be dependent on so many factors as well, glucose rise/subsequent insulin spike causing better sleep for example.

When you start to sell a product and do a big marketing campaign. It will stick in people mind. It will take a lot of undoing and years to reverse. It took a 25 years to finally realise smoking is dangerous because doctors advertised it as a heal for asthma. Just google it.
