Return to Monkey Island Thread

I don’t know whether majority of people are too young to have heard of the Monkey Island franchise, but I grew up watching my older cousin play this game in the 1990s. It really brings out a lot of good memories when life was a lot more simpler and we had fewer things to worry about.

An official trailer just came out for the latest game that will be released this year.

Curious to know how many people here have played any of the Monkey Island games? I’m assuming you’d be in your late 20s to mid 40s if you have?

There are no words for how disgusting you are.

Yes, there are. You just never learned them.

I've heard you are a contemptible sneak.

Then perhaps you should switch to decaffeinated?

sword fight pushes in pirates favour

Yeah loved the games when I was younger. Only played a couple of them though and can't really remember which ones.

Loved the insults when fighting the pirates.

You fight like a dairy Farmer!…How appropriate. You fight like a cow!

Also can we just trade this new game for a remaster of curse of monkey island :(

      • I loved Curse of Monkey Island. I actually enjoyed Escape from Monkey Island as well, despite the clunky (non point-and-click system).

I do agree when I first saw the trailer, the animation seemed a bit ‘off’ as I was so used to the beautiful and quirky background art at the time. But I was too excited to really either way.

Oh? Is that your face? I thought it was your backside!

Played all and loved most - 36 years old.

This is made by the original creator, who did one and two and is will be designed as a "true" sequel to 2. Interesting that Murray (with the original voice) is in the trailer when he only came in in game 3 (after Ron Gilbert had left LucasArts).

To be fair - Murray voice artist was A+++++

'Murray: You may call me ‘Murray’! I am a powerful demonic force! I am the harbinger of your doom! And the forces of darkness will applaud me as I stride through the Gates of Hell – carrying your head on a pike!

      Guybrush: “Stride”?

Murray: All right then, roll! Roll through the Gates of Hell! … must you take the fun out of everything?'

  • I'm 38, played the first 4 (I think). The last one I tried was the first 3d one and it didn't really click with me.

But that said, most of the traditional point/click adventure games are a little slow for me now anyway. Newer / more action orientated games tend to reward you in some way for minimal time investment, whereas the trad adventure games can leave you stuck and clicking everything on everything before giving up and looking up a walkthrough.

  • i was too busy getting laid on LSL3

  • I can't choose two options!

The Monkey Island franchise was such a huge part of my childhood lol

Personally loved Curse, I finished it so many times I actually try to beat my own PB speed runs

I remember playing one many years back in iOS. It's the first and only one I ever played and I loved it. Unfortunately the games have never been avaliable on console so I haven't played them since.

Thimbleweed Park is a very faithful successor.

  • Back when I was young, I had this game but never played it because I was 5 or 6 at the time, and this game wasn't in Chinese.

At the same time, most of the westwood games have Chinese translation, Because of that, the <The Legend of Kyrandia> was much more favourable among kids who has a PC back then in China. Also the original <Dune> was just incredible, that's like the only game we play.

Personally I tried to play Monkey Island, but I just can't overcome the English barrier.
My mom taught me how to use a English dictionary and I tried my best but still didn't get what the game was about.
The first English game I ever finished was <twinsen's odyssey> (little big adventure), when I was 9 years old.

By the mid 90s, this kind of adventure game starts to die out along side with old school RPG. (Might and magic, Wizzardry etc), there was RTS and RTS only, everyone is playing RTS, warcraft, C&C.

Then we start to have this new thing called internet in China, then there's ulitma online.
When <Diablo> came out it wasn't popular. Because it doesn't run in DOS nor windos 3.1.

You have to have Windows 95.
For the rich kids who has a PC that can run Windows 95, they all play diablo.
others like myself, we still go RTS all day. play lan games in the early stage of "internet cafe".

Late 90s there was some awesome Chinese RTS, and there was one RTS I really liked, called "KKnD", it's an Aussie game. Which is fantastic, but then there was starcraft.
And Bullfrog, and many good stuff…
But then there was FPS, and then there was Counter strike, and then it was just FPS for everything…

all the way fast forward to 2014.
<Escape from monkey island> was the first Chinese tranlated game from that series.
I bought and played it, and then went on played entire series.
fell in love with DOS box. replayed original <Dune>, <Jagged Alliance 1>
and many good old games that I can't figure out the meaning when I was younger.
Such as <I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream>, few old windows games like <Torment> and Quantic Dreams (and David Bowie)'s <Omikron The Nomad Soul>

After all those old games, I think if you can get over the graphics part, a lot of the old games are much better made compare to today's ones.
