The difference between White and White Ambiance for anyone else's interest.

    DC

    • +1

seems hue white ambience would be the best to go with.

    • +7

      White = 2700K only
White Ambience = Bi-colour tungsten to daylight adjustment (2700K-5600K)

      Saved you a click.

    • -1

Bit misleading there - our eyes can handle colour temp differences very well, while a photograph from a digital camera is exceedingly bad at coping with the situation in that article. That photo is a terrible example.

Frankly at a 50-60% price premium for ambience per the article it is completely not worth it.

Our eyes will see negligible difference from warm white to exterior lighting differences… Cool (blue) white on the other hand - like a fluorescent light, is a whole other problem.

      YMMV

      • +5

Until you have used the white ambiance, you'll never realise just how much better it is over the standard.

      • +4

I don't know about the theory but to me 2700K is way too dull/yellow (even for the bedroom), and the ambience bulbs are 100% the way to go, at least for larger rooms.

Everyone has their own preferences though so…grain of salt.

    • LOL just googled this should have scrolled down …

  • I don't have hub. Can the light be turned on/off by talking to echo dots?

    • +1

Yes. You can pair it with your phone by Bluetooth, and control from Alexa/google/siri.

But that's just a way to encourage people to buy their first bulb. You'll really want a hub, and more bulbs :-)

If you really just want one bulb with voice control, a wifi bulb makes more sense.

      • If you really just want one bulb with voice control, a wifi bulb makes more sense.

Based on my experience with (many) LIFX bulbs, I disagree - I'd pick BT over wifi any day, unless the home is large enough for range to be an issue.

For mine, wifi bulbs are just not reliable enough (LIFX bulbs, anyway).

        • LIFX used to be instant and very reliable, then they redid the app a few years ago. Until then, they were fantastic.

I'm hoping other brands haven't broken their products as much as lifx did.

          • @NobalaKoba: It infuriated the family no end, which was a pity because the hardware is great, going up to 1100 lumens even on bulbs with fully adjustable lighting.

Basically you'd turn a light on or off from the app, or voice control….and then hold your breath a few seconds, ready to repeat the command.

With my Hue setup now, they just work 99% of the time, no performance anxiety. Just wish they went a bit brighter sometimes.

        • Based on my experience with (many) LIFX bulbs, I disagree - I'd pick BT over wifi any day

I said "just want one bulb". For many, Zigbee is the way to go. (Not BT, but maybe in the future)

          • @bargaino: one bulb, many bulbs….it doesn't matter. For me, wifi-only bulbs are to be avoided.

I was just commenting on my LIFX wifi bulbs vs Philips BT bulbs.

Zigbee is a whole different story.

    • I don't think so. The lights can be controlled by zigbee (with a hub) or bluetooth (direct from your phone).

Although the echo dot has bluetooth, I think it would be unlikely it has the software to control a hue light.

  • Ty, grabbed 3

    • All sold out. Shame, some awesome prices

  • I believe these are the previous gen and are being cleared out to make way for the new. Only matters if you want the brightest possible light.

    • I think these are the 4th gen, they have Bluetooth. Is there a 5th gen now?

      • +3

I haven't bothered trying to count the number of generations but AFAIK the latest ones have 1100 (I assume indicate lumens despite the fact the actual spec is something like 1050) marked on both the box and bulb itself. The previous ones were ~800 lumens. The 1100 ones were released Q4 2021 but I believe are just starting to appear in Aust.

        • +2

I'm waiting for them to announce Ambience 1100 lumen bulbs :)

          • +1

@andresampras: They already announced 1600 white ambience and 1100 colour ambience at the same time Q4 last year.

            • @apsilon: Fantastic, can't wait to buy some….in 2025, when they're available here haha

              • +2

@andresampras: They'll be here soon I think. It's why there's been so many sales on Hue bulbs recently, they're clearing stock of the previous models.

              • @andresampras: Amazon tells me if I order one today it will be delivered by Saturday…https://www.amazon.com.au/Philips-Hue-Ambiance-Brightness-Fitting/dp/B09T459ZB2?th=1. I actually ordered one from Amazon UK before they were available here and it arrived within a week. I have had it for several months now…

                • @pierrejb: Do you recommend them? have you compared against an 800 lumens Hue bulb?

I'm wondering if the 2-pack of ambiance, at $73, is better value than a single 1600lm ambiance at $69

                  • @andresampras: Depends on the room you want to use these in. The rest of mine are 800lm and there is a noticeable difference in the brightness between the 800lm and the 1600lm in a larger room. I got the 1600lm to light up a large open plan living area because there was only one light fitting and the 800lm was not bright enough. It works well in that sort of setting. If you have a room with multiple light fittings you might be better off getting a couple of 800lm or 1100lm bulbs?

                    • @pierrejb: Thanks.

Yeah I currently have a couple of 800lm in the lounge room, which is almost bright enough but feels a bit lacking.

I've ordered the 2-pack of 1100, hopefully that's good enough, considering the 1600s are currently double the price :)

  • +1

I use the ambiance modes too often to go White only, but if you only want dimmable this is a great price.

If you’re just starting with smart bulbs, I’d recommend White Ambiance though.

  • How many lumens are these?

    • +1

      800.

  • The woolworths e27/b22 9w mriabella $9.5/$4.5 deal is still on. :)

    • Not ZigBee. Can't compare.

      • i've both, ZigBee+hub need more initial investment $ than ESP32+wifi :)

        • Yep true. I wonder why I keep investing in zigbee but primarily to use bulbs as routers/extenders for my battery ZigBee devices. If I didn't have those then Tuya all the way at a fraction of the cost

    • +2

Different category of smart light bulb though

    • +1

      Not ZigBee. Can't compare.
Kogan has cheap Tuya bulbs for about $24 for 4

  • price jacked up

  • -1

    Yep, too late.

  • Thanks, snagged 2. Can't ever have too many, especially for a Queenslander with retro bayonets all around!

    • just FYI you can get bayonet-to-edison (and vice versa) converters on amazon etc.

I use one for my entry light, has worked without issue for many years now

      • +1

yep i got a pack of those! prefer the official bayonets though, might be safer and in some lights the adapters make the bulb stick out too much

    • Not that there is a standard, but bayonets are the most common throughout the whole country.

      • Unless you have IKEA light fittings or light fittings designed for the US which are predominantly Edison screw

      • Is that still the case with new builds? I see a lot more E27 fittings and bulbs available now than even 10 years ago. Someone must be buying them.

        • Dunno. I'll never be able to afford a house, let alone a new one so I can't tell you.

  • how is this any better than 'smart bulbs' with wifi from other brands?

    • +1

ZigBee is not cloud based and can run fully offline without internet

      • +1

        Doesn't pollute wifi also

        • But is susceptible to wifi and other microwave pollution

      • you can blind ESP32+wifi to your home-server too…

  • Ta. Just put in a hub and two lights this week for the kids room, now I've covered the whole house for under $100.

  • They are back in stock
