Jetstar Incorrectly Overcharged for Checked Luggage.

Jetstar overcharged me for luggage.

Basically I weighed my stuff at home 20.2kg (I had paid for 20kg). Went to the airport and they weighed it as 3kg over (so 23kg) and I got stung with a $75 over weight fee. When I landed in Bali I weighed my luggage again 20.2kg.

Their scales are/were incorrectly calibrated. I had just assumed my home scales were wrong/broken. In hindsight I should have disputed harder at the airport (I did dispute it, but the check in person said the Jetstar scales were correct.)

I wrote a whole long thing to Jetstar and in the end I got nothing back, not an apology nor my money.

Basically I got stung $75 by Jetstar totally unfairly and they will not admit fault and/or make me whole again. Makes sense from a business perspective I guess.

So in summary be careful when you check in and weigh your luggage, if you feel like their scales are wrong, ask to re-weigh on another set of scales. Learn from my mistake.

Thank you, and (Profanity) you Jetstar and Jetstar check-in Lady.

  • Hi,

    So you were over 20kg?

They probably charge in bands over 20kg…

  • do you have calibration details of both sets of scales?

    • I weighed at home and once I landed in Bali; both 20.2kg.

After I had paid the overluggage fee at the second Jetstar counter, I went back to the first counter where my two bags were originally weighed and noticed that with nothing on the scales the Jetstar scales showed 1.3kg. I told the lady this and she said her scales were correctly calibrated; i was stressed and wanted to get on the plane so I didn't really argue (assuming my home scales were incorrect).

      • And basically that's where they will get nearly everyone. They just want to get on the plane, and can't be effed!!!!

        Scumbags!!!

also why didnt you take items out and wear an extra layer, 0.3 kg is literally a pair of pants or two t shirts

    • It was a stressful time, they didnt accept my first travel insurance so I had to pay for another one on my phone on the spot. I had to prove pcr tests and all that. People were waiting behind me. And I was worried I wouldn't get on the flight. Paying was the simpler option at the time. Also I assumed Jetstar scales were correct and mine at home were incorrect. Also I was overcharged for 3kg (3x$25)

      • Should have just missed the flight because of their stupidity of not accepting your insurance then claimed on that insurance.

also did you take photo of the bag on the jetstar scales?

No, so many could have, should have, would haves.

It's done now, don't let it ruin your travels over $75.

Who needs 20kg worth in Bali? Shorts and tshirt, or buy a Bintang singlet…!

    • I'm in Bali for two months and am thinking about doing more travel after (before coming back to Australia)

    Thanks for ranting with us.

    Thanks and noted.

Bro. Taking 20kg on a flight. Always get more. At least 2 kg more.

Any case you were 200 grams over

I saw a video where the flight attendant was putting their foot on the scale

You should have put the "important" stuff in a boogie board.

    • The surf life "guard" would have saved the day and got it before it got off the conveyer belt.

The scales at the check-in are accurately calibrated and checked on a very regular basis.

The scales at your home and Balinese hotel room are not.

    It was a stressful time

Maybe international travel is not for you then

      Harsh but true words.

You pay Jetstar prices, expect jetstar service.

But seriously, 20kg of luggage to Bali? A bit rough if the scales are actually out. Turning up to the airport with a bag that knowingly is ALREADY OVERWEIGHT is not a smart idea.

And with the amount of press international flights are getting it's been pretty well promoted that COVID coverage on insurance is often non included in most policies.

When I landed in Bali I weighed my luggage again 20.2kg.

Gravity is less near the equator, so things weigh less…

  • When you say "I wrote a whole long thing to Jetstar", was this an email or a snail mail letter or a complaint via the web site or feeback via the web site or something else?

Did you get a response from Jetstar? If you did then what did it say?

  • Report the inaccurate scale to the National Measurement Institute

I may have to hand in my ozbargain membership card over this one… But here it goes:

    • You admitted the bag was overweight (by how much is not really relevant).

    • The $75 is gone, and by the sounds of your experience with jetstar thus far in arguing it, you're not getting it back.

    • It sounds like you were very stressed throughout your travel to Bali.

So how about you forget about it and enjoy yourself in Bali 🙂

Whats it like in Bali now? Has it changed much in the past couple of years?

No doubt still the destination of choice for most Australians who like that sort of shithole because things are cheap.

      • Bali is a great destination in general. Kuta (in Bali) is a shithole which has been created by bogan tourists.

Why would you pack exactly 20kg to go on holidays in ur suitcase? Off course u shouldn’t get your money back on a low cost carrier…take accountability of ur poor planning! Plus how do u intend to come back from ur holiday with exactly 20kg ?! Why do people who use low cost carriers feel they are entitled to the same privileges as full service carriers? You get wat u paid for!

I have health issues and my nebuliser, oxygen equipment, meds,… always weigh tons! Sure you can get smaller lighter travel units but who can afford that on DSP. So as a 'poor pensioner' I pay my Qantas Club membership and save probably $100 on snacks on each trip (diabetes and other nutritional issues make it crucial I eat and the last thing I want to do is carry more!), I get to be in a relative crowd-free environment (I am immunocompromised), get preferential treatment, EXTRA luggage allowance. I also have great use for my frequent flyer points which I collect using my credit card (and churning) so rarely pay much for the flights I need (TAS-ACT is 8000pts). And with the credit card, I get free interstate/int. travel cover, something else that is hard to get with existing medical conditions! And on my last trip to Finland (to avoid open border Covid shock) I carried 50kg of luggage for free!

Brag over…. but yes, I am lucky my little town is serviced by Qantas Link and that I can live a privileged life despite some major issues.

Oh, the one time I had to fly Virgin one Xmas when no freq. flyer seats were available on Qantas, I was told I had too much cabin luggage, too much checked-in luggage and the painting I was carrying was too big to take full stop. It took some juggling to get that through. Then I had the gross and expensive airport grub, the crowds, and then the flight was delayed plus Virgin doesn't fly to my home I had to fly to a larger airport requiring a friend to drive 2 hours return and she had to wait 2 hours for my delayed flight. So, that was an eye-opener for me. As expensive as Qantas Club seems to be, and as much as it ties you to Qantas, and I do have a love/hate relationship with them, it still works out best even on a pension!

When flying these days, I carry two sets of travel scales. They don't take up much room but it gives you room to argue if the scales seem off at the airport.
