Yakitate is my personal favourite. The puns got so ridiculous but they were also pretty darn hilarious esp in the early eps.

Saw it. Very nice indeed. Good memories coming back, even if slightly different.

Have the 2099 edition, still to watch

    • Star Blazers right? LoL - just being sarcastic.

      • +1

Star Blazers indeed, or better "I guerrieri delle stelle" ;-)

  • +1

Death Note, Dragon Ball, DBZ, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in a Shell. Akira

    Modern: Attack on Titan

I don't watch much anime. If I do watch it, its generally the mainstream stuff that hooks you early.

    • I still havent watched akira 😬😬

      • +2

        😶

Nor sure how it may have held up, but it was brilliant all those years ago. Ninja Scroll was great too

      Robotech 1984

      • this is where I'm livin' ^
      • Simpler times. Those shows are a distant memory now, I just know I loved them as a kid

      • I saw 2/3 ah I loved the old stuff..

not anime but that dinosaur mech cartoon show was so freaking awesome I always wondered why my family didn't have more of that one.. loved it

        also ultra man

    • +1

      Nice list.
Really like Dr Stone. Can't wait for new season.

    • +2

      Robotech 1984

I remembered watching SDF Macross on TV when I was in primary school. Memorable show.

    • +1

Nice list, I don't watch much anymore - but has a few odd ones in there that I enjoyed and not well know so will check some of these out!

  • Problem is, many are good in the beginning then becoming bad after hunderds episodes

    • or just get discontinued

  • +1

I mostly watch Shounen, so my favourites are:

Old: DBZ, Hunter x Hunter, Naruto, Initial D, Great Teacher Onizuka
New: Haikyuu!!, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, Tokyo Revengers

    • solid shounen list.

Surprised you don't have my hero academia on the list. Was quite liking it until the most recent season.

      • MHA is up there for me, along with One Punch Man and Mob Psycho 100, but wanted to limit my favourites to around 4 each.

I enjoy the occasional Isekai too. I really liked That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime.

        • lol… I've been reading nearly nothing but isekai these days…..

  • 2000s: GetBackers!, Samurai Champloo, Gantz
    2010s: Shingeki no Kyojin

    • Hadn't heard of getBackers. Sounds interesting

  • +1

    2000s: 5 CM per second
    2010s: Kimi No Na Wa

    • Love kimi no na wa. May have watched it a few times when it was showing in the movies!!

      • +1

Check out 5 cm per second, same director/writer/producer and one of his earlier successes. But a bit too emo/melancholic

        • +1

Yeah I've watched most of Shinkai's films.
Prior to yourname I always liked the animation style but the stories were bit to emo and lacking imo.
Yourname had a decent story, with gorgeous animation and also amazing radwimps soundtrack!

Did you like weathering with you? (Story is very similar to yourname. Kinda feels like a attempt to cash in on your name success)

          • +1

@gimli: Haven't actually watched that one yet, and haven't heard great things, but supposedly "ok" to watch.

            • +1

@animasoIa: still a great movie. But just not very original/novel after yourname.

If you like Shinkai movies I think you would still like it.

  • Old: Berserk (sad that the author died), Naruto, Deathnote, Fate Zero (didn't like any of the other Fates), Hunter X Hunter, FMA

New: AoT, Vinland Saga, Demon Slayer (slightly overrated but still good)

    • cant wait for new Vinland season

  • Would recommend Re:zero starting life in another world (one of the best isekai), konosuba (top comedy), berserk, grisaia no kajitsu (really left an impression on me), fate zero, fate stay night ubw

There’s a lot more that are memorable but I can’t remember the titles

    • have watched re:zero. (got mixed feelings about it but keen for next season haha)
Wasn't a fan of konosuba (comedy didn't make me laugh enough)
might add grisaia no kajitsu to my list!

      • Yeah grisaia no kajitsu is a must watch. Also drifters, drifters OVAs (same studio that blessed us with hellsing ultimate), kara no kyokai the garden of sinners and nurarihyon no mago sennen makyou

  • +2

    Jin Roh
    Star Blazers
    Robotech
    Science Ninja Team Gatchaman

    • +1

      And there it is!

      My era.

Of course when I first saw gatchaman it was Battle of the Planets (didn't know better at the time I was like 11 don't judge).

      • +1

4.00pm Battle of the Planets was the business.

        and then:
        4.30pm Star Blazers
        5.00pm Monkey
        6.00pm The Goodies
        6.30pm Dr. Who

        • +1

          That's the one.

          Come home from school.
Make a glass of milo (don't stir too much you want the crusty bits up the top)
In front of the telly watch the above shows.
          Forget about homework.

Brother from another mother blitz. When ABC was da bomb after school.

          • +1

@Ramrunner: Ha ha, I could have written exactly that! ;) ;)

  • Hm, it took me a hot minute to recall, but:
    Sket Dance
    Bungo Stray Dogs
    Toradora
    Skyland (if that counts)
    And off course, anything Ghibli

    • I used to watch skyland on abc kids. Completely forgot about it. Was pretty interesting but never watched the whole thing. Might check it out again.

On that note avatar the last airbender was awesome. (Did you watch that too?)

      • Absolutely love ATLA + Korra (also super excited about the new content coming out of Avatar Studios). Would also rate TMNT 2003 highly as well. Doesn't get as much love as ATLA but was from the same era and was great in my opinion.

  • Rurouni Kenshin - The Kyoto Arc was incredible.

    • haven't watched it. How does it compare to the older OVAs?

      • The main series is less depressing than the older OVAs. Just watch the anime until the end of the Kyoto Arc and then read the Jinchu arc in the manga to finish it up.

The Kyoto Arc is literally one of the best arcs in anime.

Very surprised no on else here has recommended the series yet??

        • I've watched the OVAs and about half the series.
Agree main series (esp the start) and OVAs are very different in terms of mood.

      • This scene should interest you.
        Top 5 anime entrances
        https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9Gkg9cto81o

        • Yep, still got the Madman DVD for that episode back from 2003.

  • Apart from eva, I dunno any specific favs but a few titles I like are:
The lupin III tv series and movies….
Full metal panic (read all the novels too)
Evangelion (My room is full of this)
Zero no tsukaima (Still have yet to read the whole series tho)
High school DXD (Tho I prefer the novels for storyline than the 'plot' heavy show)
Black lagoon (Seriously great English dub!)

  • Some favs I haven't seen mentioned yet:

    Hajime no Ippo
    Monogatari
    Slam Dunk
    Azumanga Daioh
    Suzumiya Haruhi
    Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
    JoJo
    Code Geass
    Beck
    Trigun
    Tenjo Tenge
    Golden Boy
    Kimi ni Todoke

  • Hotoku no Ken
    Cobra
    Gundam 00

  • Interesting - Lots of suggestions here to follow up on but a few I haven't seen mentioned…
    Melody of Oblivion
    Mezzo DSA
Airmaster (dealing with success, one street fight at a time!)
Gokusen (I've only seen the anime series, not sure how it worked as manga or live action series)

  • Death Note or Dragon Ball Z

    • tried to get into dragon ball Z when it was on tv here but it was so drawn out, even as a kid I felt my time was being shorted.

  • Kum-Kum (the cave boy)
    Speed Racer
    Macross

  • Some of my favs : AKIRA, Berserk, Gurren Lagann, Ergo Proxy, Trigun, Paranoia Agent, Golden Kamuy, Kill La Kill, Samurai Champloo, Psycho Pass (S1) & Castlevania (Not 'anime' but idc it's great)
Some of my fav slice of life/dramas : Barakamon, Flying Witch, A Silent Voice, Tanaka-Kun, Kono Oto Tomare, Baby Steps, Kokoro Connect, 3 gatsu no lion, Fruits Basket, Your Name & My Roommate is a Cat

  • Samurai Champloo (because Seba Jun Rest in beats)
Full Metal Alchemist (still probably the most emotional show I have watched.. really got me hooked me in if anyone has any similar style anime's to this I am all ears.. alphonse :( )

  • I've started collecting a lot of these sorts of things on hard copies, and also digital. Also some of the better quality toys and associated products.
    Have macross/Robotech.
    Voltron(lions) and Legendary defender.
    Transformers
NGE. This is one I actively go back to, being on Netflix makes it more accessible and can flick it on late at night.
Haven't really got into some of the new stuff. Watched some cowboy bebop, one piece and Pokemon with my youngest but don't have the time or enjoyment to keep going.
