Does Dell Allow You to Extend Your Warranty after Purchasing a Laptop?

Hi all, I'm looking at buying the new Alder Lake Inspiron 13, but the cheapest warranty extension option at the moment is $165. The thought of buying the laptop alone already pains me, and adding another $165 would literally kill me.

I've just found out that Dell charges $200 to repair a keyboard on a relatively cheap Inspiron so I am a little cautious now when it comes to laptop failures.

Can the warranty be extended later into the year, and will it still be the price it is now (or less)?

As long as its currently under warranty, you can extend warranty whenever you want.

I had a notebook that i extended multiple times to end up at 7 years warranty. was 12 months +3 years +3years

  • Extended warranty is pretty much a scam most of the time.

Normally i'd agree but the dell warranty service really is pretty amazing.

They'll send someone to your house next business day and replace whatever needs to be replaced.

    • it's a Yank report!!!!

      • Doesn't make it any less of a scam here in Vegemite-land, chief.

(which references that same Consumer Reports article I linked, anyway).

In fact extended warranty is arguably even more worthless here because (at least in theory) we've got coverage under the Australian Consumer Law. In practice companies will make sorting out most ACL nonsense too much of a pain for most of us to bother, but we still have it.

    • Within that 7 years warranty, they replaced my motherboard 2 times, the video card died 2 times, and keyboard needed replacing, a new ssd x2 which was in raid, and a couple of other smaller things.

Ended up saving me over 5k in repairs. When it comes to dell notebooks, i don't think its a scam, cause there will be failures, its just a matter of time.

      • You didn't have an Alienware laptop just wondering 🤔

    • Extended warranty with Dell is about speed of service rather than the presence of service

adding another $165 would literally kill me

If you can't find $165, what are you doing buying a brand new $1400+ computer?

I can afford it. It just hurts. The thought of spending more than $1500 on a laptop makes my bones chill.

I hear you. I've never personally spent that much on a computer either!

FWIW I agree with whatwasherproblem. Don't do the extended warranty.
