Tradesmen Recommendation Forum/Section?

I was just looking to post asking for suggestions for plumbers and electricians in the forum but honestly not sure what section to post in and this gave me the thought of having a dedicated "deal" type section for tradesmen recommendations, or at least maybe a separate forum category?
I don't know it's late and I'm rambling.

Abvertising for tradies on ozbargain?… no thanks.

  • You can post request for recommendation in the Home & Garden forum. However trade person advertising their own offers might be considered as spams.

I think OP is suggesting a recommendation/review mega-thread kind of thing, but as a forum category?

The problem with the country is you got stuff like HiPages which basically directs you to their own list (usually people who are willing to pay the fee because they are desperate for work)

In the UK there is mybuilder which will send you to their own list but you can also invite just as many from your local area to look at your job. There is also plenty of reviews.

Read this ABC News article about hard to find a tradie

Problem with government pumping and priming the property industry is you end up with higher prices and skill of the people come down. It is a problem when people with lack of skills bid for jobs and getting them (then the owners pay multiple times).

Reminds me of being on a building site once negotiating work for trades people. First they question they asked is "can you do what you are talking about?" Because you get people who used to turn up saying they can do everything but it turns out they can't do anything. They learnt the hard way that nobody can do everything well.

  • I've had some bad experiences with people I find on the internet so now I check my local newspaper.
So much better now. I also keep the contacts of people who have done good work for me. So hard to find high spec tradies when the quality of some are so so low.

  • Can't beat WOM. Before selecting a tradie I ask friends and family members for their experiences.

It doesn't always guarantee a decent job but it puts the odds in my favour a lot more.

Good tradies don't advertise. They get plenty of work through word of mouth.
