If it's a range extender don't bother, you're better off investing in a cheap real mesh setup.

Range extenders "strengthen" your signal but cut your speeds down quite a lot when connected to that node.

Some say they work wonders. I gather you're not a fan?

I'm not ready to invest hundreds of dollars to fix the issue. I'll try the $49 solution first.

If that's all you can get they're better than nothing.

I used to have 4 setup around the house and they frustrated the hell out of me. Really bad throughput and constantly dropping out. I didn't have cheap ones either.

Since installing a mesh setup I have had absolutely no issues with speeds or signal. I picked up a 4 pack for under $100 and I'm only using two of the nodes currently 🙂 haven't needed to add the others.

Just my experience, hope it's a help.

        • Very helpful, cheers.

        • +1

+1 for mesh. Picked up a couple of TP-Link Deco M4 on special a while ago for a black spot, works flawlessly. Much better than messing around with range extenders.

        • Which Mesh solution did u go with?

          • @Kammi: I have one if the Tenda Nova systems.

They're always having decent sales somewhere.

I actually found them on OzBargain.

            • @XXRydeR: Which version do you have? I want to get one for my parents. ty

              • @jaydee4: I have the MW6 at home and installed the MW3 at my in-laws place. Haven't noticed much difference between the two setups.

            • @XXRydeR: Thanks!

I'm trying decide between the tenda mw-6 (~$144) or or the google nest wifi (waiting for $300 'sale').

        • Where to buy your mesh system?

      • +2

This is double the price via Amazon but its a Mesh system with 3 nodes:

        • My house only have one phone socket (FTTN) in the main bedroom. Can I use it? How can I connect them? Thanks.

          • +1

@TomDamon: They connect to each other via wifi.
You use one as your router and as long as one of the other two are in wifi range of the router they carry the signal.

          • @TomDamon: You would use 1 of the nodes as your main unit and connect it to your current modem/router via ethernet cable and set it up in "Bridge Mode". It's quite easy on the Tenda app. You can then place the other nodes around the house and set them up very easily over the app (you can connect via a cable or wifi for the other 2 nodes). Lastly, connect to your modem and disable the wifi (the one connected via the phone line, not the mesh node). Hope that helps.

Well, range extenders literally need to repeat all they send and receive, which quite literally doubles ping times, and halves speed.

The truly cheap way, is to get a powerline ethernet adaptor (EoP), and grab literally any 'free' wifi router off gumtree.

Mesh is usually OK, because they usually 'mesh' on a different frequency, but there's often still latency penalties.

Simply having a "DownstairsWiFi" setup, means you suffer no losses, and perhaps not for you, but for others, it can mean things like 2 different DNS solutions for kids vs adults and other useful features like that.

      • People in the know are generally not fans. They do NOT work wonders.

They MAY get you a signal where you didn't before, I will concede that for sure, but at the expense of slowing everything down and basically creating a wireless mess.

There are just far better solutions is all.

I know people keep posting these but I personally don't think they're bargains at any price. The best is always wired. Then if you need wireless, add an access point to the end of the wire. Ethernet over power can also be a good option if your power lines are on the same circuit and good quality (some have access points built in). Mesh can certainly be a great option if you're totally anti-wire.

After 25 years of runing an IT business (and yes we do source extenders for customers if they want them), we always try and steer people away. The amount of returns and frustrated calls just isn't worth it. The cure can be worse than the symptoms.

Here is a review of this model.
    https://techprojournal.com/tp-link-one-mesh-review/

It uses TPLink one mesh system which alleviates the issues some people have with range extenders.
From personal experience I have a similar model and it was plug and play and has been faultless in performance and stability.

    • Which model do you have exactly? Thanks :)

      • I have the ac750, it's an older model but they updated the firmware to make it one mesh compatible.
I posted a link to the Amazon product site but my post was blocked as a referral?
Any of these one mesh extenders will work well if you have a compatible modem/ router. Very simple setup.

+1 for mesh. Do it once. Do it properly.

Everyone who has had a wifi blackhole has gone down the range extender path because it's cheaper. You'll soon find out that it just isn't good, perhaps it's the range, the speed, the transfer of devices between nodes or maybe all three. It'll annoy you so much that you'll then end up buying mesh in the end. Just skip the second step and buy a decent cheap mesh setup. The several hundred dollar hit is absolutely worth having large and uninterrupted wifi coverage all over your home. Take it from personal experience.

    • +2

This was me. Speed was ok but constant drop outs when downloading large files or playing games which would annoy me like crazy. Setup a mesh system and it has been perfect and coverage all over the house has been amazing even in the garden now.

    • +1

Not me I got one of these TPLink extenders off gumtree thinking it was cheap enough to try and toss if no good, by luck I had a TPLink router that has their one mesh system, not a true mesh system but this worked well.
My devices all use the same password and I don't notice any change of network as it is the same network, it's like the original wifi extended basically which is how they are supposed to work 😊

    • -1

It's called backhaul, not blackhole :)

  • +2

don't bother with extenders, you'll be frustrated by it sooner or later.

  • I used an internet over power set up for my sisters house. It was dual band wifi at the power point end, and electrical power line back to the router. Theres wa sno mesh at the time… is mesh better than using the electrical grid of the house?

  • +1

I use one of these to extend wifi upstairs to all the smart devices; blind motor, air purifier, scales, lights, etc. Phones also connect to it when laying in bed.
Must say I notice the speed drop on the phone, but all the other smart devices wouldn't work without it… so $49 well spent in my book.
