Eating Cold Seafood Seems Not Right

Bugs, crays, prawns, mussels, etc. Everytime I see people eat them cold, I can't imagine why. You're hungry, eat a hot meal people! Eat a freshly grilled/ boiled/ fried/ baked/ blanched/ air-fried seafood. I'm pretty sure even Innuits eat only freshly cooked seafood.

Then don't eat it? Problem solvered.

    • +30

But that won't validate OP's sterile and monoculture view of the world.

      • +5

Monoculture? Come on, apparently some of OPs best friends are "Innuits"

        • But what about the other tribes of eskimos?

          • @Brian McGee: Given that the word was an insult meaning "fish eaters", it would seem the O.P. is currently asking them:-p

        • "Innuit" ?

Ben Dover - and innuendo !

    • +2

This is why we should stop inbreeding.

Trans in sports , WFH, and now cold seafood

You sure seem to struggle with a wide range of social issues.

Trans playing sports from home and eating cold seafood…disgusting

  • +20

    what about sushi or sashimi

    • +11

Should be room temperature! OP's head just exploded.

    • +12

You mean I wasn't supposed to take the sashimi home and cook it?! /s

      • +5

… in the air fryer? Isn't that what they're for, cooking nice freshly made sushi and sashimi???

      • +1

I've legitimately seen people buy sashimi sushi and fry the fish.

        I almost shed a tear

        • +1

Oh my gosh… I'd pay a pretty penny to source sashimi grade stuff. Seeing that fried would be similar to seeing grade A5 Kobe being well done…

          An absolute crying shame

            @tebbybabes: Right?!

            Heathens. People are just heathens.

          • +1

@tebbybabes: agreed. my pet peeve is people mixing soy sauce with wasabi and then drowning sashimi in it

    • Throw it all in the thermomix?

  • +1

    why not both?

Fresh cooked cold prawns nom nom nom 😋 🦐

  • +4

I'm guessing you don't eat left over cold pizza for breakfast the next day after a big night?

    • +13

While I'm all for cold seafood, I'm going to take the unpopular position that pizza should be reheated. Reason being that the fat separates out from the cheese and the cooked oil solidifies to fat, settling into lumps of fat throughout the pizza. Reheat it and it all melts and you get a much better texture to everything.

Same reason cold chips taste like crap.

      • +3

Along with pro tip - reheat on a frypan

        • Never tried that. I usually go for microwave then sandwich press.

        • We've had very good results in the oven.

      • +1

Next day pizza is better both reheated in the oven or cold. I always wondered if food safety guidelines would allow such a take out place to exist.. Next day pizza, would so eat it if they made a decent pizza.
Cold lasagne the next day is awesome too.

        That's right, cold lasagne.

  • +11

Lol at least SlavOz gets some positive responses to a post 😂 good luck with this one OP

  • +4

While I agree 100% that skewered prawns taste much better than cold prawns, I'm not against the latter. In fact, I just had some tonight.

However, I don't think OP has experienced the Innuit lifestyle. Does he not know that they eat raw meat, like reindeer leg/muscles or liver and drink its blood. It's a pretty common delicacy to also eat sea-lion meat and whales raw, pretty blubbery. And if you catch fresh salmon, you can also eat that without cooking. It's funny because a quick googling would've brought all of these up.

    • Some quick googling would have also brought up that its normally spelled "inuit".

      • Perhaps there's a Hotel owned by an Inuit… called The Innuit?

    KFC > Seafood

  • +1

I like raw salmon, and when I prep them at home I'd freeze them under -15degreesC for about a week, before I defrost it slowly in my fridge at around 3 degreesC. By doing this eggs of parasite should all be dead if there's any.

I don't eat other sea food raw —— except sea weed.

  • Seafood smells bad enough cold, but heat it up and it smells like hot ass.

  • If you don’t like it cold OP then just deep fried hell out to them before consuming it like then muricans as it’s in their constitution.

  • +3

Throw another shrimp in the chilly bin

    • Kiwi confirmed

Once again, PFP says it all.

  • Put a Prawn Cocktail on the Menu and a Hot Prawn Cocktail on the Menu and see what normal people order…

    • +1

They might assume that 'hot' means it's being served with some sort of chili sauce

      • +1

Mmmm, warmed up seafood sauce on a pub's prawn cocktail. Love a dose of food poisoning.

  • +1

    There's nothing like a dozen hot oysters on a summer's night /s

  • +2

    I’m almost with you except:
Happy to eat cold cooked prawns (it’s kind of an Aussie tradition isn’t it?)
    Enjoy eating sashimi
    Smoked salmon is better cold

I agree though that bugs even when precooked are best charred and served with garlic butter.

I also find it weird when people bring fish/seafood leftover for lunch the next day at work. Personally I wouldn’t want to eat that.

I just don’t know why you care what other people eat? If you don’t like cold seafood don’t eat it.

    • Indeed. What would the epitome of sophistication, the prawn cocktail, taste like if you warmed it up…

  • +3

There's no question for the poll. Is it what you prefer? Is it what you would eat? And seafood is too general a term there are some seafood items I think taste better cooked and some that taste better cold and/or raw.

  • +1

You're wrong about the innuits. Here's a quote from Wikipedia because I couldn't be bothered doing actual research lol. "Searles defines Inuit food as mostly "eaten frozen, raw, or boiled, with very little mixture of ingredients and with very few spices added." https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inuit_cuisine

  • +1

The most amusing part is he is dead wrong about the Innuits, not only did they eat them cold but raw as well and the same for raw meats too. Seafoods like prawns, oysters, lobster etc I find are tastiest cold, love my sashimi too.

    • I guess woodfired stoves in igloos didn't really wasn't such a hot idea

    • It's a troll account.

  • yea…i love a good couple Sushi hand rolls

  • +1

Can I take a shot in the dark and guess you're not much of a traveller?

    • but you its hard to seefood in the dark

  • I'm with you OP
Putting sushi, sashimi & oysters aside, I think cold seafood is a waste of its potential to be something awesome.
I always grill my prawns with garlic and butter. I find cold boiled prawns is bland.
Salmon fillet has so many options and sauces by being cooked.
And while a fresh sashimi lobster is nice on occasions, I prefer it grilled any day of the year

    • +2

      I'm with you OP
Putting sushi, sashimi & oysters aside

      Nice contradiction there…

  • +2

Why not enjoy seafood both ways? Some types of seafood are best enjoyed cold, some hot.

Smoked salmon for one, is best cold. Would you pan fry/bake it and then eat it? No.

Would you eat raw squid or barramundi, and eat it cold? No. You cook it and eat it hot.

  • I mean it comes out of the sea boiling hot, so it should be served boiling hot!

    • A few oceans are actually cold. Like atlantic. So maybe depends where u live.

  • -3

Cold seafood is part of the lizard people who eat babies conspiracy. Those that eat cold seafood are sheep. Wake up sHeEple

  • One of my favourite snacks is microwaved sushi. Yuk I hate eating it cold - so gross

    • haha. love the sarcasm!

  • Cold as Trumps marriage

  • +10

You are trying way too hard to sh*tpost lately here. You ain't SlavOz at least he/she made me laugh.

    • You know your credibility is shot when people are laughing at you

  • hot preferred on most but cold is okay for some occassions

  • Everytime I see people eat them cold, I can't imagine why

If cold means raw then cold is better, richer taste, no sauces to distract.

  • Sashimi you eat cold. crudo you eat cold. Prawn cocktail you eat cold, Ceviche you eat cold.

  • +1

Never been a fan of cold, raw seafood. The texture is what puts me off.

  • Lot seafood like oysters are better cold

  • Getting revenge on Trump is a dish that is best served cold

    • Revenge is a fish best served cold

  • Poll should have both as an option. Many different ways to prepare a meal.

  • -1

    Small minded Trump supporter

  • +1

I just hate those people who come by your desk during lunch and check what you eat and then show you if their approval or dissapproval of your food.

    • I 100% agree with you but have never met anyone else who this bothers. I hate it when people come and ask what i am eating.

  • Nothing wrong with cold seafood - crab, surumi, prawns, mussels in brine/chili vinegar, pasta salads etc especially in summer. Chicken is even nice cold.

Some things that don't work out cold are steak or beef usually, stews, rice, spaghetti, anything that did involve melted cheese.

    • Cold lasagne and cold pizza are awesome. I'd rather cold spag than reheated.

The only things that don't work well are things that are fatty or that dry out. So hot chips are ruined if refrigerated. And a beef only works if it's not fatty. (Cold roast beef).

Some rice is fine cold if it's not dry.

  • Ok then

  • +7

    "I can't imagine why"

sorry to hear about your apparent lack of mental ability

  • Let people at whatever they want. Consequences are their own. But them some people are too invested in it. Like oysters are an aphrodisiac, in some countries they eat Tiger penis. If you can convince people to eat penis to get hard then why not go along for laughs. Maybe ancient people didn't have TV and need some laughs and just wanted to see how far it would go.

  • To each their own. But I personally agree, I prefer hot food to cold food - even with seafood

  • +2

    This guy lol.
    Next minute:
“why do people drink cold milk instead of warm milk?”
“Why do people have cold showers instead of warm showers?”

Honestly my 4 year old has more intellectual questions than this muppet.

  • OP, black caviar, you warm them up?
    No Sashimi for you right?

What's next? Medium rare steaks are unacceptable to you?

The OZB answer: save on electricity and gas bills. However, if OP is willing let us use his/her credit card to pay for electricity and gas bills, I am sure we are all more than happy to always eat warm food.
