That seems like a lot of bike for $524…

  • +3

That seat belongs on a medieval torture device

    • +1

for real, I don't understand why they put these tour de France racing seats on Mountain bikes.

Can anyone recommend us an actual seat for protecting your bum on the hardtrails?

      • +3

No. I've tried a few different seats and there was no noticeable difference.

The best thing I've found for big bumps is riding technique - using legs to lift the arse off the seat. For small bumps I rely on lower tyre pressure/larger tyres.

      • +3

        Wear bib shorts

      • +7

        That's a mountain bike seat.

You have to understand that when it comes to seat comfort, padding is actually much less important than shape and size

      • +3

        That's not how it works.
Sore bum comes from longer rides than you are used to.

But note on an MTB, you need to lower the seat for the downhills. That's why they have a quick release on the seat post.

      • +1

As seats are a personal thing. Maybe these are just a stick standard and expect people ge them to their own choice.

        • +1

Hehe, stick standard. Yeah the seat looks like you are sitting on a stick PITA.
          Ohh you meant stock standard.
My cheap Giant MTB is also uncomfortable to sit for long. Changed the extra seat padding twice, still suffer from sore and numb arse after a while haha.

      • I like serfa reactive gel seats. The ‘cyclists’ will probably scoff but they are comfortable for a commuting bike.

  • +2

Fantastic deal. Would grab one if they delivered. Have had over 10 years' service from my Giant MB and it is still going flawlessly without a single bit of maintenance (ok, I put air in the tyres a few times).

    • +27

Excessive chain wear is going to cost you much more in long term if you don’t at least clean and lubricate it regularly. There are videos on YouTube show what other maintenance you can easily DIY at home to save $ and makes your bike lasts longer.

      • +4

Why are you getting negged for telling people to maintain their bike 🤣

        • +3

Hive Mind sets the first neg and the rest follow, but it evens itself out later when peps like yourself who read first give it the upvotes it deserves.

        • +5

Must be the people that bought that Kmart bike and think it’ll be maintenance free

          • +1

@Chickenleg: It is. It just has a lifespan of a few months before you throw it in the bin and buy another.

        • -4

He is getting nagged for being petty. I thought of mentioning the chain, but I could not be bothered

  • +7

Sh1ts all over the other kmart bike earlier

    • +3

Kmart bike won't get stolen by thieves so wins

      • +4

Heh, don't underestimate yobs with nothing to lose.

      • +4

        My Kmart bike was stolen…

  • Hmmm, would like to see Roam 1 on sale, price has only gone up in late 2021, haven't seen any single sale for the past 18 months or so (except Facebook Marketplace…)

    • I bought the entry level Roam Disc around Xmas time to do a mid drive Ebike conversion for commuting, absolutely love it. So much that I’m contemplating another dual sport type bike to complement the roadie on more casual rides.

      • Cool, I have a 2017 Roam 3 (V-brake) still loving it. The Roam 4 Disc has gone up in price in 2021 for 100, can't justify to buy it, so keeping the Roam 3, or I'll look for an Avanti Discovery / X-plorer, Merida Crossway equivalent when they do sale.

        • Wow, didn’t realize. Yep just saw it’s now 849 and I paid $749 only a few months ago.

    • I waited 4 months for my Roam 1 last year.

If in Brisbane Giant (including Indooroopily) does honour the Cycling Brisbane Giant 10% off on bikes voucher (reluctantly in my case because the price had also gone up in July 2021 after I paid my deposit).

Mechanical disc brakes on something like this?! Mechanical are a pain in the arse, would expect hydraulic in this day and age or otherwise rim brakes for less trouble free maintenance.

Source: already have a mechanical disc brake bike.

    • Agreed, rim brakes work well and are much more cost effective.

      • +2

Rim breaks are fine if you're just riding around town.

But going down mountain bike trails? No.

      • +2

rim brakes do not belong on any mountain bike in my opinion. they're frankly dangerous in the wet. Mechanical disk brakes vary widely between models. Cheaper models are garbage, but something like what avid supply are very good (not as good as a hydro disc, but still much better than any rim brake) and very low maintenance. If you leave a bike in the shed for 5 years with hydro discs, chances are good that you'll come back to degraded seals and a bit of a mess, but mechanical brakes will be good to go after 10+ years sitting in the shed unused, no need for bleeding. simple setup etc. Rim brakes are fine if you are just cruising gently along a fire trail or something, but if you want to ride down a hill kind of fast, especially where it might be wet, then it is well worth getting a hydro or mechanical disc.

    • +2

It is the cheapest Talon hence on sale I guess? But yeah even the Aldi bike from years ago special buys came with hydraulic disc brakes and 9 speed at slightly lower price than this. Unsure there is still a support shortage or simply Giant has raised their prices again.

      • The last aldi bike wasn't hydraulic

I know this because I bought one and returned it once I saw how crap it was

    • +1

Yes, but keep in mind that for this price, you can upgrade to a set of Shimano MT200s for less than a hundred bucks, if you're worried about having hydraulic brakes.

      • 45 each, plus hose, plus fluid, plus fittings

Probably closer to 200 if you need to buy the tools as well

        • +1

Nah, 45 each ready to rumble.

They come out of the box with all parts attached, and pre-bled; all you have to do is install them, and they use a couple of standard Allen keys, a 4mm for the lever and a 5mm for the calliper bolts.

The only difficult part is the internal routing, which you can do yourself with a bit of effort, or pay a bike shop probably less than 20 bucks to do for you. Shimano's one-way bleeding system is quite clever, in that you can take the hose off the lever and reattach it without losing oil or requiring a bleed.

And last but not least, if you don't have the time or money to maintain a hydraulic brake set up, maybe whinging about how a sub-600 dollar bargain bike has cable brakes is a bit silly.

    • one of my bikes is still mechanical discs …..not as nice as hydraulic but at least it’s an easy upgrade to hydraulic as all the metal work and holes are already on the frame and fork …… you can’t convert rim caliper brakes as some of the mounting holes might not be on frame or fork ……. ebay has lots of new cheap hydraulic brake kits from stripped bikes if the mechanical becomes a big enough nuisance …..

  • I paid $600 for my talon 2 last year. I didn't even know they made a talon 4.

    This year $949 for a talon 2?

    • Prices have increased a little, but not that much in most cases. I'd expect to see they've adjusted the parts choices and that's pushed the price up. Giant's 0/1/2/3 etc models are often inconsistent price/spec wise year on year, even pre covid.

    • They drop the price on run out models when the next year's model is due to drop, if you buy a new model you are lucky to knock off $100.
The talon 2 usually sits around $8-900.

      • Not last year they didn't. In May 2021 the Giant stores were almost empty, and the new stock started arriving in September 2021 - my Roam 1 arrived on 30/09/21 and the Roam 1 had been sold out at ALL SE QLD Giant stores since December 2020.

        • Yeah I heard there was a shortage which means if nepfelis got theirs for $600 they were very lucky or it was an older model which still seems unlikely given the scarcity of them.

          • +1

@Spendmore: Mines a 2021 model in the red colour. There was a massive list of people waiting for the grey.

It was actually purchased late 2020 haha was a bike from the future.

To be honest it's sat gathering dust for 12 months now :(

            • @neofelis: Such a great price then! You scored.
Even around the$800 mark the Talon 2 is good value.
              Well done.

    • Increased demand + broken supply chain = inflation

  • Grab a hub motor and a battery and you have yourself a rocket of a e-bike for around $1500.

    • Still not as cheap as Aldi's Special Buy $999 ;p

  • +1

I ll go in today and look at bike for my wife, temp4 and bliss are on sale. Will ask of they can do a deal on Talon 1 for me at the same time.

    • If in Brisbane ask about the Cycling Brisbane 10% off

Officially it is only Ashgrove & Lutwyche that are mentioned but when I called around year, the others would match it. I bought from Indooroopilly and got it.

      https://www.cyclingbrisbane.com.au/partners/giant-ashgrove

    • Got a temp Liv bike for Mrs. Tried Talon 1 for size in XL but they wouldn't discount it, something about low availability. Only Talon 3 would be reduced by $100, for around $740 after disc form memory. Since I wanted at least Talon 2, I had to pass.

  • Any Sydney dealers price match?

  • Just emailed them.
They only have size 29.4 now

  • What's the weight?
