Do these use more energy compared to the non-energy monitoring ones?

    • The power usage of these are relatively low, the energy monotony function just measures the energy and displays it in the app so no additional power used.

    • +3

I plugged two of these into each other and measured less than 2 watts. So yes they do, but fundamentally makes no difference.

  • Was about to buy one yesterday, lucky I waited :)

  • +2

    These are amazing

  • HomeAssistant now supports energy monitoring with these.

Seems like TPLink made it stop working.

      • +3

that was a long time ago - energy monitoring is working just fine

        • Not sure that it ever broke the AU models either - I've had one of these prettymuch since launch and it has been working fine.

I've got it on my washing machine - HA watches consumption and does a push notification to remind us to hang out the load.

          • @senorclean: Mine have worked too, but is the firmware up to date?

          • @senorclean: Now if only it could hang the clothes for us as well, my life would be complete lol

        • I'm on HomeBridge and thinking of switching to HA. Can I get historical graphs on my energy usage in the dashboard?

      • Only for "certain Kasa Smart Home devices (e.g. HS100, HS110)". Not the KP115

        • This was why I only bought the HS110 historically, but looks like its changed according to the website. KP115 did not say energy monitoring compatible before, and now it does.

The power strip is also on sale

    • I was about to ask the same, what's the difference between these TP-Link ones and other Tuya-based ones like Arlec Grid Connect, Kogan etc.?

      • +1

Only difference is the design, function the same when connected to the same Tuya app.

        • And price, Arlec ones used to be $17.50, now $19.86.

Was thinking more in terms of difference in usability, stability, firmware etc

          • +1

@John Kimble: In my short experience it appears that the Tuya ones don't talk as regularly with Home Assistant. Energy usage is updated in the Tuya app pretty much immediately, but Home Assistant lags sometimes by minutes. Not sure if this is a misconfiguration somewhere or a setting I can change, but this is with stock Home Assistant OS and the official Tuya integration.

TP-Link I've had for some time and they update in Home Assistant almost instantly.

There's also a little bit of fluffing about setting up the official Tua integration - need a Tuya developer account to get some credentials to connect it to Home Assistant. With TP-Link, you give Home Assistant the IP address of the plug and you're done. Yeah.

Tuya you can update the firmware and still have it work (at least with the official integration). TP-Link may/may not have issues.

Personally, if I was confident that the TP-Links will still work directly with Home Assistant, I'd be get them in a heartbeat; even at the higher cost. Seriously considering taking up this deal even without that confidence…

            • @Chandler: Cheers.

I don't use Home Assistant, I use Google Home.

              • @John Kimble: Was going to say you're missing out, but if Google Home is doing enough for you then not really!

Sounds like you know about Home Assistant too, so presumably nothing there for you anyway :)

                • +1

@Chandler: Yeah, I don't have too many devices to automate. Just a few lights and plugs.

      • Two different ecosystems. TP-Link Kasa does not work with Tuya - but you can combine/group/run automations with both using a third party app like SmartThings, Google Home or Alexa. I have found TP-Link to be more reliable and the devices are very responsive. The Tuya cloud-based service has a slight delay and goes down every now and then but the benefit of Tuya is that there are a lot more compatible IoT devices. You can run Tuya locally but it is a hassle to set up.

    • +1

Try this one from BigW instead for $15.95. I bought one with 25% cashback from CR at that time. It's been working great and the app is also pretty cool.

      • No can do, a lot of my GPOs are installed on the skirting board, almost touching the floor, so need one where the prongs are on the bottom.

  • I've got lots. The software is great, very easy to use.

  • What do people do with the energy monitoring? I get seeing how much power draw an appliance takes, but what do you do with the info? Buy better appliances?

    • +4

For me, I've become more self conscious on when/how long/which program to use certain appliances

    • +6

Can help if you're on a TOU energy plan, to help better schedule high energy use appliances.
Otherwise, if you're into home automation, you can use the info to tell you when something is done (e.g. no power use from dryer = send notification to say dryer is done)

    • +4

I have an alert go to my Google when my washing machine downstairs has finished (drawing any power).

    • +1

Aside from monitoring power use to identify appliances that are using a lot of power you can also create automations based on whether a device is drawing any power.

    • +5

I have mine connected to my power tool battery chargers, so when I plug the battery in, I press the manual button on the socket and it turns the chargers on until their power draw falls below 5w then it switches them off once fully charged.

    • I use energy monitors/power metres to gain a better idea of how much power my devices and gadgets use, especially when they're idle/sleeping.

For example, my Sonos Playbar (soundbar) draws around 5-6W of power continuously when sleeping (10-11W when actually in use and playing sound), so I usually power it off at the powerpoint when I'm not using it.

My Lectrofan white noise generater uses no more than 1-2W of power even when turned up to very loud settings, which really surprised me. It's super energy efficient.

I'm just an efficiency geek who gets joy out of optimising stuff. I also maintain a Google sheet where I note down the power draw of all my devices in various states.

Why are there Kasa and Tapo branded plugs from TP-Link which seem to need a different app, find it all very confusing with different apps for different models. OK most end up working with Google for day to day but why all these other apps needed for products made by the same company? I have about 6 different apps now for various things around the house :(

    • They are just two different ecosystems at different price points. Kasa products generally have more features and the app has a bit more functionality. I have about 12 smarthome apps - most only used for initial install. Once my smart devices are linked to my wifi/zigbee network I just use Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings so multiple apps are not really a problem.

  • For those who have this, what is the width measurement out of the box. Need one for a dual wall plug. Currently have the meross ones but when plugged in, I can't use the other point so need a slim unit.

  • +1

Question about the timers. If I set a timer - say 9:00am to 11:00am and I then leave the house(work) 8-5 with my smartphone will the timer still work? ie once set will this device just work, or is the smartphone app what triggers it?

    • +4

      Just works.

      • thankyou

      • -1

Just works…. as long as the internet is still up, assuming the timer is managed by The Cloud

    • +5

It actually saves the schedule locally on the device (i.e. smart plug, smart globe, etc.). Once the time is set up your smartphone will not need to be connected to the internet for the timer to work at the time its supposed to work. Mine work even when my wifi at home goes down and they keep working when the power comes back on after a power failure as well.

It appears JB Hi-Fi has all the TP-Link smart plugs on sale - can get the Tapo version with Energy Monitoring for $21.60 or both the Tapo or Kasa without energy monitoring for $19.20 each. A 4 pack of the Tapo without EM is $74 = $18.50ea.

For those not aware and may already own the Kasa HS100 or HS110 plugs - the Kasa and Tapo product lines currently each require two separate apps from TP-LInk to manage (or at least initially configure before connecting with HomeBridge or HomeAssistant).

Also FYI - TP-Link may be retiring the Kasa line in favour of Tapo over the coming year

  • is Tplink using the Tuya platform? any idea?

    • +1

No - they are different ecosystems. TP-Link devices do not use Tuya chips. You can combine devices in a third party app like SmartThings, Google Home or Alexa.

  • Been waiting for these to go on sale. Been waiting a while. When using the app the device is very responsive. Many thanks OP!

  • Anyone know if this can send a notification once the usage drops below a certain limit such as if the washing machine or dryer have finished?

  • Genuine question, where do you use this product? TV or Fridge?

    • +1

Fridge/Freezer, Washing Machine, Dishwasher. Want to get one for the Dryer.

I get notifications when the dishwasher or washing machine finishes; also get an audio announcement over smart speakers when the washing machine is finished. Want to setup similar for the fridge when it's finished a cooling cycle in the fast-freeze drawer.

And these are all based on energy usage, which I get from the monitoring plugs.

  • +1

Anyone know of an outdoor rated smartplug?

    • +1

      Bunnings have them

  • Interesting. How come Bunnings and Officeworks have stopped selling TP Link smart plugs?

  • Bought this as a 2 pack last year at JB for $35. Works so good on my aquarium, want to get 4 more.

  • FYI. All Kasa products are being discontinued and will be replaced solely by Tapo.

  • What do these do? ME DUM

    • +1

Tells u how much power you use and is a timer, works from app on your phone, can turn on and off remotely.

      • that's pretty COOL

  • Can these be flashed with tasmota or esp home?

    • Nope - stuck with TP-Link propietary stuff for better or worse.
In my experience, it is pretty stable and plays nicely with HA locally (but I also have a bunch of Tasmota stuff in the house).

  • +2

15:45 on the 22.04.22 and they are back in stock at Amazon

    • Not that I can see :/

      • That went quickly. I had received another camelcamelcamel alert in my inbox at 2:21pm and checked. It said “dispatches in 5 days” at the time but as you said it’s now showing currently unavailable.

  • Jbhifi have them on special, grabbed 2 for $46

  • Went and bought an Arlec one from Bunnings the other day and received a TP-Link one from this deal today.

Appears as though the grid connect app is a bit better than the TP-Link app in terms of historical energy monitoring stats, TP-Link only shows the last 30 days, whereas Arlec can show graphs for previous months (perhaps even years).
