Getting Sick of Seeing "100% Recycled Polyester" As a Selling Point

Anyone notice exercise apparel such as Under Armour, Adidas, Reebok, New Balance all have their TShirts, and Shorts as 100% Recycled Polyester?
Why is this a selling point for me?

Sure we want to recycle plastics, but why does it have to be for human wear?
I find they're of inferior quality compared to a Cotton/Polyester or Cotton/Elastane blend - after 3-4 used in the gym, they're almost ready to go in the bin.

  • They hold body odour
  • Terrible at wicking sweat
  • Naturally stink

100% agree - but hell, it sucks in the naive greenies

  • Clothing represents a huge sustainability issue. I think labels like this is good, it might help convince more people that more sustainable clothing is a good thing.

Improving quality of clothing is a big part of that too. Good quality underwear and shirts can survive many dozens of washes and wears and still look new. But a lot of cheaper clothing you can buy is about ready to throw out by the 12th wash. More prone to fraying stitches, holes, stretching out too soon. If everyone in Australia bought underwear that lasted twice as long, then that's like a million kilograms of material every year that doesn't need to be collected and manufactured, then shipped across the world.

Recycled materials isn't a selling point, but it should be.

    • Send me your old soiled undies. I'll wear them again… on my head.

      • wrap your lunchbox in them? gotta be sustainable, don't be wasting plastic or paper bags.

      • As long as you aren't buying new undies to wear on your head, that's fine with me.

        • Upon reflection I think that comment of mine went too far.

No idea why you were negged for this, seems like a sensible post with valid points, regardless of personal opinions

    • it might help convince more people that more sustainable clothing is a good thing

      No its not.

The only form of sustainable clothing is 100% organic cotton.
And im seeing many retailers brace this, and they're good quality.

Recycling polyester is a disaster, each wash the polyester fibres break up and end up on water streams

I agree.. I also hate those coles redcycle benches. Furniture should be made from wood not melted bread bags.

    100% Recycled Polyester?

I prefer virgin plastic. The unused texture is absolutely fabulous.

    Do not buy the product.

To quote you "Why is this a selling point for me?" - it clearly isn't.

It is clearly a selling point for others. They will buy the product, you don't have to. Choose something else.

    "Vegan leather" is worse imo…

    • That's very Hannibal.
