Does It Take Long for Providers to Drop The Price of Older Model iPhones on a Plan Once a New Phone Comes out?

Hi all

I currently have 2 iphone 11's on optus with one plan ending in June and one in October.

I am going to remain with optus as we have a good package deal with 2 phones and NBN and currently, the iphone 13 pro (currently) would work out to costing exactly the same as my current plan only for 12 months longer.

With the release of the 14 coming up, I was considering delaying upgrading the plan expiring in June, hope by October prices for the 13's have come down once the 14's are out to at least match up the timing of both plans.

I am not looking to upgrade just because I can, but both my kids have iphone 6's with many things they use no longer supported and being in high school now, so they would get our 11's.

So question is, could I expect iphone 13 prices to come down in October if the 14 is out? If its unlikely I would just upgrade the June one sooner and give it to the kid whos phone looks like a mosaic tile. If its likely then I would be happy to wait 3-4 months.

cheers

  • Finding stock of older models will be a challenge as they usually discontinue them soon after. iPhone 12 is sold out across the board at Optus and the prices still aren't too dissimilar than iPhone 13 range so doesn't seem like discounted.

I haven't kept tabs on any other provider so worth cross-shopping current iPhone 12 prices to get an idea.

Also, if you do plan to change up every 2 years or so, it can be more cost-effective to buy the iPhones outright and get a separate SIM-only. Then resell the iPhones and put that towards next upgrade etc.

    • Similar happened with iPhone SE. I was hoping to find a 2020 on sale for a price I could afford but they seemingly vanished after the 2022 was released and the ones still in stock haven’t really dropped in price.
