Prezzee Shopback Limiting to $5/$10 Coles Gift cards

Can anyone please explain why Coles Gift cards are limited to $5 and $10 denominations when I try to swap into them from a $150 Prezzee eGift card or from a $100 Shopback Super Smart eGift Card?

  • Could be stock issue/limits. I had same issue with ikea 2 Xmas ago. Had to wait till late Jan to redeem for 100/200 denominations. Email support to see if this is the case - they will be able to advise lead time

  • I have also just noticed too that I can only swap a $10 Shopback Super Smart eGift Card for $5 Coles Gift cards and not a $10 denomination.
It feels like they are trying to make it difficult to swap into Coles G.C.'s as a disincentive.

    • It is more likely to be Coles who set some restrictions to 3rd parties. Maybe it'll reset on Monday.

I noticed the other day it had reduced them from hundreds down to 30 max for the standard coles one.

I then also seen there were a few different Coles card options at the time and I could still get Coles 'Groceries' specific one in the range of $100/200 etc but they were restricted meaning they cant be spent on Alcohol, Cigarettes etc which suited me fine.

Maybe keep an eye out for that option if it suits your needs as well

    • BillyStorm, you are onto something. I didn't know that there were 2. I never had probs before with the standard Coles G.C.s. and they are the ones that the restriction is now on. I tested the Coles 'Groceries' specific ones and they are fine. Thanks. Le Peck

It’s most likely lack of stock.

This routinely happens with Coles gift cards on Prezzee, as I suspect Coles Group are quite stingy with the number of Coles gift cards they provide to Prezzee in a given week. It doesn’t help that there was also the Mother’s Day Smart eGift Card promotion earlier this week

Prezzee is not the only gift card portal that sometimes faces stock issues with Coles gift cards; Lifestyle Rewards (which operates HCF Thank You and Lumo Rewards, amongst other gift card portals) also run out of Coles gift cards from time to time (even though there’s a $500 per week redemption limit per user) and it takes a few days for stock to be replenished.

If you really need a Coles gift card right now, there’s always the Coles Groceries gift card. However, there are two things to be mindful of:

    • You cannot use them to purchase alcohol (which you cannot purchase in-store at Coles anymore anyway), tobacco, gift cards or phone cards. If you try to purchase one of these items using a Coles Groceries gift card, you’ll get an Invalid Product Mix error and staff cannot bypass this error.

    • Occasionally, you’ll trigger a bug in Coles POS’ system where if you redeem a Coles Groceries gift card and proceed to redeem another gift card (because the Coles Groceries gift card had insufficient balance), the POS system will refuse to let you redeem any more gift cards and the EFTPOS terminal will keep on flashing up an Invalid Product Mix error. It’s a bug with the way the Coles Groceries gift card checks whether you’re purchasing alcohol, tobacco, gift cards or phone cards, because the POS system will think you trying to redeem another gift card is the same as you trying to purchase a gift card in that transaction. This bug rarely happens, but it’s happened to me two or three times in the last couple of years.

    • The insufficient balance issue can happen to Coles or Coles Group & Myer giftcards too. I am not sure if it has been sorted out as I do not proceed with insufficient balance now. Just use it as a way to show the balance and go back split pay as normal.

      • I think we’re talking about two different bugs.

When I was writing about the bug where a Coles Groceries gift card will cause you to not redeem any other gift cards, it has only happened to me when I went to:

        • Mixed Payments > Card / Gift Card > keyed in the full amount available on the gift card > swiped / scanned the gift card, entered the PIN and had payment accepted, then

        • Grabbed a second gift card (e.g. Coles gift card) > Card / Gift Card > swiped / scanned the gift card.

As soon as I scanned the second gift card (a Coles gift card, not a Coles Groceries gift card), swiping or scanning the gift card would cause an Invalid Product Mix error to come up on the EFTPOS terminal, before I got an error message and was sent back to the payment screen.

This error has never happened to me when I’ve only split payments between Coles gift cards, Coles Group gift cards, Coles Group & Myer gift cards, and/or Coles flybuys gift cards in the transaction, and I’ve done about 300 transactions at Coles using gift cards in the last few years. To be fair, I carefully track the available balance on a gift card issued by Coles Group, so I don’t remember the last time I saw the insufficient balance message on a Coles checkout.
