  • Maybe i should start thinking of moving away from Nespresso and look at this Coffee machine …

    • Even consider a super automatic if you can’t be bothered, like Delonghi or Philips.

    • Just be careful of falling down a rabbit hole, next minute you're obsessed with coffee and spending thousands on equipment!

      • -1

already done that with the Nespresso machines ;)

        • U spent thousands on a nespresso machine?

          • @blues99: got the nespresso Lattissima pro and De'Longhi Nespresso - Gran Lattissima

Gave my Girlfriend the Pro, these was at launch, no savings , so around @1800+

  • No stock in TAS, reckon it's still worth grabbing at this price without the store credit?

  • Finally, I bought one. Let's see what the fuss is all about with bdb

  • Dam should have waited. Free $100 store credit. Got it on the last TGGC deal. Worth the money.

    • You would have to drive to Toowoomba to get the C&C credit.

I suppose that's better than Sydneysiders driving to Canberra. :D

      • Fair point. Definitely happy with it. The mother's Day pack is good for any new starters. Free knock-box and coffee cups. Not sure about the coffee they send though.

  • Great machine. I tried to get one of these from GG last time they had the same deal, waited for over a month then they finally contacted me to inform that they couldn't get stock. Hopefully they don't do the same this time.

  • +2

The best machine in 1000-2000 price range.

    • Indeed, there's nothing else compares in terms of feature.

    • +3

I believe the only downside is longevity, it's my understanding you can get other machines that will last forever with the right maintenance, but this is eventually going to break. In terms of features, this destroys the competition.

      • I have an older Italian machine that will last forever and even I was tempted by this deal! But I would get so annoyed when the Breville dies after a few years so decided against it. The Breville wouldn't make better coffee than mine but I would love to have the features the Breville has though.

      • These machines can last a long time with regular maintenance - the Italian machines also require this but buyers generally are used to sending them in for periodic maintenance or doing it themselves.

Some buyers of a BDB do not get them serviced regularly (if at all), and discard them when they break down.

        • How often are you meant to get them serviced and how much does it cost?

          • @bleeder: Every 2 years is what I am going to do - although I will send mine in before the 2y warranty expires to check it over
            .
I think the cost for o-rings and a descale was around $120.

After the warranty is up I may do them myself every now and again.

            • @repeat: Oh good idea to do them before the warranty expires, will follow suit. Where do you get it done?

              • +1

@bleeder: If it's under warranty - usually Breville will give you few service centre options.

My past experience - I call Breville support, explain the issue, they give me some authorisation number (or job number, or whatever number) and tell me what service centres I can use.
I go to the service centre with the machine and that number - they are very happy to fix whatever is required because they know Breville is going to pay the bill.

                • @SickDmith: Thanks. On my Oracle my pucks are coming out a bit wet and soggy (the shots themselves seem fine though), I'm worried the solenoid valve isn't working, but it's been like that since day one so maybe it's something I'm doing wrong or it's just the way the machine is. I didn't tell Breville as I thought I may have to post it somewhere, if I can just take it to a service centre close by to have a look it might be worth the effort.

                  • @bleeder: To see solenoid valve in action - when you do cleaning cycle (with rubber disk in the portafilter) as the pumps shuts off you should be able to see water coming into drip tray.
If full pressure coming to the portafilter (hard to say with Oracle, removing pressure gauge was a bad idea) and it dumps to the drip tray at the end of the cycle - solenoid valve is Ok.

Wet puck happens when you don't have enough coffee - leaving too much space for water above the puck.
Usually it is just convenience/aesthetics and it doesn't translate into shot quality directly.
You can try to increase coffee quantity a bit - you might grind a bit coarser because of that - that would leave less space for water. But do not overdose.

                    • @SickDmith: Thanks. Funny you say that about coffee quantity, my grinder spat out a bit of extra coffee today for some unknown reason, I noticed after I pulled my shot my puck was drier than normal, but there was an imprint of the shower screen on top I don't know if that's a bad thing. The main reason I want the dry puck is just because it makes the workflow a cleaner tidier process. Looks like the solenoid valve is working, I just need a smaller basket for my 18g shots.

                      • @bleeder: Shower screen imprint is Ok. And this is the only way to get drier puck - don't leave extra space for water.

But if you put too much coffee it can cause cracks in the puck and channeling.
So under-dose is safer for good extraction.

                        How much is too much?
Some people do a coin test - after tamping put 5c coin (some people use 10c) on top of the coffee, insert the portafilter like you do for extraction, but don't do extraction. Remove the portafilter and check the coin - it should be still on the surface of the coffee. If coin is pressed into the coffee - you have too much.

About the basket… There is something about Breville… maybe shower screen is not standing out enough to match the dose… I will explain.

I got 15g VST basket. But if I put 15g there I have a lot of headroom (that space between dry coffee puck and shower screen).

In order to touch the shower screen at the end of extraction I need to put there… 17.5g I think… Don't remember exactly…

Usually I use 15g and live with wet puck. :|

                        • +1

@SickDmith: Lots of good information there, thanks man. I've been considering getting a VST basket at some point, I'll keep in mind that I might need to go slightly smaller and overfill it.

  • +3

it hurt me to leave $135 on the table, but wasnt going to drive to shepparton to collect it.

  • +2

Ordered - paid the delivery because like fox81 I wasn't going to drive to Shep to get it, and it was still worth it for the price. Any deals for the smart grinder pro?

  • Got this machine and it's been great! However I'm struggling to get a optimum 7-9 BAR pressure on the bigger 2-shot coffee basket? I'm using freshly ground beans and the correct basket as per the instructions.

Using the single shot basket, i'm getting the golden 7-9 BAR pressure.

Any tips for an eager barista?

    • +5

      Grind finer.

    • I take it you are below that range? If so I would think you might need to grind your coffee a little finer… although it's very strange if the single basket is getting 7-9 and the double shot basket is not… are you sure you are using open baskets for each?

Eg, if you check this image: https://breville-production-aem-assets.s3.us-west-2.amazonaw… you should only be using the 2x baskets on the left of the photo (lots of small holes), don't use the baskets on the right as they are pressurised and not needed for freshly ground coffee if don't well.

      Good luck!

      • Every bean is different but my smart grinder Pro setting for a fine grind is normally between 10&11, and I grind my beans for 17 seconds then tamp and then another 1-2 seconds, otherwise your grinds spills over, and i don't like wastage. I then use the dual wall (correct bean type) filter in the dual boiler for between 35-40s. Perfect coffee for my beans./ I buy from Sicilia coffee. The strong sampler pack - The Aureo or the Crema Forte are my choice. Hope this helps anyone.

        • +1

dual wall basket? not single wall, ummm

    • +1
      1. Run a group head cleaning cycle to make sure there's no gunk impacting your pressure.

      2. Try grinding on a finer setting
        And/or
Are you adding enough coffee to the double shot basket? How many grams are you adding?

      3. If the above doesn't do anything then you might need to run tests for solenoid issues or the over pressure valve going off too early

Edit: if grinding finer also not doing anything, it might still be an issue with your grinder e.g. sometimes you need to adjust the conical burrs

      • Unfortunately I'm already grinding the finest - bear in mind that I have a cheap Sunbeam grinder which probably doesn't cut the mustard with this machine. But i'm just puzzled as to why I'm getting good pressure with the single baskets but not with the double basket - and I've made sure there are enough coffee grounds in the basket!

        • probably need a better grinder, but in the mean time, try to increase your coffee dose for the single wall double shot basket (20-21gm), should help to increase pressure.
Edit: level & tamp carefully to minimize channelling.
place the blind basket and read max pressure gauge.

          • @huntabargain: I placed my blind basket and run 1 shot button, I got just below 9. Probably 8.6.
Do you think this is something that I should fix?

            • +1

@11CENTS: The most recommend / common pressure with blind basket is around 9bar, which means when extracting, you probably get max 8 bar?
Breville must have adjusted the OPV (over pressure valve) to this number. If it is too high, you tend to get bitter coffee.

              • @huntabargain: Yeah I could only reach 8.5 or less, generally
This is after a few years.

        • Sunbeam grinder won't grind fine enough out of the box, you'll need to install a shim or add a washer to get it where it needs to be for unpressurised baskets.

I have used washers from Bunnings on them in the past (as instructed by coffeesnob forum posts) with good success but ultimately the grind quality is just not comparable to grinders designed for espresso.

The reason being that the steps between the grind levels are way too big on those Sunbeam grinders, one adjustment takes 10-15s off the extraction very difficult to get it dialed in even when grind is fine enough. Secondly, the amount of grinds that stay in the grinder is atrocious. I used to tilt that thing 45 degrees and whilst bashing it and the number of stray grinds that came out was staggering.

        • I fill the double basket to more than what the razor suggests. The razor is not the be-all and end-all.

          • +2

@Nuggets: Heck, some would say you should throw out the razor when you unbox your machine, given how detrimental it is to espresso brewing

    • Maybe increase the dose?

I usually grind 19.5g into the double basket.

How much are you putting in?

  • Is there anywhere selling discounted (or points) ultimate home gift card (can be used in TGG) now?

  • +1

dam no local stock, killer deal. My coffee machine just died also. Would of been good to get the $100 store credit to spend on the grinder.

  • +1

I don't take milk in my espresso. I'm tempted by this machine but hesitant as essentially half of the machine won't be used. Any suggestions of a more suitable but equally good (PID, 9 bar, etc) machine?

    • any coffee machine comes with steam wand for frothing, so you won't use this feature.. Do you have grinder or do you buy ground coffee? The BDB might be too bulky if you only making espresso.

      • I have a good grinder - Eureka Mignon Specialita (courtesy of the deal on here about two months ago)

        • Good grinder, I have the same and happy with it. So what is your current machine and is it still working?

          • @huntabargain: Don't laugh…Delonghi Dedica, hence why I am looking to upgrade. Now thinking of going to the ECM Classika PID….!

            • +1

@zeg: I think for espresso, would be the perfect choice, and will be a good match with your Eureka grinder. Here is some description about it.
The ECM Classika PID is at the absolute top of the single boiler category. Beautifully made, it has a PID temperature controller for stable temperature…

              • @huntabargain: I got one (ECM) a couple of days ago. It's awesome.

    • +2

The steam boiler still serves the purpose of preheating the intake charge into the brew boiler - so the steam boiler is not all wasted in making espresso - it contributes to lower thermal shock in the brew boiler by operating this way when brewing.

Here's a useful diagram showing the "triple heat system" in the BDB:

      https://zuccarini.ca/breville-oracle-and-oracle-touch-manual-super-automatic-espresso-machine/#iLightbox[74d372f347c25dae8e1]/0

    • Sounds like pods are right up your alley. Quite a few roasters package their grounds in Nespresso compatible pods these days, or you can get reusable pods to fill freshly grounded coffee. These machines are very compact and require minimum cleaning.

Actually having a frother presents other options, such as hot chocolate or other milk based drinks, doesn't have to be coffee.

    • +2

Personally I would still recommend this machine and just don't use the steam wand. If you are using it purely for espresso I also recommend checking out the slayer mod you can do that puts this machine on par with much more expensive machines: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmQgxQ5Higw&t=8s

      • That's an amazing video. I want him to make my coffee. I can't imagine ever getting fastidious enough to want to go through those steps, but kudos to those who do.

    • Flair 58?

  • +1

Is this the same machine as the dynamic duo minus the grinder?

  • Meanwhile it's $1,999 at DJ :D

    • and $1049 at JB

  • Anyone recommend a good grinder to go with this? Not necessarily a cheap one, something possibly better than the breville grinder pro and if it’s cheaper then even better

  • Only Brighton had stock in Melbourne so I snagged one. My bro went to buy just now and no stock available.

  • Sadly bought one last time with TGGC. Regretting jumping on it so early but can't be bothered to get it then "refund" the previous order haha.

  • For TGG store credit on C&C, it expires in 4 weeks and you cannot buy gift cards. Any suggestions on how to go around it the ozb way.

    • Buy something using the credit and return it or cancel the order, I believe you get served a longer expiry credit or a gift card after getting the refund.

  • On TGG's site it says this promo ends on the 11th but this is expiring tonight here. Is the short expiry date related to the $100 C&C in-store credit, or I'm missing something else?

    • Yeah wth. I didn’t pull the trigger because the TOP10 code when I checked said expiring 08 May… now I went to buy tonight and it’s not working :(

Shame as I could click and collect from Perth too.

It’s the OzB way though. Buy first, question later… always.

      • Yeah, the info on their website confused me. If you wanted to buy then you should have pulled the trigger early on. I don't have enough space for this machine, plus don't drink that much coffee, so will wait for a deal on a smaller one (Bambino Plus?). Don't worry, there will probably be another deal on this one in the near future, as usual.

  • +1

Just got a call from TGG, no stock for delivery and will need to wait 2-3 weeks at least.

  • Anyone know when the $100 credit is issued? Is it on a certain date, or straight after the sale?

    • +1

  • Anyone received their machine? I’m being told very low stock

    • Haven't received mine as yet.
Website still shows as 'BackOrdered' - I'm losing confidence…

I did receive my bonus gift pack today though!

    • Nope and website says won’t be restocked once sold out.

Wonder if they are busy manufacturing them - reminds me of the good old jerky deal (where a great product came at the end of it all)

        • I think it's automatic, as long as you provided an email address during check out. Will find out in a few days i suppose.

  • Can someone help me with the store credit please? When I bought the machine I was told that I need to claim from the website. I bought on the 5th of May and when I try to enter in the details it says I'm not eligible. Thanks in advance!

  • Any idea how big the packaging is? Thinking of sending it to my niece and then bringing it back on the plane when I'm over at Melbourne for a holiday. Hand carry on board possible?
