Best to pay the first $699.10 with discounted gift cards and the last $200 with Zip for the $20 cashback :)

      • Not sure why I can't combined online giftcards and Zip together. The option to pay via Zip didn't pop up when finalising the payment.

Regardless, it's a good deal and got one. Thanks op.

        • Wondering anyone bought this coffee machine has got the 6% cash back? Mine first didn't get tracked, then found been rejected. Did not pay by gift card, The Good guys got my paypal payment and hold the money for more than a month for the delivery then changed the order date to the day when they actually delivered it. Now rejected the cash back.what a crap

    Wow feels like 2012..

    • My thoughts exactly, I don't understand how this machine is still pretty much unbeatable after so many years! There is still effectively no competition for this.

Great deal. My 5 year old dual boiler is about to tick over 8k shots.

    • +3

That's 4.38 cups of coffee a day for 5 years!

      • +2

Shot count would include running water through the portafilter or group head plus clean/backflush too

        • Wonder if the shot counter goes up by 2 when you do a double shot? Otherwise my count seems low.

          • +1

@kulprit: I think I remember seeing somewhere that it registers a shot whenever it’s pulling water for more than 15s, so a double would still be 1 shot

            • @Ayanami: Half the time when I rinse my portafilter it's probably going over 15s, so mine is definitely going to overestimate.

              • +2

@bleeder: Any shot over 7 seconds is counted. If you manually back flush abs stop before 7s it won’t contribute to total shot count

                • @OBarty: OK, I probably never stop before 7 seconds haha

                  • @bleeder: Yeah I don’t either, I let it run for a single shot button press, however long that is by default as I don’t use it for anything else.

                    • @Ayanami: You only need to run the shot for as long as it takes for pressure to ramp up. If you press and hold the manual button (pre infusion) for half a second, then release (ramps up to full pressure) then it will get to full pressure quickly , should be within 7 seconds (marginal on first back flush as Pf basket filling with water before pressure rises) then when you stop the pressure abs water purge into drip tray. Do this three or four times after each brew session to keep things clean. Abs the same with cleaning powder every 2-4 weeks depending on use (then rinse / back flush with just water after powder).

                • @OBarty: Ah thanks OBarty, wasn’t sure I’d remembered the time right.

        • +1

Shot count would include running water through the portafilter or group head plus clean/backflush too

          That's Ok.
The counter there to estimate pump life (not your caffeine intake) :)))

I've heard Ulka vibration pump lifespan is around 5k on-off cycles. This is a rough estimate - some dies earlier, some later.

    • +1

Apologies, how do you check the cup count?

      • +7

When the machine is off, press and hold the one and two shot buttons for 5 seconds. While still holding, press the power button. Release all buttons. You'll see 00:00.
        Press the menu button.
The shot count then displays at x10 less than actual count e.g. 150 displayed = 1500.

        • Jeez. Makes you wonder why the make Simone information to difficult to access

        • Nice! 820 shots here in approx 270 days so 3/day which is about spot on I'd say

    • How do you find out the 8k shots? Is it anywhere in the machine?

      • +2

        Read legs’ comment above.

    • I replaced my 2015 BDB with a new one in December, new machine just clocked over 680.

Owning the 2015 machine for a while taught me how to operate it, perform routine maintenance and understand when to take it in for routine servicing or repairs.

Lesson learned: If you hear any steam escaping inside the BDB, unplug it, act immediately to repair and avoid further problems.

This machine is perfect for my needs, am familiar with how it works, and hopefully will serve me for 10+ years.

      • So you replaced it with the same machine? I currently have an Oracle and love it, I do wonder if I would 'upgrade' to another machine if it broke. I don't use the built-in grinder and auto-tamping (have a separate grinder) but I love the auto frothing feature, not sure I would ever give that up.

        • If it's from 2015 it was most likely the discontinued BES900.
The newer BES920XL has a few differences
-Old model couldn't be descaled as the boilers wouldn't fully drain, new one can
-Old one you couldn't adjust steam temp, new one you can
-Old model had volumetric shot control, new model can do volumetric or duration controlled.
May be some other differences with the new one that I've missed too.

Having the ability to descale should definitely help reduce stress on the system and make the newer 920XL model longer-lasting than the old one. Even getting the "same" model the changes are definitely decent.

        • Yes it was the same one (minor differences) - it was a BES920 purchased from the Good Guys.
There are some minor changes in the newer model with a different water filter, and inside they changed some of the connections into the top of the boilers.
Externally, the light has a bluer hue, the lights on the original one looked more warm.
The new machine has more aggressive power saving turning off after around 10 minutes but I think there is a setting to adjust this.

      • Can you give a bit more detail on what you do in terms of maintenance and how frequently? How often would you get it serviced, what does it cost?

        • +1

          Sure,

          Regular stuff
          1. Run the clean cycle when prompted (it is a tablet of detergent that sits on a rubber block). I usually flush the group and wash the water tank afterwards.
          2. Change filter every 3 months and wash the water tank thoroughly
          3. Flush the group after each extraction
          4. (Possibly controversial) Descale when it tells you to. (This has been a problem for some owners of the older machines, but I have not encountered a problem with it)

          Periodic stuff
I take it in for a service every 18-24 months: descale and new o-rings. Cant remember the exact cost but think this normally costs around $120

Stuff that broke in the past
          1. Around 3 1/2 years - steam wand was dripping water - needed a new steam valve
          2. Around 4 years pump stopped doing the low pressure preinfusion, max pressure reduced to 6-7 bar. (Replaced the pump with one from eBay for $35 with plenty of Youtube research, as we were in the first covid lockdown)
          3. Ignored steam escaping and needed service: descale, changed o-rings, triac board needed replacing, safety valve on the steam boiler needed replacing.

    • +1

And how many times have you run a full descale? Most people buy these things and forget to service then complain when it breaks after 18 months.

      • +1

Whenever the descale alert comes up on screen. Maybe once a year?

        • +1

Worth doing more often than that unless you are using very soft filtered water.
Recommended duration is 60 days for areas with very hard water - high mineral content, and 90 for normal.
This matches up pretty much exactly with the recommended lifespan of the claro-swiss filter, so I just do it when it's time to pop a new one in.

Definitely do not leave it a full year.

  • Love my dual boiler, at this price it's good going!

  • BDB owners, who are doing single cup a day. Do you empty steam boiler after use or doesn't matter?

    • +3

      Doesn't matter

    • How do you empty the steam boiler?

      • The current model has a bleed screw behind a rubber plug on the front panel. Older models you have to open it and disconnect a hose.

        • Oh yeah I know the one, I can't imagine you should be using that ever day, otherwise it's a pretty crappy design!

          • @bleeder: you definitely don't need to do that, plus you'd probably also be wearing out the bleed screw gaskets since they wouldn't be designed for you to open them daily.

    • +1

What do you mean by empty steam boiler, you mean the water inside the boiler? If so, only when you store the machine unused for extended period of time.

  • Maybe when my Bambino Plus dies…does the job for me

    • I already have the 920, after having the 900 for ages (~10 years).
I'm thinking of getting this for my parents so that when I visit their house and stay, I don't have to suffer bad coffee.

  • For the casual soy latte in the morning, is this an overkill? It would be just for me as well

    • +4

      Look at the bambino plus

    • +1

Just get the barista express or barista pro.

    • probably overkill, would mention that the steam want on the barista express is a bit lacking…

    • +5

I wouldn't call it overkill if you are interested in spending the time to learn how to make (near) perfect espresso. The lesser machines can only get you so far and before you know it you'll be buying a BDB anyway. Also if you don't care about perfection, BDB will still produce better coffee than a lesser machine if all other variables are kept the same.

Only thing to note is the BDB takes 10-15 mins to properly warm up

      • +1

lucky you can set the clock on it to auto start in the morning, I use that feature every day.

        • +1

Except that the latest models shut themselves off after 20 mins of inactivity to save power :(

As far as I know you can't disable the power saving setting on the AU spec machines

          • @fullspend: Yeah this is one of my only irritations, anyone know if it is possible to get around this?

  • finally a decent bargain for this machine, too bad mine isn't broken. Would've been a nice upgrade to a dual boiler

    • +2

We moved from a Barista Pro to the dual boiler and have no regrets whatsoever with the costs. Steaming milk whilst extracting is a luxury we didn't know we needed, plus the guage is super handy too

  • I've just inherited this machine. Any pro tips from newcomers?

    • +8

      Get a 0.1g scale.

      Get 1/2kg tub of Cafetto.

Get a decent grinder and buy fresh beans.

      Watch loads of YouTube videos.

Be prepared to spend some time practicing before you're making consistent coffees.

    • +1

Yeah I'd recommend getting a 0.1g scale also (can get cheap off amazon) and weighing the ground beans and then your shot as it comes out, I think the standard is 1:2 which would be something like 18g coffee and a 36g shot . I've set my 2 cup button to 35 seconds and I manually cut it off when it gets to the shot weight I am looking for (ideally between 25 and 35 seconds).

      • 25-35 seconds from pressing button or from first drip of coffee out?

        • +1

          from pressing button.

    • I found this cheap scale
I dont like the look and there is a little lag in the display but is only 25mm high still allows the bodum dual wall glasses to fit under the portafilter during extraction.
      https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B08H577V4T/

It was on special for $20.99 in 2021

I use this scale for beans (it is 30mm high so can only use it for extraction with an espresso cup/shot glass)
      https://www.amazon.com.au/Multi-Functional-Stainless-Chronog…

but it should be much cheaper than that

But my long term goal is to get a nicer scale like the acaia luna or a timemore nano that can do both.

  • +6
    • Erh. Meh. Gherd!!

  • Great deal. Thanks OP. Just bought one.

Any good tips on grinders? I'm looking for one to complement the dual boiler

  • Can't find any Adelaide stores with C&C (for the $100 store credit). A real bummer! 😟

  • this is a good price. i sold mine for $800 last year. should i buy one again………. no.

  • What about the oracle any deal for that

    • +2

      I heard it's not a better machine…
better save the money to get a good grinder… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/685305

      • Oracle is a good machine too for a specific type of user. It's basically the dual boiler machine plus inbuilt grinder, auto tamp function and has auto milk steaming function. Obviously carries a higher cost as a result.
Good for those that want a great coffee without taking up a new hobby.

Its been cheaper in the past but the most recent best deal on the Oracle was $2,201 plus mothers day promo i.e. including

2 Months of Veneziano Crave Blend Coffee Beans• Exclusive Live Roaster Online Masterclass• 2x Breville Dual Wall Latte Glasses (200ml)• 2x Breville Dual Wall Espresso Glasses (100ml)• 1x Breville Bean Keeper Coffee Cannister

        • +3

Oracle is good for people who wants to press a button and get cup of coffee and don't bother to learn about making coffee. On the flip side, if you pay $2400, you get ordinary / basic grinder, no pressure gauge, no control of the amount of coffee grind, no control of tamp (could lead to channelling), more things that could go wrong with the mechanical operation of the auto tamp. If grinder or machine breaks down then you have to replace both. It would be much better option to buy separate machine and quality grinder at overall cheaper price. If you have enough bench space it is a no brainer.

      • I found the in built grinder and tamping to be no good, extremely inconsistent shots, which was rectified when I got a separate grinder. For me I love the auto-frothing though, it does a decent job and makes the workflow a lot easier, would buy this machine again if anything happened and just not use the grinder. Shame you can't get one with auto frothing but no build in grinder.

Oh yeah, I got mine for about $700-$800 in a previous deal that involved JB HiFi vouchers, so ended up cheaper than the Dual Boiler!

        • The question would be, if you wanted a new upgrade later on, would you pay the $2400 for it? (not the $700-$800 you paid).

          • @huntabargain: Nah I wouldn't pay that much just to have the auto-frothing, I'd just deal with having to manually froth.

    • +1

      I have both
BES920 with the smart grinder and the Oracle touch.
If you simply want a good coffee without playing too much with the machine, then go with Oracle (pretty much full auto but with excellent frothing result)
If you would like to do your own tamping, froth milk the way you prefer, then you may want the BES920+smart grinder (costs is lower as this deal $900+ you got $100 credit, you can use it to buy the smart grinder, when it is on sale is approx $250) Total is under $1200. Compare to Oracle, even when a time they have a big sale on the discounted colour at one point of time, it was approx $1500+ but hard to come across.

      • A few months ago I got my Oracle for $700-$800 with a deal I got on OzBargain involving JB HiFi vouchers. This is the non-Touch version, but I prefer that anyway.

        • That's a bargain!

          • @JCRALLYART: I think I might be wrong actually, must have deducted the $300 I got from selling my old machine, I can't have been that cheap! lol

  • An excuse to upgrade. Thanks!

  • If you sign up free to Sunsuper/Australian Retirement Trust, you can also get 4% off The Good Guys giftcard. (save $35.96) not sure if can stack with this deal or not.

Side bonus, also get good guys commercial access.

  • How much better would this with a decent dedicated grinder be over the barista express?

    • +9

A grinder with this machine will take up more bench space, and require two power sockets so you need to see if that works for your space you have.

The grinder in the barista express has the same burr set as in the smart grinder pro, so even going with one of those puts the grind on par.

The BDB can extract coffee and texture milk more consistently than the barista express, with a heater on the group, together with inherent thermal stability with its cascaded dual boilers. Both have PID thermal control, but the barista express using a less thermally stable thermocoil system relies on this far more.

Compared to a barista express, the BDB coupled with a smart grinder pro (or better grinder e.g. DF64, Specialita, Niche Zero etc) you would be able to make more coffees in less time, with more consistent output.
Additionally, it has an easier workflow, without the cramped function of having anything packed into one machine, water level is clearly visible and can be filled from the front, as well as using the industry standard 58mm portafiler allowing for more options in baskets, distributors, tampers and so on.

TL;DR - BDB with the same or better grinder better workflow, more options, more consistent and faster coffee.

  • C'mon Good Guys - bring back a deal for the Barista Express!

    • Question - is the Barista express dual boiler ?

      • No it's not.

      • no, just need to either brew or steam.. not both
