Good Value Decent Winter Quilt as a Layered Backup

So it's been pretty cold in Sydney lately and it has made me realise I should maybe get another quilt for winter or at least invest in a backup so I can rotate some quilts while I wash some.

So what's everyone's go to quilt for winter

Or alternately which quilts do you recommend against

Also is there a difference in the naming of blanket and quilt or are they the same thing

I use a double bed but usually get a size larger just for that extra length

I'm just looking at big w, kmart and ebay for now but lots to choose from wondering if there is a brand or choice that performs above the rest and bonus if it is better value I.e cheap

others may not fond of , but i personally like using heated underblanket

i got mine from target for 30 bux , and only use the foot part, pulling 50w off the smart plug , turn on/off using voice through google mini, without having to move or open my eyes whilst on bed

    never use air heater since

    • I still have my heated blanket I bought years ago from kmart or big w i forgot which now and it is good but it felt a bit too intense on some areas and I really only used it on extreme cold nights when the temperature was unbearably too cold.

I cannot use it now one because taking it off and on is annoying and two because it takes up an extra plug on my power board which is all full now so I would only take it out as a last resort if more layers of blankets did not work but knock on wood that is an extreme case and probably would only happen if it snowed which who knows we might get an early snow up here in katoomba this year but usually the snow happens in june july or august in my limited experience up here.

      • Surely a bigger power board (or piggybacking two of them) to bring back the heated blanket is cheaper than another product.

Love my heated blanket, which has two halves (top and bottom) and 4 levels of intensity for each so if its not that cold can just leave it on #1

        • Don't want to push my luck I only have one outlet in my room and let's just say I have two power boards already daisied so a bigger one might be pushing it.

If I do plan to upgrade my pc that would be even more power pulling from the outlet so yeah definitely keeping this to two power boards to safe proof myself from trying to plug in more and pushing through the limit.

  • Very happy with the Kmart quilt (their warmest one - No. 3 warmth rating). Has kept me warm through many winters.

Their quilt covers are also perfectly fine but do avoid their cheap 100% polyester ones.

    • oh nice yeah kmart seems like the go to one for now.. do you have a link to the one you are talking about so i dont make a mistake or i can just take a stab at it.

I am using an ebay high gsm count one and a few kmart or big w ones right now i believe and they seem to be working fine.

      thanks for the recommendation.

      • I got mine in store. It's the High Warmth, regular quilt (they have/had more expensive goose feathers quilt which I didn't try). Cost me around $49, if I remember correctly.

        • What size was that

  • I had a kmart electric blanket (does a decent job) but it's not machine washable. My cat peed on it when I first got him and I had to chuck the whole thing out.
If you have (or are planning on having) pets or young kids maybe opt for one that is (that or grab a waterproof mattress protector). Machine washable electric blankets are not much more expensive. I got mine from catch with upsized cashback + gift card (from a woolies sale) which technically made it slightly cheaper than the Anko one. Even without the small discounts, imo $5 extra for peace of mind is worth it.

This will sound povo as it doesn't match the decor and looks odd, but I live alone now so what does it matter? I throw my winter sleeping bag on top of my summer sheets, and it keeps me warm AF. I paid like $250 for the sleeping bag, and that thing will keep you warm sleeping outside, so works great in the house. Not saying buy one, but if you think you will ever have need of one, it can double for the winter on top of your bed.

    • Lol I did something similar to this but it did not work out..

I tried sleeping in my sleeping bag with my blankets over me but I could not get comfortable with how claustrophobic and movement restricted I was in the sleeping bag I eventually gave it up after a few minutes and just went back to just my blanket.

Yeah I don't think I will ever have the need for a winter sleeping bag as I don't do camping or outdoors stuff or travel atm so just looking for maybe an extra quilt for now just can't decide which one.

      • Yeah, I tried that too, but my unzips so I can toss it over the bed like a blanket instead because getting inside is not comfy at all.

        • Oh that's a good idea actually I never thought of using it over my blankets kind of like a shield barrier of warmth.

I can see this being really useful maybe on those extreme cold nights..

Right now a heated blanket on top would be a bit over kill I would definitely be sweating when I wake up in the morning.

But cool idea of putting it on top instead of underneath.

Might try that maybe if I can figure out which power port to sacrifice.

  • I bought the 50/50 goose feather and down from target (their brand). $250 odd dollars well spent. Only need that one doona now instead of 2-3 doonas. I also use the to tontine heated topper and have a self-placing hot-water-cat under the doona most nights.
    Toastie warm.
