Comes with free encryption! (mandatory btc payment required for decryption)

    • Did they release the generic key to unlock it ? Mine was around $1.3k and i dont bother to send the btc lol

    • are they vulnerable to ransomware or something?

If you left it exposed to the internet many users had issues a while back. All seems sorted now.

This has much better hardware specs than the Synology equivalent, including 2.5gbe Lan compared to 1.

A new QNAP model is on the way which will have a bit stronger CPU and twice the expansion card speed.

      • YES - but to be fair Synology and recently Asus were also caught up in ransomware so it's not just QNAP.

    • You forgot the best part of owning a QNAP NAS! Guessing what feature they removed with the latest update.

Will it be your favourite 3rd party app? No, because they are mostly all gone now.

Will it be USB printing? Nope, that went several updates back.

Will it be support for Plex Home theatre? Nope, that's already gone too.

Perhaps Plex's own apps like QNotes or their Bittorrent client? Sorry, they killed those too.

It seems with every build they remove half a dozen or so apps and some feature because they found a security issue and either couldn't get the developer to fix it, or it couldn't be fixed.

I decided to upgrade to a dumb usb3.2 4x drive case and a nuc running windows to handle the software side.

No plex? There goes any reason for me

        • It still runs the server, if you download the .qpkg file directly from Plex… for now.

But if you bought a QNAP NAS with a video output, and paid dearly for it, the ability to use that video output for plex was removed.

Plus QNAP NASs are generally pretty bad at transcoding. Mine, a fairly old ARM variant, dies with a single 265 -> 264 video transcode and barely keeps up with a single 5.1 -> 2.0 audio transcode.

My NUC8i5 has no trouble with 2 simultaneous video transcodes.

Of coarse I don't have 2.5GBe, so if that's important this might be worth it to you.

But as a current QNAP owner, I don't recommend them.

        • I have one of these and it runs Plex very very well. It doesn't like huge (30GB+) x265 files and that's the only complaint I can think of. There's nothing the equivalent Synology box can do that this can't.

If you need more CPU power then wait for the new model but I suspect most people don't need more CPU power.

          https://nascompares.com/guide/qnap-ts-464-vs-ts-453d-nas-com…

Lot of people go nuts about how bad NAS specs are compared to desktops ('I could build a system five times as fast for less!') but they're overlooking the whole point of the things. You want the minimum specs needed to do everything you want. A NAS is designed to have low power use and run 24/7 relatively cheaply.

      • Perhaps Plex's own apps like QNotes

I meant "Perhaps QNAP's own apps like QNotes…"

  • This or Synology DS 922+ when it comes out?

    • +1

Ds922+ is much more better imho

      • Funny, the 922+ hasn‘t even come out yet. It’s already a win? Rumour has it that it will switch to ryzen 1600 which might be considered a downgrade for some people. And mostly likely no 10Gb Ethernet.

        • Also no iGPU on the Ryzen 1600 so good luck with transcoding Plex

    • Synology by a mile. Their nas apps are amazing.

  • ouch ..this kind of prices and losing 3rd party apps… that m-itx Nas build is looking like the way to go for me.
