Was in the market for a 2-bay NAS that I can use to backup to Cloud storage, and this was the cheapest option for a decent brand. This is a basic NAS, but note that some higher end ones from TerraMaster are also 20% off.

  • At the risk of stating the obvious, 1GB of RAM makes these things struggle a bit.

If you are just using it for file storage, it's tolerable.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect too much. I just need to replace my WD MyBook that's just hit 10 years. For simple central file storage it should be fine.

It'll be fine for a NAS. The problem is people use the term NAS now but they mean anything from media server to full blown home lab running hypervisor, VMs etc, moonlight, before you know it the NAS is a 16 core Ryzen with a RTX5070 in there so they can game remotely from the office or train…

Hey! That's my NAS you're talking about!
          ;)

    • I can't speak for this CPU/OS combo but I for a while i used a 2 bay AS1102T with 1GB RAM and its better than you would think. It actually ran the household Plex (small library), had our shared drive and acted as an Apple Time Machine backup.

It was simple to use, sipped 6-10W, drives were in RAID and I didnt have to invest much time into it or install an OS.

Forget docker or VMs, not enough memory or power.

  • 1GB/s Ethernet.

    Press X to doubt…

    • Woops, thanks for pointing out. Fixed.

  • Pity they don't have any PRO's in stock / on sale

  • I've been using a Synology 218+ from around 2019.
Disks started running out of space. Had to buy 2 bigger disks to replace. Made me realise it would've been cheaper longer term to get a 4 bay at the start.

This is a good price for someone wanting to get a ready to go NAS for cheap (just supply your own disks)

Considering the low RAM, might be worth putting DietPi OS (https://dietpi.com/). Which comes with installers for most common NAS apps too, unlike TOS5 (assuming this won't have TOS6).

[Not sure if I'll be bothered saying this in every TerraMaster deal, but again: highly recommend not using default TerraMaster OS (which is called TOS).]

  • If this was for 4 bays i bite
