yeah but Melbourne tap water tastes fine to me so just drink it from tap. if it filters water from like a stream, waterfall and so on that would be awesome as can take it with me on hikes

        • +2

I live in Melbourne as well. I drank tap water for years and thought it tasted just fine, until I used a filter and compared the result. The unfiltered water tasted rusty, it was night and day.

          • +1

@rustyhead: yikes that's not good, rust is a bit of a concern in regards to rusty pipes, might need to have a look as I have tasted filtered water and bottled water and to me tap water was best.
Went to Qld and felt sick drinking from tap even the bottled water in Qld tasted bad, only reason didn't want to live there

@michael9865: Tip from traveller: Water tastes different - everywhere! Even in same city.

We get used (habituate) to what we regularly drink, so are often aware of any difference. Even if the new water is better quality.

My degree covers water quality - did a fair bit of testing.

Considering most bottled water is from outside QLD, strange it tastes "bad" to you!

              • @INFIDEL: didn't try every bottle water lol, just tried like 2 different brands from Coles up there, to expensive to always drink bottled water.
Also bad as in I don't like the taste not that there is anything wrong with it

                • @michael9865: Some people just can't handle difference! Home is where the heart is.

Its amazing how our perceptions & beliefs can overrule our senses!!
And how a simple thing like taste can vary widely between individuals.
Confirmation Bias can help us believe what we want to believe.
It's something I've seen in testing & travel.

Best to stay home if that's the case😉

I prefer to experience more than I am already used to, so travel widely in areas unaccustomed to "Foreigners", & drink deeply. (Safely. But rarely bottled water!)

@INFIDEL: yeah true, was born in Sydney, grew up Hobart, now live in Melbourne, never had a problem with tap water until I got to Qld

@michael9865: Tap water in Melbourne is best. If you want to spend money, there will be some products out there you can buy that doesn't make any difference.

                  • @[Deactivated]: Not best in Australia - according to water authorities & testing panel.

@INFIDEL: It's like people in every country think they are the best. I am not saying other water doesn't taste good. I'm just saying you don't have to buy a silly product if you live in Melbourne. Tap water is the best.

                      • +1

@[Deactivated]: True. Tap water is highly regulated & tested. Few places require a bottled water alternative. Stick with tap water!

Whereas, refillable water bottles & filters could be unsanitary if not used properly!

Melbourne has very soft water, meaning less minerals, resulting in better taste water.

          • @mrgeckoz: Yes, soft water has a better mouth feel. That is very different to harder water, so can be subjectively interpreted as tasting better. Depends a lot on what taster is used to.

Supply water (in dams & rivers), in some of QLD has a higher clay content. The fine colloidal clay particles are electrically charged & won't settle out over days like many other areas. So treatment may be different & likely the water has a higher mineral content.

Of course higher mineral content is considered to be healthier in some cultures.

But some mineral content can impart an odour & taste. I've drunk high mineral content waters at the source at places like Bath in UK - not nice! And bore water here can be an acquired taste.

  • Whats the difference between adventure filter and fitness filter

    • Marketing terms. Why they sell hundred types of running shoes or mobile phones?

    • +3

      From the site:

Fitness Filter 3-pack AWP287/79 features innovative activated carbon fibre to remove up 99%* of chlorine and other taste impairing substances from tap water without compromising the water flow.

Adventure filter gives you assured water by removing up to 99.999%* waterborne pathogens including bacteria, viruses and cyst. It also reduces particulates, chemicals and heavy metals, as well as improving the taste and clarity.

So fitness filter is fine for safe tap water and that's it. Adventure if your water source is more suspect and can't be boiled I guess.

  • Mildura has stock apparently.

  • does it actually do anything? don't philips make TVs and LED lights lol

    • They have tap filters, electronic toothbrush, shaver, etc.

      • Medical equipment , Theatre lights

    • You can ask to do a web order and pay $10 do be delivered to your home I just ordered 4 like that

  • Reviews are bad, it doesn't seem to actually filter
