Feedback on Report

I have, over the past few days/weeks/months, used the report function in relation to occasional articles and/or individual posts. I don't go back to see the results, because I don't keep track of what I've reported.

Would it be possible to get some feedback after reporting something? That is, along the lines of "Thank you for your report on…., we have taken down the offending post", or alternatively "Thank you for your report on…. We have decided not to take any action on this occasion, because…".

That is, giving the reporter a feel for what the site administrator will act upon, and what they won't.

I know there are rules, but there are often grey areas - I want to know if I'm just creating spam, or if I'm actually doing something useful with those twenty reports/day.

Any chance of such feedback as a result of reports? Or are there just too many reports? If the latter, even an automated accept/reject email will at least give some indication of whether the reporter is in tune with the community's views.

  • Once upon a time the thanks was given, but not the last few times I have reported something.

You read that and forgot the first sentence?

I should point out that billions of people would tell you I never exaggerate.

I reported the dodgy link on this deal….

    (arnt i special)

    • Fixed. Thanks for the report. We get up to 100 reports a day, so I'm not sure about feedback other than checking the original thread reported. I'll bring it up for discussion with the other moderators/devs.

      • You're welcome

  • Oh and I should say, feel free to use the report button as much as you like. It doesn't SPAM us. They are all listed in one page that we check regularly.

    • Thanks. Your comments do make me feel a little more relaxed about using the report function. Not 20 times a day (normally), but when I think it's important.

It would still be useful to get even an automated notification that your report has been accepted/rejected. Just to get an idea of whether one is being useful or in some cases taking things to extremes.

Some people have too much time on their hands. The mods don't have time to say thank you every time you 'report' something. Feeling a bit unworthy are we lol <— Report me XD

  • @Postulative — thanks for the feedback.

First of all, most moderators are on volunteer basis, and they can't cover 24x7. Most might just come into OzBargain, see the list of reported items, clean up the site a bit, click on the "Resolved" button on the reports and move on. As Neil has said, we do receive quite a lot of reports reach day so it would not be feasible for each mod to respond to each individual reports.

We will need to design a system to automate the response to the original reporter — either the report has been actioned, or seen but ignored, or any other notes that need to passed back.

    • That could get annoying for those that arnt reporting for the glory though…

Dont really care either way though..

      • Won't be much glory. When I said automate the response, the response notifies the reporter only and won't show in public.

  • I see a potential issue here. Someone might report another for what they perceive is an inappropriate comment, which gets rejected by the mods. Then the reporter is pissed off even though they would have forgotten about the incident.

    • If it's the case, they need to seek clarification from mods using TWAM.

As of today, there is new functionality that allows a moderator to provide optional feedback to the reporter. The feedback is sent via the private messaging system.

We will be trialing this, at the moment we may not be sending feedback for every report as it may spam the reporter too much (say, if reporter reports multiple comments per thread).

    • Sounds good guys:).
