  • According to http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/pc-peripherals/notebook-p…
screen res is only 1366*768. Is this an issue? Pity no usb 3.0 either.

      • +17

It doesn't say USB 3.0, it says "3 USB 2.0". This means it has 3 ports that are USB 2.0.

        My bad,
I was looking at BLUETOOTH ….. doh

  • +1

    Just purchased thanks for this.

they had this laptop for $499 3 months ago, so price has gone up?

    • No they didn't, I think you must have it confused with some other product.

    • +2

      http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/pc-peripherals/notebook-p…

This is the one they had a few months ago.

      • -6

the model you have linked is different to this model.

mainly diff videocard, hard drive size, optical drive and ram.

        • +1

Indeed, which is why it was sold at $499 a few months ago as states.

      • +1

yes ur correct sorry my bad

  • +1

If it was USB 3.0, I would be all over this.

    • I got over my issues and bought it. I don't think there is much that comes close to this price with this many features.

    • Does this come with an expansion slot of some sort? In which case you can probably get a 2xUSB 3.0 card for like $20, making this deal worth it seeing you probably wouldn't you that's slot for anything else anyway :)

Though it appears it doesnt =/

  • Looks good, almost tempted since I'll need something soon. But aren't the array of present laptops about to be superseded by Ivy Bridge? And won't the price come down even more for 'old' technology? Just asking.

Yes, pity about the missing USB 3.0

    • This… I think you are on the money but for someone who doesn't need such a powerful laptop and doesn't mind the price then it could be worth it.

    • Apparently not, there is no need for sandy bridge cpu's go lower in price as they are still in demand. This is intel marketing though it might lower by $10 until it's all gone. But since you might be comparing ivy bridge to amd cpu's, doubtful as intel are still leading and are the prefered.

Samsung is high priced… is there any justification for charging so -much- for an AMD (read: cheaper) CPU, that's [reportedly] -like- an Intel i5 (but not the i7)?

Its -lower- screen resolution & USB 2.0 ports combine to -date- this relic. It's price should be maybe $599 or even less today.

RAM is cheap… 1 TB HD is fast becoming cheaper… do we really need 2 GB in a notebook?

It -does- save you the trouble of upgrading, if you -had- any reason for 8 GB, other than pride. ;-)

    • +9

hey IVI, you know you can use one set of asterix's (surrounding text) to italic and double *, to Bold

See you use -often-, just replace with a *.

      • +2

        test
        test

        cool… thanks for that :).

        • Checks UFO's comment history.

No italics or bolds. LOL nice work!

    • Is there anything wrong with an i5? An i5 will won't make difference to an i7 in terms of gaming. Though i'm unsure about amd cpu's, but it seems to be clocked at lower speeds… But you can't really go wrong with a samsung and i agree about quad core AMD CPU, they are cheaper then i5's

    • "that's [reportedly] -like- an Intel i5 (but not the i7)?"

      Pure nonsense.

It's slower than the slowest i3.

      • +1

Probably gonna sound like a jerk now for this, but

Convention is that write quotes like this, with a '>' at the start of the line

      • +1

        Pure nonsense.

It's slower than the slowest i3

        I thought so too

  • +7

i've got this laptop and tbh its not very good. crashes all the time and within a few weeks it started lagging as hell.

  • +7

Why do laptops still have to have crappy 1366*768 resolution? :(

    • Sucks for watching 1080p and working, but might actually be an advantage in some games, higher detail settings and/or better framerates.

    • +1

'Cause low resolution screens are cheaper and most consumers don't have enough clue to know what resolution is and won't pay more to get it.

  • +2

    there's a similar laptop at harvey norman ringwood.it's an hp dv6-6c04ax for $750, $50 more (8gb ram, A8-3550MX 2.0ghz, ATI 7690M (basically a rebranded 6750M)), 640gb hd

  • +1

    Hmmm there is no ATI HD6690G on http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark… ( however a AMD Radeon HD 6690G2 #128 )

and the CPU rank #147 from http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist…
not much detail about other stuff…
EDIT: need more detail about RAM, network connection speed, USB version, HDD speed. But if you gonna buy this laptop for general use then it might be a good choice.

  • +1

I purchased this laptop about this time last yr only with Intel i7 as the only difference (i think) for $1100 at clive peters. Excellent laptop, one of the best things I have ever purchased. 5/5!

  • whatever it is…. seems like a much better deal than the 1/2 price promotion at HN… XD

  • +4

The CPU is the equivalent of a low level i3, the graphics is mediocre… there's really nothing worthwhile here. It looks good, but when you follow up it really isn't.

  • just wondering if anyone knows anything about windows 8. Can anyone have a guess if this could potentially run windows 8 when it comes soon. Just that i would hate to buy it if win 8 requires a more powerful machine…IF anyone thinks it can, i would get this for sure!

    • It'll run Windows 8. A 4 year old notebook would run Windows 8.

      • thanks !

  • only 3 available?

  • +2

No deal, considering i picked up a Intel i7 2630QM, 8GB RAM for $599 and that was last December! And I think mine would blow the socks off this AMD laptop. Only extra thing this has is a blueray drive, which is no use to me since I don't even own any blueray disks. And I put the extra $100 towards an SSD upgrade!

    • It was a Lenovo rite?

    • What was the video card in your unit?

  • +3

"AMD CPU is similar to Intel i5"

Yes, in the same way that a Hyundai Excel is very much like a Ferrari 458 Italia; apart from in every single detail:
    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

You can see the A8-3550MX (essentially the same) on that list, 10 places from the bottom.

The equivalent Intel would be an i3 2100.

    • +2

For accessing Facebook, watching RedTube and reading emails, they're indistinguishable.

      • Not in a year's time they won't be.

I'm talking about value and future-proofing here.

I've got a much better laptop @myers from a another post last month. This is no bargain,

    • +1

The HP one if I recall correctly?

    • Link?

      • Found the unit he mentions in a previous post:

        http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/67587

Seems it had a much better CPU (i7), half as much RAM, 750gb HDD, 1gb dedicated video card and no blu-ray combo drive.

    • +2

      Oh god, not another one.

  • The good is 8gb, quad core with turbo. The not so good is the

    1 low Rez screen
2 slow hd, get a SSD or segate XT 750gb - either will make a huge difference with a clean install
3 NO BACKLIT KEYBAORD this is a big deal and should be standard on ANY LAPTOP

I got a similar spec HP from the weekend 50% sale with 8gb for a little less at @ $545.00

Put a XT500gb I had spare and a clean install of win7 and it rocks for the bucks, very happy with it but then it's not for me!
