Opel FlipPhone XL 4G $99 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Harvey Norman

130

While I don't think the OzBargain community is the market audience for "dumbphones", there might be one or two of you here who are:

  • looking to be less distracted by their phones;
  • getting a phone for the digital luddite in your life; or
  • want to become a dumbphone hipster like me.

I've personally been waiting for a Nokia 2760 Flip, but at this price hopefully this will scratch that flip phone/T9 nostalgia and also act as a WFH phone for all my work calls.

See review of the phone by an Australian dumbphone enthusiast here and here.

I'm also looking for a dumb phone, but not at this price tag :-(

If you're willing to buy used, I saw this on eBay which is probably similar-ish to the FlipXL, bar some minor gripes and in an older and smaller package.

they're oddly expensive, back in the 2g days there really cheap.

      • because they are still 4G phones, sadly. it's basically just a stripped down smartphone with a physical keypad, it's not a true dumbphone, as it is not 2G, or even 3G. you can't get a real dumbphone anymore because they shut those networks down.

2G phones were actually limited in their capabilities by the technology, whereas these phones are artificially limited, if you wanted to you could modify it and unlock more capabilities, or even flash a completely different OS onto the device if it is compatible with the hardware (there is at least one custom OS that is compatible with a phone that comes with KaiOS by default, i think its one of the nokia 4g flip phones)

        • I thought 2G 3G 4G are just different connection types.
Like my desktop with different network cards using different technologies: LAN, Wifi B, G, N, AC,…
or like my laptop with different USB versions: A, B, C, Thunderbolt,…

When the technology is new, it is expensive (like 3G phones in the first days of 3G, 4G phones in the first days of 4G). Now 4G is already matured, the price for "4G" should be low

I bought my mum the Opel Big Button X, which would be similar in software to this phone. The UI is rubbish to the point where the simplicity of a dumb phone is negated by the poor usability of the UI.

For example, this is the power off sequence:
    1. Hold the power button down for a long time
    2. Menu shows up asking if you want a reboot or a power off
    3. Menu asks you if that is OK

Sounds simple enough, but for my elderly mum it's a nightmare.

Furthermore, don't buy from Harvey Norman. Gerry is a POS human being. Get it from a post office instead.

    • "are you sure?"
      "are you really sure?"
that would be annoying AF for anyone.

    • Power off exactly the same as my Sammy S7 Edge.
