How Do You Clean Your Bicycle?

I was waiting to get Aldi's cleaning supply but looks like that will not arrive.
I was just curious how do you do basic cleaning of your bike and chain? What product do you use? Can i get something from bigw or kmart ?

    I use a hose and wd40

Please don't use WD40. It will clean away all the lubricants in any bearings.

It was a joke, wd40 is a degreaser of course you cant use it for lubrication.

There is a specific type of wd40 that you can use on bike chains though

      • WD40 is the business for making a titanium frame look brilliant. Was originally developed for use on USA missiles to prevent corrosion of titanium.
Water Displacement40(th formulation) according to Dr Goggle

      • Unless you use something like WD40 White Lithium of course.

        • Unfortunately they’ve now got WD40 as a product brand rather than a single product. Just muddies the waters because WD40 has become something everybody knows what it (used to be)

No sure what's wrong with this comment??

I use wd40 to get rid of all the gunk and grime on the chain, and degrease. Then after cleaning, I re-lubricate using chain oil.

They were joking, and even if they weren't, they didn't mention anything about relubricating afterwards.

        Always lubricate!

Chain oil? Not the best product. Chain lube is more often a wax based substance. Oils attract dirt.

I leave it outside and let the stray 🐕 and 🐈 🚿 it down.

Car wash, gentle hose off, don't use a pressure washer if you value your bearings. There is a good YouTube clip: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=B2sKhSDrugE
Clean the chain with an orange based detergent, using a dedicated chain cleaner, rinse with water, dry with cloth, re-oil link at a time. Remove excess oil with a soft, lint free cloth. https://youtu.be/MuwS_nSevy4

cloth with detergent for main cleaning, but use 2 toothbrushes taped together with bristles facing each other for chain cleaner

    • 2 toothbrushes taped

I almost bought the Aldi chain cleaner but decided I didn't need more plastic crap in my life. This idea is genius!!

      • The Aldi cleaner is very similar to the Park Tool chain cleaner, which does a great job.

Cyclist I know, would remove the chain, clean with solvent, used an ultrasonic cleaner with warm water and a little detergent, dry and then soak the chain in light machine oil. Drained excess oil, wiped clean and reinstalled. His bikes ran like Swiss watches but he was OC in maintenance.

        • Yeah holy shit, thats overkill lol.

        • Or dip in hot wax…..

  • I just wipe it down. It gets covered in sawdust a lot. I should really make a dedicated bike shed for it.

Get a large plastic bag for a bike cover. I use the polythene bags or new mattress and base were delivered in. Cut to fit. They are heavy duty and free.

      • Brilliant idea. That will stop the rain getting to it, too (it rains a little in my garage)

my bicycle takes care of itself

  • Garden hose and a non-wax car wash.

For the chain, just get some degreaser and then reapply lube after bike dries.

  • Cleaning method varies with what’s being cleaned.

WD40 is not a suitable lubricant for bikes. It’s too thin. Great for cleaning though as it dissolves grease well and isn’t as harsh as some other stuff. Just don’t get it in your brakes. I use WD40 cleaning up crusty old chains as well, prior to using a proper lubricant.

Mud and stuff, gentle (low pressure) hose off brush with a soft brush. dustpan brush works well. Soft cloth at times too. Don’t hose directly into bearings etc. maybe some car wash if I want it particularly clean, but not normally.

For the chain I just use rock n roll lubricant. Can’t be bothered doing the whole degrease thing. Rock n roll gets dribbled on, then wiped off off. Supposedly cleans and lubes in one go. Have had no reason to try anything different as it works well and is quick and easy.

My bikes get used and are not show queens.

    • WD40 is not a suitable lubricant

WD40 is not a lubricant at all!

    • Remember to wipe it all off, all of it…….. 😀

I hose mine down and use a dustpan brush. After that coat the chain, derailleurs and quick release levers in WD40, before wiping dry.

I typically re oil the chain before going for a ride.

  • Thanks a lot. That is very helpful

  • Ultrasonic cleaner, Metho, crock-pot and molten wax.
