Giving Stuff Away on Marketplace

Finally, after over 6 months, I managed to give away a dining table in good used condition on Marketplace this morning. Seamless process. It feels great on two fronts - living sustainably and having a bit more space in the garage. Earlier in the year it was a futon.

There were a couple of false leads before, but it hardly wasted any time other than replying.

Luckily I didn't buy a lot of heavy furniture in the past so there's not much more of this to give away and live a minimalist lifestyle. But I have older friends that are downsizing with a lot of solid wood antiques who have a much harder time dealing with it.

What have you gotten rid of recently?

The solution to neighbour disputes is to photograph garden ornaments in your neighbour's front yard and post to Marketplace as free to collect.

My problem is that I hold onto stuff in my garage thinking "That is worth something, I should sell on scumtree/EBay" then I let it sit in there for years and then just throw it out in hard rubbish. Sometimes it gets picked up, sometimes not.

I have a big portable air-con unit that cost $600-700 back in the day. I often feel like putting up an add that is like "Air-con unit $100 if you take as is, if I plug it in and it still works, $250."

    • Moving a lot sorts that out haha. I spent 5 years selling shit on the side, a garage full from a move as we had to put a car in there, it was pretty much a conga line of beer money, I had accumulated so much stuff, even when we moved out I still had a massive garbage pile

  • Alright I guess I gotta get on gumtree and find some furniture to restore.

Need to furnish the other living room haha.

I have given away quite a few things. bluetooth keyboards, old film and video cameras.

I also gave/sold things by donation for the 2019/2020 bush fire appeal. they donate the amount and come pick up the items some people still gave me the money. I manage to donate (directly and indirectly) $460.

I have also benefited from free stuff from fb marketplace as well

      My personal favourite is.
"Will it fit in my car, its a -insert car model here-"

How the hell should I know if it will fit in your car? Maybe you should look at the measurements and figure it out yourself.

I had one where I sold something assembled and said in the ad that I will not help disassemble if it doesn't fit. I had a guy call me a couple of times on it, agreed to price and told him he'll need a trailer to take as is, or he'll need to disassemble which could take 15-20 minutes which I won't help with. He agreed and said it'll be no problems as he has a big trailer that he'll drive around. We agree on a time, then his wife turns up in the small SUV 2 hours late and asks me to help her disassemble it. I said no and she had a bit of a silent tantrum and was making out like she was going to leave and scuttle the whole deal. I said that is fine, this is a good deal and I'll find another buyer. 1 phone call later her husband came down with the trailer within 15 minutes. Some people….

Donate to charity…thats been our solution

      • Vote for donations.
I feel compelled however to mention that a number of well intentioned people donate things that aren't really fit for sale (Can only assume this is how giving it away first comes to mind)

Donate, but make sure it's in good knick.

    • Tried that… The Driver was very selective and wanted 1/2 the dining setting and much of what we were giving away was only few yrs old.

      • I put out a bunch of old dining chairs in hard rubbish. The ones that cost the most and in the best condition were left on the sidewalk and never picked up. While the cheapo ikea ones left the sidewalk immediately. I assume this is due to being able to return old ikea furniture to them for cash (i couldn't be bothered figuring out that game).

  • So much. For small stuff I post on Marketplace and local groups with a pic of it sitting outside. Usually gone in an hour.

  • Donating clothes to charity bins.

    • Unfortunately most of them get cut up for rags. They don’t actually get given to poor ppl

Better to drop off at op shop. They'll give you an indication if it can be resold or you should take home and use as rags.

Was selling a cordless phone set for $5. Was asked "What is your best price".

    • +2

When ppl ask me this, I literally reply with the price listed lol, or to be smart, i increase the price

In my experience, if I post anything as free, there will be hundreds and hundreds of replies. I once listed lot of decorative stones that was in my garden in marketplace which was picked up by folks within half a day. One person had the audacity to question me why I did not hold it for her because she happens to be in the hospital during the day and I should have prioritised her for that matter… <- wtf

My friend told me he once had a cat litter box listed for $5 and not a single response and he just made it free pickup so it wont end up in recycle bin and what do you know, over 50 something people wanting it within the hour

    • +1

question me why I did not hold it for her

Like the times I go for a walk a few days before council clean up and see useful things thrown out - e.g. GUC brand name pram. I post it and say not mine, no holds, on my local community group and it gets to Marketplace. And I get asked to hold by a few people or keep parts for them.

I moved interstate within the last 7 months..

I joined a local pay it forward group on Facebook and a lot of people were happy to take things off my hands. They were pretty reliable people who were stoked get things for free.

I had a funny moment with a free sign though. I'd scored a free imac, intended to fix it up and use it but I never did. So I tried putting it out the front with a free sign on it. No one took it.. so I put it on Facebook marketplace and had multiple people try to claim it. I gave it to the first dude who picked it up within 20 minutes. The amount of people who offered me money to hold it until they got there was bonkers.

  • Outdoor blinds. Replaced with motorised zip track ones

  • I have sold a few little items, few are free. One thing that's a bit frustrating is giving you the cash less than the posted price.

I advertised some small pot plants for free, I am in Western Sydney, got a message from someone asking if I could deliver one 100mm pot to Newcastle and then help them plant it in the ground. They also asked if I could bring some soil as well.

I guess they didn't think that this 400km round trip would take me the best part of a whole day to deliver and plant a small free pot plant.

    Mint $50 board game
    Put online for $15
    "Will you deliver"
    "No"
    whine whine whine
"No, actually, I don't want to find a box and padding and tape and print a label and wrap something up and then travel to the post office and stand in line just to send it to you somewhere else in Canberra to make a lousy $15"
Guy said he would collect after all
Arrived, met him in the driveway (he was on time and texted on the way, the only positive of this transaction)
Driving a nice Volvo wagon with ski racks, nice brand name puffer jacket, Apple watch
"I only have a $10 note, it's OK to take it for this price"
    "Who are you, Derren Brown"
    "This is all I have"
    "Thanks for coming"
    $20 note miraculously appeared
"Does that ever work out for you"
"I just think I should get a discount because you live so far away"
    "Where do you live"
    "Red Hill"
One of Canberra's most prestigious suburbs, a generous 20 min drive

    • Yeah I had a guy do that to me but before pickup. He was already paying a high price for a Telstra modem anyway but it’s their choice to hop in a car and buy the product, we shouldn’t be expected to pay their fuel haha

  • I listed some speakers on marketplace once that were cosmetically damaged. I didn’t think they would go for much so I listed them for $20. They were good speakers - 3 way - quite sizeable but I’d never seen the brand again, ‘Linear Acoustics’, from the mid 80s. Anyway, my inbox absolutely blew up and as a result I hiked the place to $200 as I needed the money for a concert. Someone paid it and was very happy, they bargained me to $150 as there was a slight tear in one of the cones that I didn’t notice but it didn’t affect them; they were going to rip them out anyway. Got some people abusing me for hiking the price after I found out they were worth more - the entitlement is hilarious

I demand you sell me your personal property at a price that i want!

  • +1

Join your local 'Buy nothing' group on Facebook. For me, I would rather give something <$20 away for free and feel better for it; less hassles, the item gets a new life, no haggling, buyer goes away feeling great too. The people you come across when you sell something for cheap (but not free) is not worth the hassle IMHO

I listed an electric lawnmower, with its specifications, including the 6 height adjustments.
Muppet asked me "Will this, OR ANY LAWNMOWER, cut my taller grass?"
