Is VA Platinum Worth It Anymore?

I am currently VA platinum and will remain that way until the end of February next year.

At this stage I don’t have a lot of travel booked between now and then but the booked trips and potential trips won’t get me the 800 SCs to retain platinum.

So I am contemplating an early status run before June 30 to take advantage of the double credits available. However I’m not sure if platinum is worth it under VA2.0 so would welcome any thoughts.

  • what is VA Platinum?

    • Highest tier of the Velocity Frequent Flyer program.

      • I used to be when I had to travel twice a month for work, this gets old super quick especially if you have a Family. but it was a little bit of luxory it what became a soul sapping grind.

        • I used to be when I had to travel twice a month for work……

How is it that you "used to be" when you didn't even know what it was? lol

The only status benefits that are actually valuable (at least IMHO) is lounge access and priority access to reward flights. How valuable are these to you? Basically, I would say airline status is not inherently worth anything unless you do a lot of flying in Y and have a use for the lounge access, or have a lot of Velocity points that you want to use.

    • For us it's mainly lounge access and Economy X seating. Have never used priority access as there are 8 of us and you can only apply it to 4 tickets.

  • Is there a concept of lifetime silver/gold like at qantas? If you are close, you can aim for that.

  • Depends on your travel habits but no significant benefits right now IMHO. The only one that's somewhat special is the ability to access the Etihad First lounge at Abu Dhabi, which is a massive step up from the contract lounge golds get.

If I were you I'd let the platinum soft land to gold, then see if you can either maintain gold or reach platinum again in the next 12 months - by swinging between platinum and gold soft landings, you ease the pressure to fly every second year

Yeah, I had considered that. I'm waiting to see the details of the partnership with UA as we travel to the US quite frequently but with the demise of VA's PE service on the 777, I'm not sure I want to fly on UA metal unless Y+ is part of the deal.

  • Or get the Amex platinum charge and get free VA lounge access for you and your supps with a guest each.

No priority check in our boarding though
