Swapping from Natural Gas to Bottled Gas on Weber

We have just moved and at our old residence we had natural gas from an attachment on the outside wall.

Our new place doesn't have natural gas and so we need to convert to bottled gas.

I rang Weber HQ and they said they can send me a conversion kit for $40 – happy days.

The problem is they will only send the kit once I provide them with the serial number of the Weber 200 Q.

The serial number is located either under the plastic side plates (which were terrible so I threw them away ages ago) or in the manual which has been lost to the ravages of time.)

Long story short (too late) I now have a seemingly useless pile of metal and plastic once know as my Weber Q.

Please tell me I have options here? Might a plumber be able to fit something up for me? Another trade perhaps?

HQ told me it's the law to require the serial number. My hope is it's a law more akin to not removing fire safety tags from mattresses..

Thanks.

P.s If it's relevant we live in Melbourne.

Gas is way more dangerous than a matress. I takkle many critical situations but Gas hey I have seen accidents beyond one's belief.
We weaned ourselves off flame BBQ's and feel healthier since!

  • Can you just purchase a conversion kit from a Weber dealer bricks and mortar store?

  • They are worried that you will fit the wrong size orifice - the sizes change from model to model and even different years of the same model.
If you fit the wrong size you may cause a fire or explosion - they are avoiding liability by asking for the serial number to work out the correct size for you.

Take the LNG ones out and go to a BBQs Galore or similar and they should be able to help.

No, it’s because they are the sole authorised distributor in Australia
It’s actually a separate company that uses the Weber name under licence. They want the serial number because that will indicate that it’s Australian version.
These grills are cheaper overseas. They don’t want to help owners of gray market grills convert them, as this would hurt their own interests. (Technically you can only use Australian regulated gas products in Australia)

OP just needs to find a matching serial number somewhere. Or take it to a gas heater/plumber repair shop to change the gas nipples/regulator over

Sell it on gumtree and buy a new one? Will likely cost more but will be a lot simpler.

You could probably see if the people who moved into your old place are interested, for one.

Go into a store and get yourself a new serial # from a one on sale

But head office will know that that unit has yet to be sold and will get angry at op.

      • Buy it… use serial… then return… ?

      • Doubt that. What are they going to do anyway, NOT sell Arthur his rightful sword in the stone??

    • if it's not a typo but actual q200 then bad luck because it's very old model, even secondhand store struggles to have stock.

  • Surely someone here with a natural gas model can give you their serial number

We had a LPG Weber and wanted it hooked up to natural gas.
Authorised Weber dealer would not sell us the simple adapter, rather we went through a licensed plumber.
