Bangkok 12 Hours Layover - Any Suggestion?

Hi all,

During my upcoming holiday, in my return flight, I have a 12 hours of layover at Suvarnabhumi Airport at Bangkok. I will arrive Bangkok at 5 AM, and my flight to Sydney is in the evening 5 pm.

I found very cheap deal (using Qantas vouchers) for day use hotel (9 am to 5 pm) at Novotel Bangkok Platinum Pratunam Hotel. Which is 30 km away from airport but cheaper than buying a 2 hours lounge pass at airport.

Any recommendations for some good sightseeing places?

I have heard about terrible traffic issues in Bangkok, so probably thinking of taking a Metro between City & Airport.

Is there any recommendation for cheap Covid insurance (which is mandatory) for 12 hours? As it is unlikely I will be hospitalised for Covid during 12 hours.

I’d stay at a hotel next to the airport, there are lots of nice ones, by the time you clear customs and get BTS to city hotel it will be 730 and you will be exhausted, and you will need to leave to go back to airport at 1-2pm there isn’t really enough time to use city hotel and for sightseeing.

I will only have a backpack, so I assume custom wouldn't take long. However, I take your suggestion to leave the hotel 1ish pm

Maybe a ferry ride to the grand palace.

Unsure what customs and immigration are like ATM, but I have never taken more than 30 minutes from getting off the plane to being outside the airport.

    • Tired. It's a holiday just pop some red bulls and enjoy.

I was just in Bangkok last week. Ensure you do the paperwork for a Thai pass otherwise you won't be allowed into the country. I wasn't checked too closely for the details on my insurance, but you just never know what happens on the day. The Thai pass covers your vaccination and health insurance.

Would recommend the metro. It's probably a 30-40 min journey on the metro and its 35 baht vs 500baht in a taxi/grab. Hopefully your airline through checks your bag to Sydney so you won't need to pick up and take to the hotel.

    • Thanks, yes, both flights are Thai Airways, on same PNR. so the bags will be checked in till Sydney.

One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
Can't be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me

Traffics, not too bad, however the train is very easy and cheap
Ferry trip on the river is nice. Stop at the dawn temple and the grand palace. then tuktuk back to the hotel.
Or on the weekend, get teh train to the chatachuck markets. Not a lot of quality items there, but still interesting to look around and some nice food stalls.

Don't beleive any drivers that say something is closed because of a holiday, or offering ultra cheep fares, they're just trying to get you to their friends "gem" shop where they get a kickback.

  • That is going a little too far to save what I assume will be only a marginal amount, just stay next to the airport or stay within airport.
