telstra nbn pending but working

my telstra nbn order is list as “in progress” waiting for me to plug in their modem.

service works fine using my own modem and i have no plans to use the modem they sent me.

it’s been over 2 weeks like this, will it keep working indefinitely?

One can wish lolz go Telstra, love it when they make mistakes 😄

  • Just gotta hope they don't bill you. Keep the modem they sent sealed so you can say it was never connected for a full refund if they try to sting you for modem cost.

    • +1

i told them i didn’t want it when i signed up, they said to just keep it

      • You will need it if you have a problem. Support will ask you something like "what lights are on / off on OUR modem / router". Support won't be able to help until you plug it in because they live on another planet or another country and they use scripts.

        • only signed up because it was $1 first month, i have no intention of staying with them.

          • @[Deactivated]: @chickenface: Are you committed to buying the modem then?
            You (digitally) signed a contract.
That $1 month of internet gets expensive very quickly of you agreed to buy a $200 modem as part of the deal

            • +1

@ESEMCE: the contract says just return the modem and i have a chat log saying i don’t even have to do that (because that was easier for them than not sending it at all)

            • @ESEMCE: You need to hand in your OzBargain license if you think anyone is going to pay $200 for that.

              • @[Deactivated]: I never said it was a deal, but it's what they typically charge.
On looking into the actual deal, it looks like you can just return the modem at the conclusion of the deal which is unusual for Telstra.

                • @ESEMCE: It's also possible to keep it under their 30 day satisfaction guarantee, or in the OP's case, chat seemed to think it wasn't worth the cost/effort of refurbishing it.

  • They will find you. You will be assimilated.

  • No it won’t

    Yep, same here chickenface.

I signed up for Telstra NBN on the Telstra Day two months at $1 per month offer and the order is still listed as in progress despite working perfectly for about two weeks now.

I contacted Telstra support through chat last week to let them know the connection has been provisioned and is working well, which the support person checked and agreed with, but the order status still hasn’t changed.

I figure I’ve done what is reasonable to notify Telstra, so if they want to keep providing me free NBN, it’s on them!

i got a call from some department asking if i needed an alternative voice service since they have some sort of service guarantee in that respect. they seemed confused themselves since they could see my service was active already

  • Good old, he left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.

  • You're not alone in this. I plugged in their modem to test the 4G, and downloaded much more than I was able to previously. I did not plug the modem into the NTD. Not sure what will happen with mine since it won't activate until next month, but if Telstra want to give me free 250/25 forever, I will accept.

The real test is not the two week mark, but the one month mark. Will you get a bill?

    • You're not alone in this. I plugged in their modem to test the 4G

OP didn't plug in the Telstra modem. You're on a different boat.

      • Yes, I know. I'm also not activated yet. I plugged it in without plugging it into the NTD. So it shouldn't be associated with my account.

You quoted two sentences. I didn't mean I was included in the same situation. Multiple other people have posted it in the original deal thread, as well as this forum post.

        • You're talking about your service activation is pending/not finalised, but you are getting internet from the 4G backup, right? Where as other people are talking about getting internet through their NTD, using another modem right?

I plugged it in without plugging it into the NTD.

          What does that even mean?

          • +1

@avoidfullprice: My service is pending because I wanted it activated next month. My current NBN internet is with Origin. I did plug in the 4G to test, but I only plugged in the power. I did not connect it to the NTD, network termination device, the NBN box on the wall.

Yes, multiple other people are talking about their Telstra internet being active, but the order is still saying pending. Of course none of them have been connected for an entire month yet, so it's unclear if it will be free.

  • They will start calling you.

  • could you pm me your order #, curious about this… i wont change the status of the order

    Hi mate,

Here’s your definitive answer to your question.

I’ve had multiple connections with Telstra over the years, at multiple locations. Gone through the whole process, with multiple calls to various departments, which each person not knowing the full process behind it, or sometimes not at all. Here was what worked for me.

Here’s basically what you need to do.

    1. You can continue using the service- you have already been connected their NBN service. However, if you don’t complete the order, you might not get your 50,000 points, or your cash back (depending on ShopBack)

    2. However, your order will continually show pending until you plug in their (or any old, even a Smart Modem down to Gen 1) Smart Modem. Why do they require this step? Beats me- it’s useful if you wish to have a 4G backup on your NBN. But I admit this step does make the switchover more convoluted that trying to switch to say, ABB or Superloop.

    3. Once you plug their Smart Modem in (and the Smart Modem to the NBN NTD box), it will take anywhere from 5 mins to an hour, for your order on your order tracker, to show your ‘Modem has been plugged in’. This will complete the second step of your order tracker.

    4. If after plugging in a Smart Modem, your order tracker still doesn’t show the second step as complete, and you get a message at the top saying that your modem is not communicating with the NBN network, then all you need to do is to use a SIM ejector tool to reset your modem in the reset hole, hold for 15 seconds, and your Smart Modem will restart, flashing 4 colours on succession (white, blue, orange, green- can’t remember in which order).

    5. If that still does progress your order, take out the 4G SIM card for 30 seconds, then put it back in.

    6. Your order should then progress to complete, and you’ll get an email from Telstra telling you so.

    7. If you’ve done both steps 4 & 5, and you don’t get the email within a day, or you just don’t want to wait anymore, call their NBN activations team (it’s the same 1800 number in the sms you have already received when you didn’t complete your order. Sorry I no longer have the SMS so can’t recall the number), let them know you have done this already, and they’ll manually push the order through for you. I have gotten the completion email within a few minutes of my call, and the order tracker with your order number will drop off your 24/7 app, and show that it has been completed.

FAQ- your Smart Modem is not geo-locked to a location or to an order number. You can take your Smart Modem from 5 years back, plug it in, reset, and use it to activate your NBN service. Even different locations in the same day. But when you call the 1800 number in Step 7, they’ll want to see your modem connected and talking to their systems.

I trust this helps. Enjoy! 😊

    • I received the text on frisay saying my service will be transferred on the 23rd (active from 16th), plugged in modem on Saturday, it's still pending today. Useless. I want it to be active so I can get the points and cancel

  • Hey OP, im on the same boat

Connected on 20th May perfectly using my old modem but order still says pending. They have sent me 2 emails telling me to plug the telstra modem in

I too wonder when does my free 2 month start? From the 20th or until the status change to complete?

    • Your 2 months already started the date of signing up, even if you choose to move the activation date to a later date.

      • No wai!!!!!

        • +1

There's no way they can start before the internet is active. It's also not free, we paid an entire dollar for it. If they did try to pull that kind of stunt, a simple TIO complaint would sort it out.

  • Similar but slightly different situation here.

I did plug in the modem but nothing happened, tried everything I could (plug/unplug/reset/4G etc) the transfer did not happen and I was still with the old ISP.

Called/chatted up Telstra a few times over a week, still nothing happened, until finally someone with a reasonably sized brain managed to bring my service over on the 11th day.

Now I still have a pending order despite the step 3 of 3 is shown as "connected" with no service to show nor 50,000 pts.

Telstra is such a mess, despite often to our advantages.

    • Same, was supposed to be connected on 16th May. Wasn’t as telstra said I had an active service they couldn’t cancel. Even after cancelling previous service, few tries, they tell me it will be active next few days. I am ok with it as Internet running on 4g atm

      • I think you need to keep calling until you get to someone who knows how to handle it. Since apparently the automated system doesn't work you are probably going to be stuck with that 4G backup forever without some manual intervention.
Of course if you find the 4G fine for your purpose, that might actually be a good thing for free. It is way to slow/unreliable at my location that I'd much prefer to pay for a more reliable service.

        • I get 25mbps speed which is good enough for me.

  • +2

Got called from the NBN activation team (I think) and they begged me to turn on the Smart Modem to complete the service activation. I said I don't have any intention to plug in the smart modem as my internet is working fine.

Weird they make their "modem" as requirement to connect to NBN. Makes you wonder if or what are they collecting from that box?

  • I have plugged in the modem just because my internet was stuck at 44mbps max download speed but should be 100mbps. Status has updated to modem plugged in even though I have unplugged it since I have no interest in using it.

Still awaiting confirmation of service is completed.

    • Just FYI, you can connect the modem into one of your router ethernet port. It doesn't have to be connected to NTD.

lodged a tio complaint. i’ve been assigned a complaint manager. still pending.

    got this pointless email today

We recently got in touch requesting you to provide us with additional information about your nbn order.

The information we requested will help us to connect you as soon as possible.

If you are having any issues installing your modem, please refer to your Quick Start Guide

    • Curious to see what comes from this. Keep us updated.

      • still pending.

        • Is your connection FTTC?

          • @macmine: fttp

  • finally activated today with 30 days before my second payment.

close to 3 months service for $1 when it should have been 1 month.

    • Great to hear that. So basically the payment won't start until it has been officially activated? Mine is still pending after a few contacts buy if that is the case I should probably stop bothering about it.

      • +1

i paid $1 initially on may 9 and the next scheduled payment is $140 on july 29.

i signed up for the 1 month for $1 deal, i missed the 2 month deal because i gave up after 8 hours or more talking to chat.

        • I paid the $1 on 5 May (under the 2 months $1 each deal) and haven't got any updates except the "service pending" in the app.
As long as they don't back-bill me for the pending period, I am more than happy for them to keep it pending for as long as they want.
How did your service finally got activated? Did you have to do anything?

          • @truetypezk: well i've lodged a tio complaint about the points so maybe that pushed it through?

        • My initial concern was that say they have only activated my service on 5 Aug, which is 3 months past the original order date, I might be charged $1+$1+$149 straightaway on the first bill. Your experience seems to suggest otherwise, which is definitely good news to me.

        • Seems completely insane that plugging your router in is a condition of activation for their service. I haven’t plugged mine in and haven’t been charged yet except for the $1 upon signup.
Not sure if it’s Telstra slowing me down or whether it’s a connection issue but every couple of days my speed crawls to 1Mbps until I restart my nbn modem (hfc). Then it’s back to full speed again.

          • @WaffleCrusader: Mine is even more ridiculous, I have plugged in the modem as soon as I have received it and made about 5 contacts by phone/online chat asking for it to be activated, yet it is still not activated after almost 2 months.

  • Over 2 months and still pending! Anyone else out there in similar situations? Lol

    • Me. As long as they’re not charging me, I’m happy to proceed with their ridiculous system.

      • Yep when they started to charge us we can then ask for that 50k Telstra+ pts.

    • Question: Did Telstra charge you a monthly fee when you were on pending status (not connected to a Telstra modem but using BYO modem)?

      • Nop but it eventually got connected after (quite) a few months, unfortunately:( Was hoping for lifetime pending status lol.

        • The activation date starts when the status changes to Connected (after a few months)?

          • @rrrrrrein: Yes. Free service before that.

            • @truetypezk: Sad, the service got connected officially. The emails stated "Please note, we've detected you're using your own modem. Voice services are not available using a non-compatible Telstra modem. The Customer Service Guarantee (CSG) Standard does not apply to your connection."

              • @rrrrrrein: How long did it take? Sound like a lot sooner that what we had before. They have probably figured out people are taking advantage of this loophole lol.
