Noise Cancelling Headphones for Flying - budget $400

Looking for some noise cancelling over ear headphones for hubby.

New job with a bit of flying required and with a birthday coming up thought the perfect time .

Currently has Bose (not sure what model) which are 6-7 years old so time for an upgrade . Was going
to go with Bose again but thought there may be better options that the community has found .

Thanks

    sony xm4s, i have a pair and they're great

    • Yeah i'd go for the Sony - unless husband is Bose fanboi

thanks , assuming its these ones ? Sony WH-1000XM4

        • +2

Yep, those are the right ones

        • There should be some cheap deals on it. Sony just released the XM5 recently.
Not sure if the XM5 is that much better, the biggest changes are the longer ear-cups are oval instead of circle, and that it doesn't fold, so they are a larger unit. The Bose QC 45 are also a pretty good product.

I'm not sure I'd get them with all the rust problems people talk about with the XM3s

      • 'Extended warranty'/product care etc should cover it especially if below $400.

You probably have the QC35's I'd say they're just fine to continue using IMO - there aren't that many newer ones available

    • QC35s were released in 2016 so they could either be those or QC25s.

Yeah I don't know if there are any objective reviews of noise cancelling effectiveness between generations, but I doubt there's a huge difference.

I have a 5 year old set of QC35s and only the earpads are showing wear - Bose gives you a case with them so there's no excuse to have them treated poorly! Replaced the earpad with $25 Amazon aftermarket ones and they're like new again.

      • I did the same with those Amazon earcups - as you say good as new.

I have the Bose QC35 … I don't have any other experience to compare it against, but frankly I can't fault them for the flying use case.

  • Love the beyerdynamic lagoon ANC

  • Just took first flight in over 2 years.
Had forgotten how good QC35's are on a plane.

  • i used the JBL Live 650 Wireless Bluetooth Noise Cancelling Over-Ear Headphones recently on a 14 hr flight from DXB to MEL. they have been out for a while but are good if you are on a budget.

  • Short or long haul, business/first class?

If sitting upright, either in-ear or over-the-ear is fine.

But when flying long haul and in business/first-class cabins, the bulk of over-the-ear headphones make rest/sleep difficult if you are a side-sleeper.

lol as if anyone on here would be flying business/first class

      • +1

I have a few times - not my money paying though!

Plus there'll be lots of points chasers on here that may be redeeming for BC/FC

        • exactly only way

      • Lots of people on here fly business class (not sure about first).

        • if they can afford to fly business class they wouldn't be on here trying to save a buck lol, buying crap they don't need and talking crap on the forum, as if

          • @[Deactivated]: Idk man plenty of high rollers in the forums here with Mercedes C-class AMG Sport Pack aspirations.

But for real, credit card signup point bonuses are a real way to get business class flights without spending big.

@toomuchdogfur: maybe I should of said paying for business/first class with you know money lol

              • @[Deactivated]: You're probably right that a lot of people who fly business on here do it with money, but I bet there are also a bunch of people with high frequent flyer status levels who need business class flights to maintain their level.

      • Just like many people come here to get a deal, you could do exactly the same with business/first class flights (using similar frequent flyer websites).

We have spent the bulk of the past 20 years (less covid time) flying exclusively business or first; paying cash, complimentary upgrades due to elite status or using points.

20 years ago, I would have had the same opinion you have today.

        • As if lol

  • Bose NCH700 !! upgraded from QC15 will last me another 10 years Bose makes some pretty bulletproof headphones

  • Any ideas for a budget version for my kids? Long haul flight coming up and want to get 2 pairs for under$100 each for teens. I love my QC's but can't splash for 2new pairs of those.
