How to Learn to Ride BMX at 30?

I just turned 30 and bought myself a BMX bike for the first time ever.
I have always loved BMX bikes, the way they look and how versatile they are.

Growing up I used to ride a regular mountain/road bike hybrid, but never had much experience riding a BMX.
How do people learn how to ride this style or learn how to do tricks or stunts as an adult?
I feel skate parks these days are more for teenagers and children.

Would love to hear peoples input.

Just do it. Ride a lot. Watch how to clips on your favourite video sharing platform. Start with little tricks work harder.

One thing I’ve learned though is that a older body doesn’t bounce so well, nor does it heal as quickly. You’d better get into it now or by th time you hit 40….

I bought a BMX for the kids to ride around the campsite over summer. Rode it a few times and did a few little jumps etc but couldn’t get into it as it’s too small to sit on to ride. Much rather have a full size MTB. It was good to have a simple bike to ride though.

Unless you got a good medical cover, don't do it.

What does BMX even stand for. Bicycle Machine Xtreme?

Bicycle Moto X (Cross) is the answer you’re looking for.

  • I want an electric BMX, handed to me by 1983 Nicole Kidman

    • Back when her face was less tight.

      • or at least naturally so

BMX and the early/mid 80's, what a time to be alive.

All you need was a bike and a shovel.

I started skateboarding at 30.. went ok for a couple of weeks but then fell off and realised why I should have learnt when I was a bit more flexible..

BMX in GTA is different to real life :D

I would message Nicole Kidman on instagram.
She would surely be willing to help in-between filming her next bomb.

  • I recently started doing mountain bike riding at 32, I had a few friends do it and now we've turned it into a regular hangout thing, we'll go camping the night prior somewhere and then hit up a mtb park or local trials.

Them being more experience then me was incredibly helpful, learning little things about weight distribution while going around berms and down/up jumps and which gear for climbs.
My biggest advice is try to find something similar, maybe a local club or a facebook riding group? Ride with better people and you'll become better and learn.

I try to watch some MTB youtube videos but find I'm more of a practical learner. I have considered getting a riding coach but there are none in my local area, but that could be an option as well.

Try to ride as much as you can and enjoy it.

  • When you say BMX are you looking at it for dirt jumping, racing or for skate parks?

    • ^^ I would suggest dirt jumping as an adult. It's more socially acceptable which you seem to care about and you can join a racing club to get advice and have fun progressing in your ability.

Yeah I would even consider having multiple bikes. Get a mountain bike to get out more, go further and build up endurance. I’d play around with the bmx on the side. I got back on my mongoose I had in my teens, wow it was hard on the legs considering I can do 100km on a road bike.

Man as adult, stacks hurt 10X more, gravity is 3x stronger and actually suffer consequences vs when you were a kid.

Pad up, lot of tricks I leaned when I was kid applies to XC MTB, rock hopping, trials etc…
