What Capacity / Brand Front Load Washing Machine to Buy?

I’m in the market for a new front load washing machine to replace the old LG 5kg top loader which has served us well up till now.

We’ve just expanded from 2 adults + 1 child to 2 + 3 so want something to handle extra capacity in the future.

Really unsure of which capacity is suitable, somewhere between 8-12kg I guess. I’m unsure of brands, models, and features to consider.

Ability to wash double or king single doona, or an entire queen sheet set would be great. Also a small load and quick wash option would be useful.

There is versatile space for a larger machine.

I’m looking for a machine that people have had lasting durability from, 10 years plus, relatively quiet, great wash performance and great energy/water usage. Exceptional value is a must. Happy to wait for a great deal on the right appliance.

  • Will you also need a bigger dryer to dry a full load?

    • Hopefully not. We have a room where evap and airflow is suitable for drying.

  • On another note - Front loaders are better than Top loaders these days? Most of the websites I've had a look at, now show about 70% as Front loaders. Asking as my 10yr old washer is giving in soon.

    • It's gentler on clothes, and is easily accessed by the vertically challenged.

    • Not worth it, I see hundreds of posts where people find mould in their seal even though they leave the door open etc, 0 for top loaders

      • That's what I was thinking - gravity… lol

german made bosch receives well , beware of lower tier bosch from china

note 8kg front load is something like 6kg capacity of top load

top load easily fits more but front load use little water

    • second German Bosch, minimum i would be going for is 10kg. I have a 9kg with 2adults, 2 kids, and feels like the machine is on 24x7!!

      • I've read somewhere a long time ago that there are diminishing returns getting the bigger units, as they have the same motors as the smaller units - you're just paying for a bigger bowl so you're not necessarily getting the same performance with a bigger load

Most washing machine last for 10+ years, mine almost going for 12+ years.

  • I definitely recommend Bosch, I've had mine for about 15 years. It's pretty quiet and the water rating is pretty good. I recommend getting as big as you can fit in your laundry. My family made the mistake of getting a smaller washing machine, but as our family grew we had to do way too many loads of washing.

  • "I’m looking for a machine that people have had lasting durability from, 10 years plus"
problem is you can't buy a 10 year old model
but as per others have stated, German built Bosch are typically reliable (ours is approaching 16 years)
    .

    • I got mine used 10-ish years years ago, turns out the model was almost 10 years old at that stage.

      Pretty chuffed frankly.

  • I'm in the same boat as OP.
My 14 year old LG front loader is making a loud sound when spin drying and I suspect the bearings are gone. From what I understand it's not worth repairing.
I see that German made Bosch has been recommended.
    Any deals?

We are a family of 4, 3 adults and a teenager. We have a 7.5kg Samsung front loader, had it for 8 years so far and we absolutely love it.

    • Do not buy Samsung…..

    • My Samsung failed just out of warranty. Lucky enough to have them still fix it.

      • Ours still going great after 7 years.

LG front loader with direct drive is good, silent and value for money.
German is also good but then you need to pay a premium of about 50 to 80% more than LG.
The choice is yours, you want to get 12 years from LG or 15 years for German.

If the machine has run for more than 10 years it's time to replace rather than repair because spare parts will not be available and the new machine will cost cheaper than the repairs.

  • We bought this Bosch 10 years ago.

Still going but have had to replace the front door latch, inlet valve and motor brushes.

  • Replaced a 15year old 7kg Front loader Electrolux with a LG 10kg washer recently. Great machine - quite, fast, clothes seem to come out clean and dry with the 1400rpm spin cycle. Has wifi, never used it. Drum doesn't seem much bigger than the Electrolux, as it isn't as keep, but it is a bit larger volume wise.

    • How much did you pay for it?

  • Thanks all for the responses. It seems that LG or German Bosch around 10kg is the way to go.

Now to find a great deal.

If you go to BL or GG they will try to push high end german model with all stories and try to upsell you for 2K budget and If you tell them u r looking out for LG, they will just walk out and say this is the machine.

I think they are not getting more commission on selling LG so they will dampen your decision, so please don't sway by their sales talk and stories.
