  • Not a bad price but there are heaps of cheap ones second hand now with the release of the Mini 3.

    • My only counterpoint to this would be if you want to buy that DJI insurance. That said, this is a bit more than half the price of getting the combo with the mini 3 pro.

      • The insurance sounds worth it if it's your first drone.

  • +1

It was only yesterday I was out camping watching someone use of of these and be extremely impressed. Though having just had a look at the no-fly zone maps, my interest may have waned as it looks like I'd need to go pretty remote to even be able to take off.

    • +1

You should have a look at this.

      https://www.casa.gov.au/knowyourdrone/drone-rules

This drone weighs 249g I believe, so you aren't included in the 5.5km exclusion zone from aerodromes. You still cant fly over 400 ft AGL though.

      • Wait so you can even fly in the red spot or just the orange?

        • +1

Red within reason. Dont fly into the airport with your <250g drone.

    • According to AirMap you can fly in heaps of Melbourne with this one as it weighs under 250g.

And as @ATangk mentioned, you need to familiarise yourself with the government's rules.

      • Yeah that's what I was looking at before making this post. I was aware of different rules for the < 250g but didn't realise it was so considerably less restricted.

The footage recorded and ability to cope with the wind was truly impressive on this unit, this info is making it a whole lot more appealing.

  • I would assume I can use my Mavic Air 2S controller with either the mini 2 or 3, correct?

I might just get a mini by itself, and perhaps another battery, so I can use a drone within 5.5kms of an aerodome.

Currently working as a real-estate photographer, and there's a lot of customers whose house location would not allow me to fly a "larger" drone… 😞

    • If you have the DJI RC-N1, its the same remote as the mini 2.

  • Worth spending the extra money for the Mini 3?

    • +1

It depends on what your budget is.
The Mini3 has some great upgrades (longer battery life, Terrain Avoidance sensors and bigger/better camera for stills & Video..

I have the mini 2 but even I am thinking of upgrading to the 3

    • +3

I've looked at the 3 (and coming from a 2) and I cant justify twice the price by the time you put the controller (which is actually a cheap upgrade) and fly more kit in.
Sensors I dont care for, same for vertical shooting.
Similar speed/flight time (short of spending even more on the better batteries).
Range is an interesting one as technically you cant go further than visual line of sight, but I've never had an issue with the 2 and the standard controller range.

So it comes back to camera/image quality. Yes, its going to be better than the 2, but for mucking around I think the 2 is fine. If you're a pro, then you'd be looking at the 3, air 2s or 2 pro and price becomes less of a contributing factor.

      • I've never had a drone but from what I read, I'm going to accidentally lose or damage one at some point, I'd rather lose a mini 2 than a mini 3, even with the insurance.

This equation would be a lot easier to answer if they'd just drop the RRP of the Mini 2 $50 US already.

  • My prediction of $699 within 3 weeks of the Mini 3 launch appears to be incorrect so far.

Waiting for a JB Deal, have some discount GCs with them.

  • Wait, can I get JB to price match this somehow?

"But JB hifi, still 949, remember to price beat." ?

    • Why not price beat at officeworks instead? JB generally only price match in my experience.
      https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/dji-mavic-…

      • I've got TCN Home cards to convert to JB Hifi Gift cards, saving me 15% on $450 worth and 10% on another $500 worth.

        • +1

Gee you've held onto those for like half a year right?

          • @ATangk: Yep! Still got 2.5 years before they go off.

I recall when Mini 2 launched, Mini 1 price was stupid cheap @ JB Hifi. That's what I've been waiting for. (hasn't hapenned)

            • @hamwhisperer: I just use mine to buy iPad pros (after PM education pricing) and iPhones.

              • @ATangk: I'm happy with my iPad - used education discount with Apple also and bought it direct from them. I can't see me buying my 83" OLED for 4 years still so best I get the drone from them, maybe a PS5 Pro in the next 36 months.

      • never got either to PB. always "can't PB under our cost"

  • should be plenty of secondhand options as people upgrade to mini 3, as the upgrades are significant. even if the price is much more painful

    • People are trying to ask for $650 to $900 for used ones, they're dreaming. A new one was $780 a few weeks ago (all prices with the FMC kit)

      • In my experience, Gumtree pricing doesn't really reflect the current lowest prices around. Often the people both looking to buy and sell on there are only checking RRP.

      • +2

If the Mini 3 was priced @ Mini 2 prices, you'd be correct, but as its being sold at a higher tiered price, the Mini 2 retains a higher resale value.

        • True true, but I mean $780 for a Mini 2 FMC new - matter of weeks ago, $800 in this deal.

If you're selling used, you need to drop instant 15% off

          • @hamwhisperer: Yes but the $800 pricepoint is only a temporary price, not the new standard price. FYI Mavic 3 standard and Air2S FMC are also on sale 15% off.

  • +1

Discontinue the mini SE and make this the SE price and I'm here for it

    • +2

Curious to see if they'll make an SE version of the Mini 2

  • I just bought this drone (my first) and loving it so far! Worth it at nearly half the price of the 3 pro IMO.

You could get 5% off with officeworks.

    • Which SD card did you get?

      • +1

I have so far used a Sandisk Ultra 128GB micro SD, which seems to be going good.

        • I actually thought that was under spec? Don't you need extreme?

          • @hamwhisperer: Not sure tbh, I never checked. I have an extreme version that was in my action camera but might swap them. Only issue I've had is a cpu overload but that seems to be related to my phone, and there's several ways to improve that which I'll try. If an extreme is the suggestion, probably a safer bet of course.
