    Thanks op

  • +6

Are they still worth $99 ?

  • +4

Anyone looking at buying these should really consider whether they need Gortex footwear as the cons are numerous. I would bet that 99% of people on here would be much better off with a trail runner or hiking shoe (non Gortex)

    • +1

      What is the difference

      • +13

Gortex is good for casual hikes, morning dew, puddles, light snow etc but once wet it takes ages to dry. Also once holed it leaks and is like having water in a bag.

Non gortex dries much faster and breathes better. So if your doing river crossings or other things where you get wet feet non gortex is the way to go.

        • What does holed mean like with holes?

        • +1

I don't think its that simple.

Yes Goretex shoes take ages to dry, but most shoes take longer then acceptable to dry and at least Goretex will protect against any water below the height of your shoe.

I would also say that regular shoes can degrade and start to smell etc, especially if its a long day or you are camping and don't have an easy way to dry them properly.

If you are doing river crossings you either need made for water shoes or quick drying shoes in my opinion.

        • +1

There are some shoes that are not Goretex but is tagged as 'waterproof'. Will those work for puddles?

          • @Hamlet: They should, they would just use a different waterproof membrane.

      • goretex is much warmer - good when it's cold (like snow cold), hot when it's warm.

If water gets in from the top - consider heavy rain, water running down your legs and trousers, filling up your boots; goretex will hold the water in.

        Goretex is awesome for raincoats

    • +14

I have goretex and I'd never go back. I see mud or ankle-height water puddle in the way.. and I'd just step on it and move on. Without the gortex, I'd think twice of doing that as I don't want to walk for another 5 hours with a wet sock and have to worry about drying it around the tent (and pray that it doesn't rain). This means I gotta look around, hoping there is a way around that puddle.. which in some trail, is not an option.

However, I do hike into the mountains and the coasts. If all you do is just using it as every-day wear, or just having a run around the park with gravels then I wouldn't spend the money on goretex. Goretex products are expensive and if you won't use it then its a waste.

      • +2

The problem is, how do you know if the puddle is ankle-height?

        • -1

Some boots go up to your shin. So bring spare boots then change into them.

        • +1

You’ll have to wait till Luftkin tapes come on special…😉

      • +1

I agree with this, although I like to wear my Goretex shoes when it's raining of after it rains even around the city. Makes walking through puddles easy and you know your feet are going to stay dry. I particularly like Goretex shoes when walking through wet grass. I made the big mistake of wearing canvas shoes through wet grass many years ago, and I still remember having soaked feet for the whole day.

This style of shoes may not suit the more casual/urban walking that I use my Goretex shoes for though.

        • ^ I have a pair of Adidas Terrex (Climaproof rather than Goretex) for this exact purpose - they are my winter / rainy weather urban travel boots! Found them dirt cheap randomly in a massive outlet store in the USA - was hella stoked, one of my best purchases! :)

          https://www.picclickimg.com/d/l400/pict/273606274902_/Adidas…

With regular laces on, they are pretty much a normal sneaker - so I feel like less of a goose / tourist traipsing around a city in a pair! :)

      • Assuming these boots are well made, $99 is cheap regardless of what they are made of.
        …Are they well made? :)

    • +5

To each their own, I have goretex shoes and see no downside to them but it has spared me from walking in squishy shoes after stepping in muddy terrain and small puddles.

    • +2

Not sure where the 99% figure comes from, but in muddy conditions (think most places in NSW right now) Goretex is the difference between a comfortable hike and skipping around puddles, sliding down the side of mud, and potentially injuring backs and ankles. You can confidently stride in the middle of a mud patch. It makes the hike tolerable and much quicker.

    • Agreed. I've had some similar styled boots in Gore-Tex and non Gore-Tex. The Gore-Tex adds an additional layer in the shoe and makes it stiffer across the toes where it flexes. I've always found the Non Gore-Tex a more comfortable shoe as it isn't as resistive to my foots movements. There are days in Australia where there is 0% chance my feet so it's good to have both choices (Shoes were Merrell Moab 2 Mid).

      • +1

Are you sure you aren't just comparing two different shoes?

I have two literally identical shoes, one with a waterproof membrane and one without, besides a slight change in breathability they feel identical.

        • Nope they look identical except for one slightly different detail on the webbing. It's the reason I bought them as I really liked the original one I had. The original is the Merrell MOAB 2 Ventilator Mid and the Gore-Tex version isn't called Ventilator, it's called GTX (I think). I have them in front of me but can't see the name anywhere on the shoe. It is easy to feel the difference with your hands over the top of the shoe which is where I notice the difference the most. I guess it might differ between brands.

          • @scratchy: I was talking about how it feels while wearing the shoe.

            • @samfisher5986: @samfisher5986 yes I notice the difference on my feet. As I got the Gore-Tex version after couple of years after the original pair I thought that they were new and just being broken in. I still wear both pair had both pairs for a couple of years, both have been extensively broken in and the Gore-Tex version is noticeably stiffer over the toes and less comfortable.

    • Goretex vs Treated/proofed leather?

    • +4

To be honest, I would bet 90% of the people buying these are not actually using them for anything more than tourist trails and urban walking. ie. They are unlikely to be crossing rivers, and more likely just looking for footwear that will keep dry in the rain, or really shallow puddles and mud - for which goretex would be quite suitable.

Might not be 90%, but I bet it's a higher % than you think it is! :)

  • Op thanks! Picked a pair <3

  • +11

code WELCOME10 takes $10 off the price

    • +3

saw this about 3 minutes too late :(

      • +7

Pro tip: always try a few generic codes when placing an order. E.g. 10OFF, FREEESHIPPING, FACEBOOK, SAVE10

      • -2

Buy again, then cancel first order or just return it once you receive it.

      • Yeah but if you only got the shoes you would have had to pay for postage with the extra 10% off. Assuming you are getting them delivered.

        • +2

Actually no, I bought the shoes for $89 after voucher, and it was still free postage.

Whether I get them delivered is another question, but mostly due to the "low stock" in the size I ordered.

  • +2
    • +3

You like saying Goretex don’t you?

  • Oos

  • Thx op.. bought one with $10 code 😁

  • +2

Be sure to check for bonus security tags.

  • Dang! I bought hi-tec from the previous deal. This is much better.

    • +1

Yeah i bought the hi-tec too - Not really impressed with them. They are pretty uncomfortable. But hopefully they will do the job.

      • I found them to be comfortable. This is my first hiking shoes though. I mainly bought them for camping. Doubt I’ll be doing any serious hiking.

  • Does anyone have these boots and know how they compare for hiking?

  • +1

$89 is a steal, especially for gtx, thanks op

  • $89 delivered seems great, grabbed a pair, hopefully sizing is good, thanks

  • How do these shoes compare?

    • Looks good but its $10.99 more :D

    • This one is mid hiking boots. It has more protection for your feet. your one is a lower shoe. not much protection but more lighter and comfortable.

    • I have these shoes and love them. I think I paid about 130 so that seems like a steal.

  • Thanks! Salomon make great shoes. Time to replace my previous pair which are 10 years old and pretty worn out.

  • Is sizing in US or UK? edit: sizing guide says US, so will see what we get

    • As far as I can tell they run slightly small. I'm between a US 9 and 10 and I went with a 10. I'll report back if they arrive before the sale ends.

      • +1

Well the 10 is on the verge of being too small. Might even suggest going up a size and a half from your normal size. I can confirm the sizing is US.

        • +1

Got mine also, they seem tight. Got the US10 (stated UK9.5) and I'm a US10 (UK9) in most of my shoes and boots and have borderline skinny feet. I'm going to take a chance and hope they loosen up as they don't have any for exchange now

          • +1

@RedSky1: same. slightly narrow. hope it'll loosen up

          • +1

@RedSky1: I feel like they should loosen up width-wise. My issue is them being slightly too short, probably less hope for that! I'll probably keep them anyway though.

  • Mid or Low, can't decide, any thoughts? I know this deal is for Mid level but just want to get some opinions.

    • My opinion is if you do a long hike. wear a mid-boot. if for a short or casual hike. wear a low one.

    • low

    • My girlfriend wears her goretex trail running shoes for everything, even multiday hikes, and prefers that to mids. I'm happy with trail running shoes for most things, but on multi-day hikes I prefer to wear mids as I'm usually carrying a bit of weight and they feel more stable/up to the task. I don't see the point of low boots.

      • What does she have? Would you recommend some trail running shoes?
        TIA

        • Hers are Adidas as are mine. I'm not sure what model. We bought them on clearance from Anaconda back in 2016 (maybe $50) for a half marathon trail run we did but after that only used them for hikes. Hers are still in great shape but mine have fallen apart. I think for most people waterproof trail runners are the way to go, but I suggest going into a shop like Anaconda and trying several on to see what you like.

  • +1

I have the current Salomon Ultras - mid GTX. So good standing in a puddle and no water gets in. I bought them because they don't look too bad as a casual shoe walking to and from work on a wet Sydney day but for bush walks.

  • +1

How do they compare to the Lyngens that were on sale for $99?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/699840
I got them last time and they were pretty good for me, so looking for the same or similar for friends.

  • +2

    My Order was cancelled

    • mine too

    • Ah damn! They probably ran out of stock before your order was allocated to a store / picked by the store (from the floor). (Eg. My order was fulfilled by the Geelong store)

      Unlucky!

  • +2

Are these special styled made for Anaconda? As i couldn't find this style anywhere else, even salomon official website.

    • +3

My guess (pure speculation) is that these are "made for outlet" style models, produced by Salomon in bulk / more cheaply (using cheaper materials, construction, and/or QC) to sell in discounted / outlet stores like Anaconda. You will find the same models on random international websites (as well as other similarly named models that are not sold directly through Salomon).

Likely they are not made to the same high standard as the core Salomon lines, so I wouldn't expect them to be as durable or last as long. But hopefully they should still be pretty reasonable in quality, to not adversely impact the brand's reputation for quality.

Basically, my guess is they are a simpler and cheaper version of the X Ultra 4 MID GTX or Outline MID GTX shoe, produced in bulk to sell in volume through discount stores.

The more discerning hikers would stick to the higher priced core models (like X Ultra 4 MID GTX), which are the ones with the rave reviews. That brand halo trickles down to these outlet models that are sold more cheaply, and probably/possibly in higher volumes.

And when the non-enthusiast asks their friend who is a keen hiker / backpacker what shoes they wear, and they say Salomons, the non-enthusiast will google Salomon and come across these bargain models, and buy these instead of the core models the enthusiast is wearing. And that's probably OK, given their respective needs.

Anyway, that is just my guess - as I said, pure speculation (based on how I know other brands in other similar industries operate!). :)

FWIW, I still bought pair for my wife, and previously bought a pair of a different model for my dad (who loves them), so I'm not saying they are crap - I'm just not expecting them to be $260-$300 shoes! :)

  • Anyone's order still in processing? What the heck is taking so long?

    • Same, my order is still processing. I've had regular orders take 2 days, but this is a fair bit longer

      • Wtf, I just got refunded in paypal. No email or contact whatsoever

        • That sucks man. This will be my second attempt at buying shoes from a sale from Anaconda that were showing in stock. I'll be sending them a complaint if mine gets cancelled as well. How can you have a sale that shows in stock and then just cancel orders. What kind of shitty stock taking is that?

    • Just got an email saying they've been shipped.

Now hopefully they won't be 2 left shoes with security tags like last time 🤞

  • +2

Received mine today, ordered US10 (UK9.5) which is 0.5 larger than my usual size but still find it 0.5 smaller. Should have gone to US10.5 but too late now that's all OOS. Will have to return and hope for next deal.

    • I just got mine and like you I normally wear US9.5 and went to US10, but have found them long enough but quite narrow, especially with thick socks

      • I also find the top of the boot quite tight even after loosening the laces and it rubs against top of ankle. Gonna try a bit more at home before knowing whether I should return them or not

        • Same for me! It rubs against top of ankle, and is not comfortable at all! Will return it.
          I'm considering getting: https://www.anacondastores.com/footwear/mens-footwear/mens-m… or https://www.anacondastores.com/footwear/mens-footwear/mens-m…

          • +1

@Chrisssss: I've been wearing mine for a week and they have softened up considerably and have lost that uncomfortable narrow feeling. There is still some rubbing feeling on the ankle, but that has also reduced and is not a problem for me, but maybe an issue on a proper hike.
It's been really cold and wet here and a couple of times they have been out in soaking rain with lots of puddles and I haven't had the slightest bit of water get in and the shoes aren't even that wet when I take them off.
They grip really well, are comfortable, light, warm, waterproof and the sizing seems really good now that they are worn in and don't feel narrow and tight.
I certainly won't be returning mine and am very happy for the $89 delivered that I paid.

          • @Chrisssss: The boots in the first link look remarkably similar in design to the boots in this deal with only slightly different aesthetics - I'm guessing they are very similar in construction and won't be significantly different in feel and performance.
The boots in the second link you provided are actually on the Salomon site, so look to be a newer model and possibly may be a better option…

            • @choofa: Same experience, they have loosened up (lenthways too) but I would probably not be hiking in them. I have a very narrow foot so the width is good but the ankle rubs. I don't agree with the sentiments of 'its only $99 and they are fine for that price etc' the reason I bought was I was expecting a better shoe so I am disappointed overall. The laces, when done up normally, start to slip up over the tongue which is a big problem, I will need to devise a way to tie them that does not. All of these reasons are why they went on sale.

  • Be nice if Anaconda actually sold wide fitting shoes so those of us with flipper feet could shop there.

Fortunately I can just import directly from the US and avoid supporting local retailers who refuse to stock wide fitting shoes..

  • Just received cancellation and refund notice

  • +1

Got mine Thursday. They seem a bit light-duty. Other hiking boots I've owned have integrated the goretex into the walls of the boot. These almost seem like a goretex sock wrapped in breathable mesh, so I suspect the comment above about it being a special run for outlet stores is bang on.

I really just wanted something cheap and cheerful to wear out for a morning now and again though, I think they'll be fine for that. Just not for a multi-day hike across Tasmania.
