“One of the best series in the history of fantasy.”—Los Angeles Times

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse—unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season.

Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen’s brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister—the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms.

Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki—whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys.

Not worth the leather it's in.

    • These are the books not the tv show

      • +2

I understand. TV shows are not worth a plastic box.

first 4 seasons were pretty good, just season 5 and onwards that started declining in quality, or dropping off a cliff in the case of season 8.

i say this as someone who is a book snob and chose to not watch the series originally, i only started watching season 1 when season 3 or 4 was still premiering

            • @Musiclover: there's always going to be a shakespeare and a game of thrones. there was a time when shakespeare was in vogue and something older was being passed over.

wars are just in our nature, we are a violent species. it might seem bad now, but in 50 years it will probably be being taught to a bunch of bored school children who could not care less, if it is remembered at all outside of dusty books and historians.

@[Deactivated]: Yes, I heard that opinion before, that classical music and literature is just pop music and pop literature of the past. This is very far from the truth. It seems logical only because there are some stylistic similarities between creations of art of the same epoch regardless of their value. Pop art of the past is long forgotten.

As to the war, not only most people and civilization in general will not survive a WWIII, it is very likely that even the Earth itself won’t be able to. Besides, why do you think that you would be able to stand aside? Me and you and most others would likely become a cannon fodder unless you are 70 or above.

@Musiclover: Here you go, Shakespeare's works in leather binding. (Been available in leather for years. https://shop.shakespearesglobe.com/products/the-complete-wor…

  • Wonder how hard these would be to hollow out for storage

I love how there's no facilities to expand the holder. People have just accepted this is is.

hardly a box set if the series is unfinished…

    • +2

Agreed. This makes no sense. Also why are they marketing it as Game of Thrones when the series is called something else?

  • These books are full of better stories than Bran's. Should we tell someone?

  • +2

I came in here to say why would you buy a set without the final book, but it seems accepted it that it's not happening
